情境 2给孙萌介绍 “烦恼盒子”, 写烦恼、评级、交流, 学管理情绪应对压力。
任务二: 阅读理解 A(10分)
Dear Sun Meng,
In your last e-mail, you asked me what you should do when you are under stress and have worries. One good way that many students in my country find helpful is using a worry box. Let me explain how to make and use one.
Try using a worry box
Make a special box Use colourful things and pictures to make your worry box. Here is a picture of my worry-eating monster box!
Write down your worries Take some pieces of paper and write down your worries.
Rate (评价) your worries and store (储存) them in the box If you like, place each worry on a scale (等级) from 1 to 10. 1 means “a little worried” and 10 means “the most worried”. For example, today I put two worries into the box. I rate “losing my new bike” as a 2 and “getting bad grades in the maths exam” as a 7.
Talk it out Be sure to make some time every day or week to talk about your worries with your parents. Together, you can find the ways to deal with them.
Remember, it’s not healthy to carry worries around in your head. The worry box provides a good place to “share” your worries. By using it, you’ll learn to deal with your worries.

We did have a break in the afternoons. One afternoon, my friend Claude and I found an old basketball. We went to an outdoor basketball court for a game of one-on-one.
At that time, Claude was taller than me. He was also better at basketball. Gradually, I fell behind. I made up my mind and drove hard to the basket but missed it! The ball bounced off the rim (从篮筐弹回).
Just as I jumped up to catch it, I saw an elbow above my face. When Claude caught the ball, his elbow hit my eye hard. I saw stars everywhere. The pain was terrible. Claude kept saying “sorry” over and over. I laughed through the pain.
I spent the next few days walking around with a black eye, but it was worth it.
For years afterward, I got a laugh whenever I told the story and joked about Claude’s elbow of death. We all get an elbow to the eye sometimes. Our plans fail. Things work against us. 任务四: 任务型阅读
One day, my brother opened my father’s new book and drew all over the first page with a pen. When my father walked into the room, my brother became nervous. He knew that he had done something wrong. He was afraid that my father would punish him.
My father picked up his much-loved book, looked at it carefully for quite a while and didn’t say anything. Books were important to him, but what he did next was unexpected. Instead of punishing my brother, he sat down, took the pen from my brother’s hand. He smiled at the little kid and wrote next to the drawings made by John, John’s work, 1959, age 3. He also said, “You have made the book valuable.
I’m very thankful to you for drawing in my book.”
The years and the books came and went. We moved several times and experienced a lot, success and failure, happiness and sadness. From time to time we would open the book, look at the drawings, read my father’s words of love, and feel excited.
Now I know my father taught us that every bad event in life can have a good side. If we are prepared to look at it from another side, we’ll be touched by the kindness of others. But he also made us realize what really matters in life, people, not things, love, not anger .

Last summer my son, Eric, left for university in another country. Our once lively house became quiet and lonely. I missed and worried about him so much that I started sending him messages on the phone, mainly to say hello or to give him a word of warning.
One of my messages said, “So you told me you lost your wallet. If you are always careless, one day you’ll wake up and find yourself lost.”
I did get Eric’s messages, but most of them were about money. I was a bit angry.
They were not different from the notes he used to leave on the whiteboar d when he was at home.
“I bought a new pair of shoes. They cost me $90. Please help!”
“Money is running short because I’ve bought some books for my research paper. Help me please!”
Recently, however, Eric begins to send me all kinds of articles. Some are funny, some are touching and some make me think. He knows I haven’t got many things to do in my free time.
He says they will help me understand young men better and keep up with the times.
I read the articles slowly, like a careful student, with mixed feelings as well — my kid, who followed me around not long ago, has now become my teacher !
So I write back, “I’ve read all those articles. I’ll take them as a loving son’s hopes towards his mother.
He must be thinking that his mother is still young enough to accept new things. That makes me feel proud. We parents can’t learn quickly and change in both body and mind. Thank you, my son.”
In this way we share ideas, with a gentle and beautiful language we seldom use. Every time I read those messages, I feel warm.

四、任务型阅读
Although I have grown up, I act like a small child sometimes. I don’t like growing up to be an adult. Things become more difficult in the world of adults.
One day, I went to buy a Christmas card. After I went into the shop, the shopkeeper showed me where to find the cards. I met a young mother and her baby there.
There were a lot of toys on the shelf. The young mother passed by the shelf closely so that the little girl was able to pick up a toy. However, it seemed too difficult for the little girl to pick up a toy. Then the young mother stopped. She picked up a toy for her child and made her happy.
The big smile on the face of the little girl made me think of my childhood. When I was a small child, my parents came along whenever I needed them. They solved almost every problem for me. I seemed to get lost in that happy memory. Suddenly, the young mother’s words brought me back to reality.
“Dear, one day, when you become an adult, I hope you can manage your own life,” she said to the little girl.
The words woke me up. I was no longer a small child. I should learn to be independent and face problems bravely by myself. And my parents would certainly be proud of me.

心理健康——并非难以启齿的隐私
If I had a cold, I wouldn’t think twice about telling my friends or my doctor. For some reason, however, if I had a mental problem, I might not treat it in the same way.
At my elementary school, mental health was not discussed even once as far as I can remember.
This makes me wonder how many other schools are failing to educate their students on this topic. It makes me sad that children growing up with mental illness may feel like it is something to be ashamed of because it is never discussed. When I reached high school, mental health was still seldom discussed. But when it was a topic in health or biology class, I was given a broad idea that mental illness is a “thing” that really exists.
In my opinion, overstressed high school students could benefit greatly from more deep discussions about how to deal with mental health problems, such as how to know when you should car e about yourself or a friend, or who to reach for help. I know my friends and I could have benefited. Even if you personally have never faced mental health problems, someone you know is sure to have them, and you can offer timely help.
I also believe we need to normalize discussions about mental health at an early age, rather than hide them from sight. At school, I saw a student’s report on mental health education and how it can be carried out in the American school system. The student used the film Inside Out to explain feelings to younger kids. This report made me believe that it is possible to start these discus sions at a young age if we try.
Although we can’t change the way people think about mental health over one night, there are still things we can do. Asking our friends how they’re feeling is a good start.

时文阅读—讲好中国故事 中国学校里的VR
Schools in China are studying how they can put VR (= virtual reality 虚拟现实) lessons into their classroom experience. One such lesson uses VR to teach children fire safety. Instead of pens and paper, students wear VR headsets in the classroom. They are put into a virtual environment where a fire has broken out. They must find their way out and escape carefully.
At the VR medical school under Sichuan University, a virtual system allows medical students to examine the human body in different ways. They can even separate organs for closer examination. Students can practice their operation skills without a real body.
Simon Leung, vice-chairman of a VR company, said the company has developed VR classrooms and computers that send students to a 360-degree digital world.
Moreover, the VR headsets can tell whether children focus on the task at hand, Leung said.
Chinese parents, however, have a different opinion on VR lessons. They are suspicious of VR because they are unsure if the technology will have any bad effects. They are worried about their children’s eyesight, too.
Besides, VR equipment comes at a price. A top VR headset and computer could cost up to 10,000 yuan.

五、阅读理解
Peers are people who are about the same age as you. Peer pressure is when one or more peers make you feel pressured to do something, you feel you have to do that thing, because one or more of your peers are doing it, or are trying to convince (说服) you to do it. There are two different kinds of peer pressure.
Positive peer pressure is when you feel pressured to do something good. You might do something that is good for you, good for others, or good for the environment. Negative or bad peer pressure is when you feel pressured to do something you shouldn’t do. For example, it might be something that goes against rules, dangerous or bad for your health. It might also be something that goes against your values.
If a friend tries to pressure you to do something, you might feel you should do it to please your friend. You might even feel that the person will not be your friend if you do not do it. People often want to fit in with their peers and don’t feel they may stand out because they are different in some way. Sometimes people are afraid others will make fun of them if they do not do what everyone else is doing.
Here are some questions to ask yourself when you feel peer pressure to do something:
— Could I get into trouble for doing this
— Could I hurt myself or another person while doing this
— Does this go against my values
—Will I feel ashamed if my family or others find out about it
If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, you are feeling negative peer pressure. Say, “I do not want to do that.” Then walk away and feel proud that you made a good decision.
