One of Cao Cao's soldiers told the story to his family. Imagine that you were the soldier and complete the story.
Let’s complete
In the early morning that day, most of us were sleeping in our camps. Suddenly we heard some loud noises from the river. We quickly got up and went to look ...
It was a foggy day. We couldn’t see anything on the river. We could only hear many enemy soldiers beating drums and shouting on the river. We thought they were going to attack us. When the general saw this, he ordered us to shoot arrows towards the sounds. However, the sounds suddenly stopped. We were very surprised. Later we heard the enemy soldiers shout “Thank you for your arrows, Cao Cao.” Then we knew that it was a trick.
Think and discuss
Why is this story considered wise
How did Zhuge Liang use the weather (fog) and sound (drums)
This story is seen as wise because Zhuge Liang used clever, creative thinking instead of hard work.
He used the fog to hide his boats and straw men. Cao Cao's soldiers could not see them.
He used the drums and shouting to make noise. This made Cao Cao's army think they were under attack.
Think and discuss
What were the key elements that made Zhuge Liang's plan successful
Making use of the weather: Zhuge Liang predicted that there would be heavy fog. He used this opportunity to hide his boats so he could trick the enemy.
Making use of deception: Zhuge Liang used the sounds of drums and shouts to get the enemy to shoot arrows at the straw-covered boats. The arrows stuck to the straw.
Making use of the enemy's expectations: Zhuge Liang predicted that the fog would make Cao Cao cautious. He was right— Cao Cao thought it was a trap, so he did not send out his own boats to attack the straw-covered boats. This played into Zhuge Liang's hands.
Discuss and say
1. What does this story tell us about wisdom
Wisdom is not just about knowledge from books, but about solving problems in smart ways.
Sometimes being smart is better than being strong. You can win by using your brain, not just fighting.
Wisdom means using what you have (like fog and drums) to achieve your goal.
2. Do you know any other stories from Romance of the Three Kingdoms Select one and retell it to your classmates.
