people who have worries about ...
1. Listen carefully and show interest in others. One of the most important things is to listen to the person you speak to. If you are a good listener, you will find some good points to ask questions about. For example, if someone tells you their hobby and you can ask questions about it, they will surely be happy to continue the conversation.
What expressions can we use to express interest in others
Listen and find some good points to ask questions about, such as the hobby.
Can you think of a good question to ask about someone’s hobby
What’s the best part about playing the piano for you
2. Choose the right topic. Some of the best topics might be the weather, sports, music, films, food, or travel. However, it is impolite to ask someone’s age, weight, or other personal information. Also, if you don’t agree with others, don’t argue with them. Just move on to another topic.
④What good topics can we talk about
Weather, sports, music, films, food, or travel.
⑤What should you do if you don’t agree with someone
Don’t argue with him/her and just move on to another topic.
3. Be honest and sincere. If you have no idea of a subject, just say “I don’t know much about it.” If you want to make the other person happy, mention his or her strong points. But don’t just pretend to be nice, because people can find out you are not telling the truth.
⑥What can you say if you know nothing about the topic
Just say “I don’t know much about it.”
⑦How can we make other person happy
We can mention his or her strong points, but don’t just pretend to be nice.
4. Pay attention to yout body language. Sometimes it is just as important as your words. Don’t be nervous. Stand up straight, smile, and be yourself-you have a lot to offer.
What do you know about body language
Body language means different things in different places.
In the West, looking at someone while talking is good; in the East, it may seem rude.
Western people like more space and little touching; Eastern people are OK with standing closer.
Can you give some examples of positive body language
Smile naturally.
Stand or sit straight.
Keep your arms open, not crossed.
Nod gently to show you’re listening.
Make relaxed eye contact.

Post-reading
1e Discuss the questions.
1. According to the text, listening plays an important role in a conversation. What do you think makes a good listener
I think taking a genuine interest in what the other person wants to say makes you a good listener. We don’t listen properly if we are just waiting for the other person to finish so that we can say what we want to say.
1. Listen carefully and show interest in others. One of the most important things is to listen to the person you speak to. If you are a good listener, you will find some good points to ask questions about...
2. Do you think the tips are reasonable Why or why not
I think the tips are reasonable because they encourage people to be mindful when having a conversation.
3. What other tips can you add to the text
Another good tip I would add is to always ask open-ended questions, because they encourage better responses. For example, instead of asking “Did you have a good day ” we can ask “What was the best part of your day ”
