Are you an open book, your face broadcasting every passing emotion, or more of a poker face, not showing what you are feeling Scientists at Nottingham Trent University say that wearing your heart on your face, could actually give you a significant social advantage.
The study, led by Eithne Kavanagh, a research fellow at NTU's School of Social Sciences, involving over 1,300 participants, noticed striking variations in how much people moved their faces during conversations. Importantly, this expressiveness emerged as a stable individual quality. People displayed similar levels of facial expressiveness across different contexts, with different social partners, and even over time periods up to four months.
The researchers say that facial expressiveness is linked to personality, with more agreeable individuals displaying more lively faces. Facial expressiveness can also translate into concrete social benefits. In a negotiation task, more expressive individuals are more likely to secure a larger slice of a reward. The researchers suggest that for agreeable folks, dynamic facial expressions may serve as a tool for building good relationship and smoothing over conflicts. Across the board, the results point to facial expressiveness serving an“affiliative (有亲和力的) function,” or a social glue that develops liking and smoother interactions.
Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more “readable,” suggesting that a lively face makes one's intentions and mental states easier for others to decipher. Beyond frequency of facial movements, people who employ facial expressions more strategically to suit social goals, such as looking friendly in a greeting, are also more well liked.
The findings challenge the “poker face” common belief that a still and unemotional appearance is always most advantageous. Instead, they suggest that for most people, allowing one's face to mirror inner states and intentions can invite warmer reactions. As the researchers conclude, “Being facially expressive is socially advantageous.” So, the next time you catch yourself making lines on your forehead, or flashing a smile, know that your face just might be working overtime on your behalf.

5.What may facial expressiveness serve as in negotiation settings
A.A way to frighten competitors.
B.A method to hide personalities.
C.A tool to show personal quality.
D.A strategy to settle disagreement.
根据第三段中“In a negotiation task, more expressive individuals are more likely to secure a larger slice of a reward. The researchers suggest that for agreeable folks, dynamic facial expressions may serve as a tool for building good relationship and smoothing over conflicts.(在谈判任务中,更有表现力的人更有可能获得更大的奖励。
6.What does the underlined word “decipher” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Copy. B.Overlook.
C.Remember D.Interpret.
根据画线词所在句“Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more ‘readable,’ suggesting that a lively face makes one's intentions and mental states easier for others to decipher. 中“Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more ‘readable,’”可知,丰富的表情更“可读”,即更容易被理解和解读,所以“一张生动的脸更容易被人解读意图和精神状态”。
7.What may the author advise based on the findings of the study
A.Always wearing a still face.
B.Learning to be an open book.
C.Speaking out inner emotions.
D.Forcing a smile through tears.
根据最后一段“The findings challenge the ‘poker face’ common belief that a still and unemotional appearance is always most advantageous. Instead, they suggest that for most people, allowing one's face to mirror inner states and intentions can invite warmer reactions.

Everything you know is in your brain. For what you don't, you can ask the web. However, as you can imagine, in the past there were no computers and no web at all.Think about people living 3,500 years ago, in places where pyramids towered above them. The lack of explanations about how things worked inspired the ancients to make discoveries and feed their curiosity.
But do not think they knew nothing:In fact, we still wonder how the Egyptians could build the pyramids using their own, rather rudimentary equipment. They wrote down their knowledge on books(called papyrus scrolls)so that later people could benefit from their skills.
Living safer and healthier was a top priority for the ancients:When they hurt their heads in battles, they used to heal their wounds using the cures, some of which were recorded on a papyrus now known as the Edwin Smith Papyrus.Interestingly, this is the oldest written evidence of the word“brain”we have on Earth, and it dates back to 3,500 years ago!
However, writing the word“brain”on a papyrus did not solve all the questions about it.Around 2,500 years ago, for example, ancient Greeks wondered whether mind and soul lay in the brain or in the heart.
2,000 years ago, Roman physician Galen of Pergamon was sure he had solved the question:It was the brain, not the heart, that was the center of mental life. However, Galen had to convince the people around him that what he had discovered was true.It was not easy, mostly because people held their earlier beliefs.Every neuroscientist, just like Galen did, has to carefully observe reality, focus on something that is really interesting, think about how it can work, perform experiments, and discuss the data they get. This way, they can obtain convincing evidence to be shared with others.
8.What encouraged the ancients to make discoveries
A.The hope for keeping curiosity.
B.The need for writing books.
C.The search for explanations.
D.The wish to work faster.
结合第一段中“The lack of explanations about how things worked inspired the ancients to make discoveries and feed their curiosity.”
9.Which word can best replace“rudimentary”underlined in paragraph 2
A.Complicated. B.Primitive.
C.Electrical. D.Protective.
10.What can be learned about the Edwin Smith Papyrus
A.It was probably a medical text.
B.It was finished 2,500 years ago.
C.It was considered useless at first.
D.It was written by Galen of Pergamon.
根据第三段中的“...heal their wounds using the cures, some of which were recorded on a papyrus now known as the Edwin Smith Papyrus.”
11.How did Galen convince people of his discovery
A.By finding evidence from papyrus scrolls.
B.By asking many scientists to support him.
C.By following strict scientific methods.
D.By teaching people to do experiments.
结合文章最后一段中“...carefully observe reality, focus on something that is really interesting...discuss the data they get.”

There's little scientific agreement on how much money is enough to make humans happy.1. After that, higher incomes don't necessarily lead to greater happiness. But other research finds no such cutoff point. Money may not be a path to absolute joy, but it can certainly help. Here are a few research supported suggestions on how to get the most happiness out of your spending:
●EXPERIENCES MAKE US HAPPIER THAN THINGS
Cornell University psychology professor Gilovich says that buying an experience will probably result in more happiness than buying new things.
2. That's great for surviving after a major negative change or the loss of a sense like sight or smell. But that adaptation is not so helpful if you're looking to enhance your well being. Humans will soon get used to a new dining table or a fancier car. But experiences remain novel—and connect us to other people.
Beyond that, our tendency to compare material objects is greater than our tendency to compare experiences. It's easy to compare the size of a house or the price of clothing.3. “You build your experience around you,” says Gilovich, which means you get your own, unique memories to treasure and your own social connections to develop.
●TIME IS WORTH THE MONEY
Don't want to clean your bathroom Hate cleaning out the car?4. A 2017 study published in PNAS found that buying time for activities you enjoy brings consistent emotional rewards.
●SPEND ON OTHERS
Like spending on experiences, “prosocial” spending helps build social connections.5. Social psychologist Lara Aknin notes that giving creates a positive cycle. She says, “Giving to others makes us happy. The happier you are, the more likely you are to do it again.”
A.But experiences are often more personal.
B.This includes giving to charity or treating a friend.
C.That doesn't mean money can solve all one's problems.
D.For one thing, humans have a habit of adapting to new situations.
E.Most people fall into one of the two groups, the researchers found.
F.One 2010 study suggests an annual income of $75,000 is the magic number.
G.If you can afford to buy your way out of the tasks you most dislike, you should.
1.F 根据上文“There's little scientific agreement on how much money is enough to make humans happy. F“One 2010 study suggests an annual income of $75,000 is the magic number.
2.D 根据下文“That's great for surviving after a major negative change or the loss of a sense like sight or smell. But that adaptation is not so helpful if you're looking to enhance your well being. Humans will soon get used to a new dining table or a fancier car. But experiences remain novel—and connect us to other people. D“For one thing, humans have a habit of adapting to new situations.
3.A 根据上文“Beyond that, our tendency to compare material objects is greater than our tendency to compare experiences. It's easy to compare the size of a house or the price of clothing. A选项“But experiences are often more personal. 故选A。
4.G 根据上文“Don't want to clean your bathroom Hate cleaning out the car (不想打扫浴室? G选项“If you can afford to buy your way out of the tasks you most dislike, you should.
5.B 根据上文“Like spending on experiences,‘prosocial’ spending helps build social connections. B选项“This includes giving to charity or treating a friend.

故填where。
故填being given。
此处作谓语动词,主语是the digital project,为单数,此处意为“目的在于;旨在”,表达为be aimed at...,且根据后文的and it is可知,此处应用一般现在时。故填is aimed。
5.to show 考查不定式。 的方式”,表达为a way to do...,故应用不定式作way的定语。故填to show。
故填a。

Dear Mike,
It was delightful to receive your letter asking about the recent volunteer event our school hosted, themed “Green Life, Healthy Plogging”. I'm thrilled to share the exciting details with you.
The primary aim of this event was to promote environmental awareness and a healthier lifestyle among students and the community. The event itself was a vibrant fusion of physical exercise and environmental action. Participants, armed with gloves and reusable bags, embarked on a jogging route that took them through various parts of our city, including parks, streets, and riverside paths.
Participating in this event left me with a profound sense of fulfillment and optimism. It reminded me that every small step we take towards a greener, healthier lifestyle contributes to a larger, collective effort.
