John: Hello everybody! Here are three memory tests. They will test how
well you remember images, numbers and words.
Test 1: Visual memory test
Wendy: For the first test, look at the image for 10 seconds. (pause)
Now, cover the first image. Fill in the same pattern in the second
image. (pause)
Now look at the first picture. Did you do it right
John: Visual memory is the ability to remember pictures, shapes, and so on.
Visual memory affects the way we learn as a lot of information we
take in is visual in nature. We can improve visual memory through
practice and visual games.
John: Test 2: Number memory test
For the second test, Wendy will say two sets of numbers. When she
finishes, repeat the numbers after her. Here’s the first set.
Wendy: Nine-seven-five-four-seven. (pause)
Tapescript
John: Write the numbers down now. (pause) Next, the second set.
Wendy: Four-three-one-eight-six-two-six-two. (pause)
John: Now write it down. (pause) Wendy will read the numbers again. Listen
and check your answers.
Wendy: Nine-seven-five-four-seven. Four-three-one-eight-six-two-six-two.
John: How many numbers did you get right Most people can remember
about six or seven numbers for a short time. Putting the numbers into
smaller groups is a good way to remember them.
John: Test 3: Word memory test
Here’s the third test. Wendy will read out two lists of words. When she
finishes, repeat the words after her. Here’s list A.
Wendy: Sit, day, pen, cow, six. (pause)
John: Now write the words down. (pause) Here’s list B.
Wendy: Man, cat, fat, hat, sat. (pause)
John: Now write those words down. (pause) Which list was easier to
remember (pause) Yes, list A is easier. Scientists think that list B is
harder because the words in list B sound similar.

S1: How do you remember English words
S2: Well, one way to remember English words is to make a
word web. For example, if you want to remember words
related with “memory”, you can write “memory” in the
centre. Then draw lines outward from the centre and
connect other words with it, such as “forgetful”,
“improve”, “decline” and “brain”.
S1: I see! Can we make the web bigger
S2: Definitely. You can continue adding words to the web.
For example, you can write “active” and “stressed”
around the word “brain”.

1. Listen to the audio and read the following sentence. Pay attention to the pronunciation of the letters in brackets.
(1) Gla(d) to meet you.
(2) This is a goo(d) book about memory tips.
(3) That was the bes(t) day of my life!
(4) I fel(t) bad about what happened.
(5) Mos(t) people have moments of forgetfulness.
2. Summarize the rule of loss of plosion.
Loss of plosion
When two plosive consonants (e.g. /t/, /d/, /p/, /b/, /k/ or /g/) are next to each other, we do not pronounce the first one, and there is usually a short pause between them. We call this the loss of plosion.
3. Let’s play a game!
Mark the missing letters:
Read the words below aloud. When you come to a sound that loses it plosion (e.g. the G in “bi(g) dog”), make a “Stop!” sign with your hand.
blackboard sit down act
good boy red car picture
bedtime doctor
Now, let’s play!
4. Work in groups of four. Take turns reading the fifth paragraph of the main reading passage on page 101 (“Last but not least, ...”). Listen to each other’s pronunciation. Did you use loss of plosion correctly
Last but not least, it is important to get plenty of rest. Unless you take time to relax, your brain will find it hard to remember things. Besides, if you get too stressed or worried, your memory will become less sharp.
