Hoh Xil National Natural Reserve in Qinghai Province is home to more than 200 species of wild animals. Recently, however, a wolf has stolen the show.
In July, 2023, a woman came across a very thin wolf while driving through Hoh Xil.
The wolf looked hungry at the time. Out of kindness, the woman offered it some beef. She later posted a video of her experience online. The video attracted many tourists to the area to feed the hungry wolf. Three months later, the wolf again caught public attention with noticeable changes in its size. In a recent video, the wolf can be seen as much larger and fatter. More surprisingly, it has learned to beg (乞讨) for food from tourists!
Feeding wild animals isn’t an unusual practice among tourists in the area. Last October, a video showed that tourists fed several wild brown bears at a scenic spot. It’s said that these bears often go close to the village for food.
However, experts warn that such behavior can have bad effects on these animals, as they may become increasingly dependent on humans.
“The reserve has a complex food chain. Unless an animal is endangered, it’s better to stay away from it,” said Dai Qiang, an animal researcher. “And wild animals may carry bacteria. Getting too close to them can be danger ous.”

World Environment Day is coming. Everyone can do something to make a difference to the world. Around me, I see both beauty and problems. We have lovely green trees and a small river nearby, which bring us fresh air and peace. But sadly, I also see plastic bags, bottles, and other litter lying on the ground or floating in the water.

I try to do my part to protect our environment. I always pick up trash when I see it and throw it into the right bin. I also save electricity by turning off lights when leaving a room.
To make things better, I have two suggestions. Firstly, we should plant more trees. Trees clean the air we breathe and provide homes for birds.

五、[河北中考] 阅读理解
Have you ever visited Xiong’an Business Service Center Do you know anything special about it On top of the center’s six buildings, there are about 28,400 solar panels (太阳能板). They match perfectly with the traditional Chinese design of the buildings. If they were put together, the solar panels would cover an area of 1.4 standard football fields. These panels now can produce 5% of the electricity that is needed for the center.
Using local clean energy plays an important role in Xiong’an New Area’s progress. Solar panels which cover some buildings are used to provide electricity in the area. In the future, the solar panel project will produce more electricity. The electricity will first be used by companies in the area, and the rest will be shared.
The solar panel project is good for the environment and economy (经济). It not only helps to reduce greenhouse gases (温室气体), but also lowers electricity costs for companies in the area. The project is expected to produce nearly 3.5 million kWh of electricity. This means that about 3,000 tons of greenhouse gases will be avoided every year.
There are already a number of projects in the area. These projects use solar power and other clean energy. Two new projects will be started: an energy-saving lighting project and a green heating project. The purpose of the two new projects is to further cut pollution. Xiong’an New Area is on the way to becoming a green modern city.

外刊阅读—学会地道英语 鲨鱼湾的生态系统堪忧
There is a place named Shark Bay (鲨鱼湾) in the Western Australia. At least 28 kinds of sharks are swimming through the clear water there—the largest in the world. Especially tiger sharks are common visitors to Shark Bay. They move their 15-foot-long (about 4.5 meters) bodies through the seagrass, sometimes catching huge sea cows for a meal.
Although tiger sharks are dangerous to them, they are important to the health of the ocean ecosystem. In fact, they can also be our powerful friends in stopping climate change.
It all comes back to the seagrass that moves with the waves in Shark Bay. The seagrass is food for the sea cows. Each eats about 40 kilograms of seagrass a day. By controlling the sea cow populations, tiger sharks in Shark Bay help the seagrass beds grow.
A good seagrass bed stores twice as much CO2 per square mile as forests do on land.
But in the world, tiger shark populations are becoming smaller, including some populations in Australia. Off Australia’s northeast coast of Queensland, it is said that tiger sharks have fallen by at least 71%, largely because of overfishing and bycatch. A reduction in tiger sharks means more seagrass eaten and less carbon kept in the ocean.
In Shark Bay, the tiger sharks are able to achieve the balance by keeping sea cow populations down, and not all the bay’s seagrass is lost. But here comes the question: What if sharks disappeared from the bay The need to understand how they support their ecosystems becomes even more urgent.

海洋环境小卫士——机器鱼
Chinese scientists say they have developed robotic fish that can remove microplastic particles (微小的塑料颗粒) from water environments.
Researchers working on the project say the robots could help to clean up plastic pollution in oceans around the world. The robotic fish are about 1.3 cm long.
They are made of a soft chemical material. The robots are built to remove microplastic particles which are smaller than 5 mm while moving through the water. Studies have found that microplastic pollution has been found in many natural environments. The material comes from the breakdown of plastic products and industrial waste.
The project was started by a team at Sichuan University in southwestern China. The researchers say the robots have already worked well in shallow waters and they plan to take more tests in deeper waters. The team says the robots can be controlled by light. They can swim up to 2.76 body lengths a second. This is faster than most similar soft robots.
Wang Yuyan is a member of the research team. According to her, the small, lightweight robot is now being used to collect microplastics for research. She also says that the team plans to increase that use, so the robotic fish can remove lots of microplastic waste from deep ocean areas.
According to the team, the fish can take in different kinds of microplastics and even repair themselves when damaged. And if a robotic fish is eaten by a real fish, it could safely digest the material.
Wang says similar robots could be developed to be placed inside the human body to remove unwanted materials or diseases.

六、[湖北襄阳期末] 任务型阅读
In a quiet village lived a boy named Tom. His grandfather, who worked hard on their farm, often said, “Every part of nature has a purpose.” Tom listened, but he didn’t really understand.
One afternoon, they prepared soil for tomatoes. Tom saw dry leaves on the ground and started to throw them away. Grandpa stopped him.
“These leaves are important,” he said. “When they break down, they become natural fertilizer (肥料) for the soil. They feed earthworms (蚯蚓) and make plants strong.” Grandpa showed Tom how to mix the leaves into the soil. Tom also learned to put waste into different groups— fruit peels were used to make fertilizer for the plants, and stones were collected to build small paths in the gar den.
When the sun went down, Grandpa pointed to a broken rainwater barrel (桶). “Years ago, villagers wasted water,” he said. “During a long dry period with no rain, the crops died because there was no water.” Now, they fixed the barrel to collect rainwater for washing tools and watering plants. Tom said, “We must save every drop!”
The next day, Tom noticed solar panels (太阳能板) on the roof. Grandpa explained, “Sunlight gives us free energy. It powers our lights and charges our phones.”
That night, Tom wrote in his diary, “True wealth isn’t about owning many things. It’s about caring for nature. What we give to the earth, it gives back to us.”

五、阅读表达
Born in a small village, I saw how busy farmers were in spring and what the season meant to them. Spring is a time when the land wakes up from sleep, and the fields are ready for crops. If you are lazy in spring,
you will get nothing in autumn. So, farmers
seem to compete with time in spring.
When I was a little girl, every weekend I was busy planting crops. Whatever it was, I had fun and learned a lot. For example, when we planted potatoes, we needed to cut the sprouted potatoes into pieces and make sure every piece of “seed” had one or two sprouts. It was really like a math game.
Farm work is also teamwork. That’s why every spring field is busy with people of all ages working in it.
While planting beans, my father dug small holes, and I put some seeds into each hole. The work was hard and boring, but when we worked together, it seemed easier and more interesting.
I felt the magic of life in spring as well. In a few weeks, the seeds sprouted, encouraging us to care for them by watering and so on.
As time went by, they grew into healthy plants. At that time I was really proud of how hard I had worked.
Because of these wonderful childhood experiences, I hold such a special feeling for spring.
