As a university professor, I have been immersed in theory and guess for so long that it recently struck me: I don't know how to do anything. By “do”, I mean something material, something done with my hands that produce an actual product.
The trades come to mind. Whenever I call an electrician, or a mason, or a carpenter, I look on in wonder as they smoothly employ their skills. For example, I recently had a kitchen sink repaired by a young man. He kept singing as he worked at the pipes. Minutes later, he turned on the water and it flowed forth with nothing similar to a leak. Is this not a minor miracle
All of this brought me to a decision: I registered for an adult evening course at a local technical school. The title: Basic Electricity and Wiring (线路). When we began, I felt immediately overwhelmed. So many new terms. In an instant, I was a student again in all respects: the anxiety, the self doubt, the wondering if I had made a mistake. And then I recalled: “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence…Education will not; the world is full of educated failures.” So I worked my way through my basic wiring course. My initial impulse to jump ship gradually gave way to the awareness that I was, indeed, acquiring a useful new skill.
What followed ahead was the course's climax: Each student was presented with a switch and a lighting fixture The task was to install them in a door frame and wire them; but not throw the switch until the instructor was present. There I was, an experienced professor, standing like a fresh faced schoolboy. I worked away, using my tools to connect wires. When I was done, I raised my hand. The instructor looked over my job and glanced at me. “Hit the switch,” he said.
It's hard to characterize that moment. But I did feel that learning is not something that ends early in life. I need to widen my horizon through constant learning. The broader the horizon, the more opportunities there are to learn something new.
1. Why did the author register for an adult evening course
A. Because he met several problems in the daily life.
B. Because he wanted to learn the secret of the miracle.
C. Because he needed to strengthen his theoretical knowledge.
D. Because he desired to make actual products with his own hands.
2. What was the author's first thought when he began his course
A. Dropping out of the evening course.
B. Ignoring so many new terms.
C. Setting a goal and never giving up.
D. Impressing others with his new skills.
3. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Responsible and sharp eyed.
B. Determined and self motivated.
C. Creative and well informed.
D. Considerate and widely interested.
4. What does the story intend to tell us
A. There is no end to learning.
B. One good turn deserves another.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. A fall in a pit, a gain in your wit.
根据第一段“As a university professor, I have been immersed in theory…with my hands that produce an actual product.
根据第三段中的“When we began, I felt immediately overwhelmed. So many new terms. In an instant, I was a student again in all respects: the anxiety, the self doubt, the wondering if I had made a mistake. 以及“My initial impulse to jump ship gradually gave way to the awareness that I was, indeed, acquiring a useful new skill. 故选A。
根据第三段中的“And then I recalled: ‘Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence…Education will not; the world is full of educated failures.’(然后我想到:‘世界上没有什么能取代坚持…… 以及“My initial impulse to jump ship gradually gave way to the awareness that I was, indeed, acquiring a useful new skill.
根据最后一段“It's hard to characterize that moment…the more opportunities there are to learn something new. 故选A。

How to Make a Difference in Your Career
Making a meaningful career choice is a crucial decision in life. __1__, such as being a doctor, teacher or charity worker. However, you don't have to limit yourself to just those choices. To have a lasting and meaningful impact, it's important to consider the problem you expect to overcome.
Define what's personally satisfying
__2__. To ensure success, remember that your career is a marathon and not a short running. Most people reach peak productivity between the ages of 40 and 60, so it's important to choose something that you can stick with for the long term. When looking for meaningful work, consider what is satisfied with you.
Define your career impact
To maximize your career impact, consider the importance of the problem you are addressing, how effective your job is at dealing with it, and your personal fit. Your personal fit depends on your abilities and career capital—skills, connections, and reputation. __3__, and you can ensure that you have a long term improvement in the lives of others.
__4__
Before thinking about specific career paths, it's valuable to consider what kinds of careers tend to have the highest impact. Remember many career categories can enable you to make a big contribution to whichever global problems you think are most pressing.
Have a plan A and a plan B
List promising alternatives you can switch to if your plan A doesn't work out. If you're ambitious enough, your plan A probably has a good chance of not working out. __5__. To avoid unacceptable risks, write a plan B—how you'll get back on your feet if things go wrong.
A. So you should be ready to try again
B. Take all these factors into consideration
C. Explore the key categories of meaningful careers
D. Have a better understanding of the career categories
E. Finding work that is personally satisfying can be a challenge
F. People who show their interest in challenges get satisfying careers
G. There are many paths that you can take to contribute positively to the world
上文“Making a meaningful career choice is a crucial decision in life.(做出一个有意义的职业选择是人生中至关重要的决定。)” 下文“such as being a doctor, teacher or charity worker(比如成为一名医生、教师或慈善工作者)”说明的是选择哪些职业。
根据段落小标题“Define what's personally satisfying(定义什么是个人满足)”和下文“ To ensure success, remember that your career is a marathon and not a short running.(为了确保成功,请记住你的职业生涯是一场马拉松,而不是短跑。)”
上文“Your personal fit depends on your abilities and career capital—skills, connections, and reputation.(你的个人适合度取决于你的能力和职业资本——技能、人脉和声誉。)”
下文“Before thinking about specific career paths, it's valuable to consider what kinds of careers tend to have the highest impact.(在考虑具体的职业道路之前,考虑一下什么样的职业往往会最有影响力是很有价值的。)”
上文“If you're ambitious enough, your plan A probably has a good chance of not working out.(如果你雄心勃勃,你的A计划很可能不会成功。)”说明的是“如果野心太大,A计划就不会成功”;下文“To avoid unacceptable risks, write a plan B—how you'll get back on your feet if things go wrong.(为了避免不可接受的风险,写一份B计划——如果出现问题,你将如何重新站起来。)” 故选A。

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn't interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine or business. I couldn't decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement (实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month's placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. __________________________

The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. ______________________________________

One possible version:
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. He hit the road face down and rolled over. He lay still in the middle of the road as the bus sped away. None of the cars behind stopped. Thinking that he could die, I stopped my car and carefully examined the boy. With the help of some passers by, I lifted the unconscious boy into the car and raced back to the hospital. After his family were contacted, and he was wheeled into the emergency surgery, I drove home, exhausted but happy.
The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. What a feeling it was to help save the life of another person! I spent the rest of the day in a state of the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. Driving home that evening, I decided on my career path. Two months of placements could not do what 30 minutes' helping an accident victim had done for me. This experience taught me that at times, the decisions are made for you—and that whatever happens is always for the best.
