When 16-year-old Li Wei received an invitation to his British classmate Emma’s birthday party, he was so excited that he almost jumped up. Having moved from Shanghai just three months ago, he felt the party was his first real chance to make friends. His mother had spent the entire morning in their tiny apartment kitchen carefully preparing a gift: homemade mooncakes wrapped in red paper decorated with dragon patterns. “In China, red brings good luck and the dragon represents strength,” she said proudly. “These mooncakes carry our family’s blessings.”

However, when she opened it, silence fell as she stared at the unfamiliar pastries (糕点). “What…are these ” she asked hesitantly. A boy leaned over and laughed loudly, “Looks like play-dough (橡皮泥)!” Heat rushed to Li Wei’s face as he stammered (结结巴巴地说), “They’re traditional Chinese mooncakes ...” However, his voice was swallowed (淹没) by the laughter that followed.
