Read and discuss
Read the passage about the history of money in China and discuss the question.
In ancient China, people traded goods like rice or animals because they didn’t have money. This was slow and difficult, especially for long-distance trading. It made buying and selling harder for people.
Later, China started using bronze coins. Coins were easier to carry than goods, and people could trade them more quickly. This helped farmers, traders, and workers buy what they needed and sell their goods faster.
Then, China introduced paper money during the Song dynasty, which is called jiaozi. It was lighter than coins, so people could carry more money. This made shopping and traveling easier, and people in big cities could buy goods from faraway places.
Today, many Chinese people use digital money through apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay. This is very fast—people can buy things or pay bills with just a phone, making life even more convenient!
So, each form of money has helped Chinese people trade and live more easily.
How did the money become the way they are today
Money became the way it is today because people needed a faster and easier way to buy and sell things. First, people traded things directly, like food or animals, but this was slow. Then, coins were made to help people trade more easily. Later, paper money was created because it was lighter than coins. Today, we use digital money because it’s easy and fast. This makes us trade and live more easily.
Role play
Work in groups and choose one form of money to make trades. Here is an example.
