Solving problems caused by pets
Pets may sometimes cause problems. Role-play the situations below in pairs. You may use your own situations.
A dog scared your younger sister when she walked past it. You are going to talk to the dog owner.
You have a pet dog. It is usually quiet, but recently it started barking at night. One of your neighbours is unhappy and comes to you to complain about it.
S1: Excuse me. I want to complain about your dog.
S2: What’s the problem
S1: Your dog scared my younger sister the other day.
S2: Oh, I’m very sorry about that! My dog is usually
friendly. Can you tell me what happened
S1: My younger sister walked past your dog. It suddenly
barked very loud at her.
S2: I’m sorry. I hope your sister is OK now. I promise this
won’t happen again
Pets can sometimes cause problems. Read the conversation and answer the questions.
What did the first speaker want to complain about
What happened to his / her younger sister

Role-play the conversation. What phrases did the speakers use to complain and apologize
Tip: During the role-play, pay attention to your tone of

Situational practice
A new situation: A cat often climbs onto your balcony (阳台) and makes a mess. You decide to talk to its owner.
Useful expressions
How to complain about something:

Your ... scared ... the other day
... walked past your ... It suddenly …
How to respond:
What’s the problem
Oh, I’m very sorry about that.
Can you tell me what happened
I hope ... is OK now.
I promise this won’t happen again.
A possible version:
S1: Excuse me, I want to complain about your cat.
S2: Oh dear! What’s the problem
S1: Your cat always climbs onto my balcony and knocks things over.
Yesterday, the cat pushed my flowerpot off, and it broke into
pieces. I’m not very happy about this.
S2: I’m really sorry to hear that. I had no idea my cat was causing
you so much trouble. I’ll make sure to keep him indoors from
now on.
S1: Thank you. It has happened several times, so I hope this won’t
happen again.
S2: I promise. I’ll also put a bell on my cat so you can hear him
coming if he tries to get onto your balcony again.
Word linking
In spoken English, the consonant at the end of a word often links up with the vowel at the start of the next word.
put on → put on not at all → not at all
good idea → good idea for an hour → for an hour
Listen and repeat. Link the words where indicated, and pay attention to the loss of plosion.
(1) I’m afraid I can’(t) come to see you.
(2) I’m going to attend a talk abou(t) teaching.
(3) Can I have some money for a re(d) dress

/k n a /
/l k t/
/h r t/
/ fɑ r we /
A. 以/u/结尾(包括/u:/,/au/,/ u/)结尾的单词与后面的元音连读时,加上一个较轻的/w/,过渡更自然。
Just do it. How are you.
B. 以/i/结尾(包括/i:/,/a /,/e /,/ /)结尾的单词与后面的元音连读时,加上一个较弱的/j/,过渡更自然。
