Food waste is a big problem in Japan and all over the world. Japan produced around 5.7 million tons of food waste in 2019. The government plans to reduce that by around 2.7 million tons by 2030.
University of Tokyo researchers Kota Machida and Yuya Sakai have developed a way to change food waste into cement for building and other uses. This is the first-ever way created for making cement entirely from food waste. The researchers say their product is four times as strong as traditional concrete. This special cement can be used to make things like tea cups or chairs as well. However, there’s one additional feature—it’s also eatable.
Kota and Yuya are working for Fabula Inc., a company with the purpose of reducing food waste and helping fight global warming.
As expected, something so special took years to develop. It took a few tries to find just the right process. Kota and Yuya created the special technology while researching possible environmentally friendly materials to take the place of cement—concrete.
Cement production accounts for 8% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions(二氧化碳排放).
After a few failures, they realized they could get the cement to bind by adjusting the temperatures. “The most challenging part was that each type of food waste requires different temperatures,” Yuya said. In the experiments, Kota and Yuya successfully made cement using tea leaves, coffee grounds, cabbage and even lunchbox leftovers.
Fabula Inc. is now working to make tea cups and furniture.

This heartwarming artwork is just a small part of the imaginative world of Zhang Mingxiang, a 26-year-old artist from a village in Shandong Province, East China.
Zhang’s artworks are based on things that happen every day and puns in Chinese. His creative drawings have won over 6 million fans on different social media platforms and more than 60,000 pieces of his works have been sold on a video platform called Bilibili.
“I believe that today’s youth have their own thoughts and are good at expressing themselves. And my artworks serve as the encouragement for those who have just started working, providing a channel for emotional expression,” Zhang said.
However, Zhang’s path to art was far from straightforward. He was born in a village where his father made a living by working as a barber and renting out comic books. Zhang’s interest in painting came from those comic books.
Without much art education background, Zhang created paintings that were said to be “not right” by some experts, which made Zhang think that this path might not be well -suited for him.
Later, he decided to use Chinese ink brushes to draw, adding more creativity and vibrancy to his work, which made him popular online.
Zhang’s life also got improved by selling paintings. According to him, he could only make a few thousand yuan before his artworks won popularity, but now he is able to earn more than 200,000 yuan per month.
His dream, however, is even bigger. “My goal is to share my work with more people and inspire them with humor,” Zhang said.

Nowadays, we need to do lots of work in groups so often.
In almost every situation where you’re in a group, you will need a skilled leader. All groups need leaders and all successful groups have good leaders. Groups without leaders or with weak leaders almost always break down. Members of a leaderless group often feel disappointed and helpless. Time is wasted and the goals are not reached.
