Once the choice of the royal household, the watermelon has gained popularity rapidly over the years, and an online grocer reported that the fruit's sales on the platform had increased sixfold from 2020 to 2022, resulting in increasingly high demand for watermelon quality testers.
Lee,32, is extremely busy in the summer months.Just by holding the watermelon near his ear and knocking on the surface with his fingers, Lee says, he can tell by the sound if the fruit is ripe enough to be eaten or not.He works for a rural cooperative set up by a group of watermelon farmers, and puts thousands of watermelons through the “knock test” daily, before they are shipped to downtown warehouses where the platform sources its supplies.
The practice of knocking on watermelons to determine their ripeness can be found across cultures. In China, it is considered a national habit.Smart buyers tap on the fruit before purchase, to ensure their money is well spent. Some buyers knock on the fruit despite not knowing what the hollow sound means just to negotiate a better deal from the seller.
As fruit sales have moved to online platforms in a big way, those who make a living by checking the quality of the fruits with their fingers are much in demand.Lee is one among the growing group.Their task is to conduct knock tests on behalf of e buyers and ensure that the fruits selected to be sold online are uniform in size and quality.
Lee, who was once an award winning soccer player, now describes himself as a “goalkeeper for watermelons”.He quit soccer about four years ago and learned about melon knocking as an emerging profession and decided to become an apprentice(学徒) to an experienced farmer.
After a year's trial and error, Lee worked independently as a quality checker.“It is a highly demanding task.During the apprenticeship, I often cracked open melons to confirm my judgment. There are just no shortcuts,” he said.

A.To introduce an emerging profession.

2.What has led to the high demand for watermelon quality testers
A.The popularity of watermelons.
B.The big harvest of watermelons.
C.An increase in watermelon prices.
D.A rapid rise in online watermelon sales.
根据第一段中的“the fruit's sales on the platform had increased sixfold from 2020 to 2022, resulting in increasingly high demand for watermelon quality testers”和第四段第一句可知,西瓜在线上平台的销量猛增,这导致了对高质量西瓜检查员的需求越来越大。故选D。

A.He was once an award winning soccer player.
B.He dreams of being a professional melon knocker.

根据第四段最后两句“Lee is one among the growing group.Their task is to...ensure that the fruits selected to be sold online are uniform in size and quality.”和第五段第一句“Lee, who...‘goalkeeper for watermelons’.”
4.What can we learn from Lee's words in the last paragraph
A.Seeing is believing.
B.Every man has his value.
C.Great efforts and practice matter.
D.Excellence can be found in any profession.

New technologies tend to cause a cycle of concern, disorder, and conflict before eventually being accepted.Recent writings about artificial intelligence(AI) and other advances in computer science suggest that we are preparing to welcome the final stage of this latest round of invention.
The Last Human Job, sociologist Allison Pugh's new book centered on caregiving and human connections in the age of automation, warns readers against unreserved acceptance of these technological advances, citing “connective labor” as valuable human work that will not be easily replaced by algorithms(算法).“Absent from discussions about AI and automation,” Pugh argues, “is the impact that these systems might have on the emotional understandings we build of ourselves and others.”
Pugh sets the stage by arguing for the value of human connections and the importance of both seeing and being seen by others.“Practitioners(从业者) said they gained a sense of purpose simply from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless,” she observes. She then provides a summary of how care work is being increasingly automated, showing how quantification and measurement have taken over many aspects of human facing jobs, leaving little room for doctors, teachers, and others to build connections.
“When one goes to a doctor or a teacher, the encounter is full of the potential for shame, a risk that makes it all the more powerful when practitioners show empathic(同理心的) reflection,” writes Pugh.In Chapter 8, she explains how such interactions can be done right.Research conducted by herself and others identifies three key aspects supporting connective labor: “relational design,” or how people are set up to interact with one another; “connective culture,” or shared practices and beliefs that influence how people interact;and “resource distribution,” which includes time given for interaction, worker to client rates, and the extent of technology and data use, among other factors.
Pugh concludes by arguing that we need a social movement for connections.“We need to fight for what we might call our ‘social health’,” she maintains.
5.What is the main concern of Allison Pugh's new book
A.The impact of AI on future employment.
B.The approach to living and working with AI.
C.The increasing role of technology in caregiving.
D.The value of connective labor in the age of automation.
根据第二段的“The Last Human Job... citing‘connective labor’ as valuable human work that will not be easily replaced by algorithms(算法)”可知,Allison Pugh的新书The Last Human Job聚焦自动化时代的看护和人际关系,该书警告读者不要完全地接受这些技术进步,引证“连接性劳动”是有价值的人类工作,不会轻易被算法取代。故选D。
6.Why does the author mention “practitioners” in paragraph 3
A.To explain how to do care work.
B.To argue against the automation technology.
C.To prove the significance of human connections.
D.To discuss the challenges of privacy in caregiving.
7.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.The encounter. B.The shame.
C.The risk. D.The potential.
分析句子结构可知,When引导时间状语从句,“a risk that makes it all the more powerful when practitioners show empathic(同理心的) reflection”是同位语,解释说明“the potential for shame”,其中that引导定语从句,并在从句中作主语。该定语从句修饰“a risk”,也就是修饰“the potential for shame”。 由此可知,it在此指代上文的“the encounter”,故选A。
8.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The overview of Chapter 8.
B.The effective way to interact.
C.The new trend of caregiving.
D.The factors of avoiding shame.
