四、素养提升(2025·河南中考改编)
Sunshine does make people happier. Imagine
how cheerful you are when it clears up after long
cold rainy days. Let’s discover science behind
sunlight.
Sunlight causes you to produce a chemical
(化学物质) called serotonin (血清素). When
you are exposed to sunlight, your body will
make more serotonin. Higher levels of serotonin
will keep you in good spirits. At night, when there is little or no light,
your body produces another chemical-melatonin (褪黑激素). It helps
your body relax and will make you feel tired, which can prepare you
for a good night’s sleep. You should keep a good balance between
these two chemicals.
However, for many people, it is hard to balance sunlight with
darkness. People who stay indoors a lot may not get enough sunlight.
The light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside
on a sunny day. That’s why it is believed that those people should get
outside in the sunshine. They can get some exercise, enjoy the fresh
air and be happy, all at the same time.
There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter.
People in those places are easier to get seasonal affective disorder
(SAD). People with SAD usually go through bad experiences such
as low energy and sadness. The most common treatment for those
people is to sit under bright artificial (人工的) lights for some time.
The roles that sunshine plays in people’s life are more than those
above. For example, your body produces Vitamin D (维生素D) from
sunlight, which is important for being healthy. In fact, there is more
science about sunlight for you to discover. So next time, when you
notice the sunshine on your shoulder, take a moment to think, “Why
do we love sunshine ”#1.5

Friendship Medal, the highest order of honor of China for
foreigners. It was Isabel Crook. In her over a century of
life, she spent more than 90 years in China and educated
a large number of foreign language students for China.
In 1915, Isabel was born to a Canadian family in Chengdu,
Sichuan Province. After graduating from the University of Toronto in
1938, Isabel couldn’t wait to return to China. In 1947, she started to
study the ongoing land reform(改革). A year later, she finished the
study and accepted the invitation to stay in China for language

articles from English newspapers and magazines. In spoken English
teaching, Isabel asked students to watch her in a given conversation
first. Since there were no tape recorders at school, she had to perform
the conversation again and again.

Last December 22,my parents and I arrived in Iceland for a
holiday. This country only gets about five hours of sunshine every day
in December. The sun doesn’t rise until about an hour before noon and
sets at around 4 p.m. The next morning, when we left for our glacier
(冰川)hike at 8 a.m.,it was very dark. It felt like we were
travelling at night.
Before the hike, our guide asked us to put on hats that can
protect our heads and special shoes. This way,we wouldn’t fall or get
hurt easily while walking on the ice. Our guide led us on our climb
up the glacier and on our visit to a huge ice cave. The cave was so
cool!
Around 1 a.m. on December 25,we were all in a deep sleep
when the hotel front desk woke us up with an alarm call. We put on
our warm clothing, ran downstairs and saw the northern lights! The
green, purple, red and yellow lights made up many amazing patterns.
It was like these lights were dancing in the sky. After more than half
an hour, the lights stopped. We went back to bed,but I was still
excited!#1.2

Deep under the Pacific Ocean lie coral reefs
colored by some algae that live with corals. Corals
usually provide nitrogen(氮)to algae, and in return
they get carbon(碳), which gives them energy.
In the early 1980s, a huge heat wave turned more
than 90 percent of these corals a pale, lifeless white.
And it was believed that about 50 percent of reefs with beautiful
corals might disappear by 2030. Heat waves warmed up the same
Pacific waters in the late 1990s and again in 2015-2016, but scientists
noticed that these heat waves didn’t influence the reefs as badly as the
first. Maybe corals have found a way to adapt(适应).
Swimming to cooler waters is not a good choice for corals, for it
makes them easily hurt by the changing climate. But corals are able to
adapt. Some turn to those algae that can deal well with heat. Others
can use rows of tiny hairs on their bodies to “fan” away too much
harmful oxygen(O 2 ) let out by stressed-out algae. Certain baby
corals change their own metabolisms(新陈代谢) in order to fight the
warming waters. But all these adaptations can protect themselves only
to some degree.
After studying and understanding these adaptations, scientists are
trying to find ways to help corals fight. If researchers can make corals
accept algae that can deal with heat pressure or if they energize genes
(基因) that can deal with heat pressure, it will raise the corals’
chance of living through future ocean heat waves.
“When I go down to the sea and see a beautiful healthy reef with
these colorful corals, I feel this pleasure of being in this underwater
world,” a famous biologist says. “It will be really sad to see it dead.
But that does drive you to want to use your skills and your love to
help fight.”#6
20.What can we know from Paragraph 1 ( )
B
A.Corals make algae more colorful.
B.Corals and algae depend on each other.
C.Algae provide room for corals to live in.
21.What does the underlined part “the first” in Paragraph 2 refer
to ( )
A
A.The heat wave in the early 1980s.
B.The heat wave in the late 1990s.
C.The reefs’ disappearance by 2030.
22.What difficulty do corals face ( )
B
A.They cannot change their own metabolisms.
B.They cannot completely adapt to heat waves.
C.They have no ability to swim to cooler waters.
23.Which would be the best title for the text ( )

四、素养提升(2025·北京中考模拟改编)
Cats have been known as loyal(忠实的) companions for
centuries.
Owning a cat has been proven to help reduce stress levels. Petting
a cat stimulates(刺激)the release of oxytocin(催产素释放),often
called the “love hormore”(荷尔蒙), which promotes relaxation and
reduces stress. Whether it’s watching your cat jump on a toy or simply
curling up for a nap (打盹), being around your cat can calm your
nerves after a hectic day at work or school.
Research has shown that spending time with a cat can help reduce
the hormone related to stress. The act of petting a cat can promote
feelings of relaxation and well-being. This makes cats excellent stress-
relievers for people facing high-pressure jobs or busy home lives.
Moreover, cats do much good to our brain health. A study found
that people who have owned cats for over 10 years are 30% less
likely to get brain diseases. Playing with cats and watching their funny
actions can keep our brains active.
When it comes to our emotions(情感), cats are great helpers
too. Scientists from the University of Tokyo discovered that when we
play with cats or watch cat videos, our brains make more “happy
hormone” that can make us feel better, and it helps fight feelings of
anxiety(焦虑) and sadness. Many people say that they feel less
lonely and more cheerful when their cats are around.
Cats also help us stay physically healthy. A study followed 1,
000 people, half with cats and half without. The study found that cat
owners usually have lower blood pressure and heart rates. Things like
taking care of cats pushes them to get up on time and have a regular
life, which can make our bodies stronger and help us fight off
illnesses.
In a word, cats are truly our partners in a healthier and happier
life. If you have a cat, give it a hug today and say thanks for all the
wonderful things it brings to your life!#8

27.What does the underlined word “hectic” in Paragraph 2 probably
mean?( )
A
A.Busy. B.Boring. C.Happy.
28.What does the example of scientists from the University of Tokyo
in Paragraph 5 show ( )
A
A.Cats can raise people’s happiness levels.
B.Interacting with cats improves brain health.
C.Cats can help people fight physical illnesses.

Do you know the five main senses we have? They are touch,
taste, sight, smell and hearing. They are controlled by different parts
of our brains. So we call the brain our built-in “BeiDou”. Brains help
our bodies work smoothly. Try this:close your eyes and touch your
nose. It’s easy, right That’s because our brains can receive messages
about where our body parts are. We can also stand on one leg without
falling down. If we lose our balance, our brains will give us orders to
fix it.
Brains are also life-saving heroes. Tests show that people see
spider pictures faster than flowers. Scientists aren’t completely sure
about the reason. Some suggest that this skill might come from ancient
times. Our ancestors(祖先) were often faced with predators. So
they had to protect themselves from dangerous animals like spiders and
tigers, or they would lose their lives.
Here is more about brains. Can you imagine seeing colors when
you hear music,or tasting candy when you see the sunshine It’s
called sense mixing. Scientists think this happens when different senses
intermingle(相互交织). Another fact is that temperature sometimes
influences our senses. Some people can feel storms coming through
knee pain. So we often joke that we’re “human weather apps”. Also,
our brains are able to make adjustment(调整) to some senses. If
someone can’t see well, his hearing or touch might become stronger.
Though scientists have done much research on the brain, there’s
still a lot to do. Have you ever wondered why some people are better
at sports What’s the secret to improving memory Then it’s time for
you to start your discovering journey.#4

3.According to Paragraph 3,what might happen if your senses mix?

“Silver’s known all along that the treasure
wasn’t in the hole!” said one pirate(海盗). “Let’s
kill him and the little boy, Jim. It’s five against
two!”, said one of the pirates.
Just then, shots rang out from the surrounding
(周围的) forest, and two pirates fell dead to the
ground. The remaining three ran into the forest.#3
Doctor Abraham Gray, and Ben Gunn then appeared from behind
some trees, their guns still smoking. Abraham ran after the escaping
pirates, but he soon returned without having caught them.
We all then headed back down the hill to a cave(洞穴) where
my friends had been hiding for the past few days. The doctor
explained to me that Ben Gunn, over his three years on the island,
had found the treasure from the hole, dug it up, and carried it bit by
bit to the cave. Ben shared his information with the doctor on the day
they met. This decided the doctor on a new plan. He went to Silver
that afternoon, made a peace agreement, gave him the now useless
map, and offered him the building. Before the pirates came to the
building, he and the others moved out to Ben’s cave, for there they
could guard the treasure.
“We would never have had to attack(攻击) the pirates, if they
had not caught you, Jim. We knew that once they found the treasure
gone, they would kill Silver; but we didn’t care about that. So in a
way, you helped save Silver’s life.” Said the doctor Abraham to me.
Silver, having overheard this, said, “While it is not pleasant
knowing how little you care about whether I live or die, doctor, thank
you all the same.”
In the cave, we met Trelawney and Smollett. They were both next
to the treasure. I could not believe my eyes. This was the treasure that
had cost seventeen lives.
