Today was my first day back in San Francisco after camping in the Redwood Forest and visiting the wine country of Napa Valley. I have to admit that it definitely feels good to be back in the city again. And what a city---a city that was able to rebuild itself after the earthquake that occurred in 1906. There are so many beautiful old buildings-many sitting on top of big hills, offering great views of the city, the ocean, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco earthquake of 1906, a major earthquake and fire that destroyed some 28,000 buildings and killed more than 3,000 people. The quake was followed by a massive fire that swept from the business section. The blaze continued for four days, until its smouldering ashes were ultimately extinguished by rain.

What impressed the writer first about San Francisco
The beautiful old buildings, many sitting on top of big hills.
The Golden Gate Bridge is a technical masterpiece that can only be described in superlative terms. When the bridge was completed in 1937 it was the world's longest and tallest suspension bridge(悬索桥).
My hotel is near downtown, in the Mission District, one of the oldest parts of the city. Many of the people living here are from Mexico or Central America. This district used to be a poor area of town, but is now a centre for art, music, and food. ln fact, an art movement called the “Mission School” started here. It's influenced by graffiti art and comic art. I walked around looking at the street art for a few hours. It was quite modern and lively. Afterwards, I ate some delicious Mexican-Chinese noodles from a food truck. A real mix of cultures here!
n. 市中心;市中心区
adj. 滑稽的, 好笑的
adv. 然后,后来地
The Mission District in San Francisco, also know as The Mission, has historically been home to mostly middle-class Latino families. Today, the district is centered around Dolores Park and is known for its diverse culture, brilliant artwork, and beautiful architecture.
In the afternoon, headed to a local museum that showed the historical changes in California. I learnt that America got California from Mexico in 1848. In the same year, gold was discovered near San Francisco, which started a gold rush. Over 300.000 people came from all over the world to seek their fortune, and San Francisco quickly became a big city.
California Gold Rush, rapid influx of fortune seekers in California that began after gold was found at Sutter’s Mill in early 1848 and reached its peak in 1852. According to estimates, more than 300,000 people came to the territory during the Gold Rush.
adj. 历史(学)的
v. 寻找;探索
Many Chinese arrived during this period. To earn a living, some opened up shops and restaurants in Chinatown. Many others found jobs on farms, joined the gold rush, or went to build the railway that joined California to the eastern region of the country. The museum did a really good job of showing how America was built by immigrants from different countries and cultures. When these immigrants left their countries, they carried a bit of home in their hearts, and built anew home here.
Why did Chinese immigrants go to San Francisco
To seek their fortune in the gold rush.
When word of the gold discovery reached China, many men left their homes and took ship for California. Chinese merchants began building shops in what is now Chinatown. The Chinese population in San Francisco increased rapidly during the last half of the 19th century. The area still known as Chinatown became the neighborhood where the new arrivals settled, partly because of the ease of living in a Chinese community and also because at that time Chinese weren't welcome in other areas of the city.
This evening, I went to Chinatown. There were so many good cafes and restaurants to choose from. I selected a Cantonese restaurant that served its food on beautiful china plates. What great food!
That's enough for today. Tomorrow evening, I'm going to a jazz bar in the Richmond District. Can't wait!
What examples of ethnic diversity can you find in the journal
The Mission District which is full of people from Mexico or Central America; Mexican-Chinese noodles from a food truck; Chinatown.
It's a type of music of African American origin characterized by improvisation, syncopation, and usually a regular or forceful rhythm, emerging at the beginning of the 20th century. Brass and woodwind instruments and piano are particularly associated with jazz, although guitar and occasionally violin are also used; styles include Dixieland, swing, bebop, and free jazz.
vt. 选择;挑选
n. 瓷器,瓷制品
