In the forest, trees often give each other space to reach for the sky,a habit that humans can learn from when it comes to setting personal boundaries.
Next time you go for a walk in a forest or woodland take a moment to look above you. You might find that the crown(树冠)resembles a breathtaking umbrella with channel-like gaps between the tops of the trees. This phenomenon has been documented worldwide since the 1920s, and is called “crown shyness”. It happens when trees appear to give each other space.
Even when trees grow close together, they show a mutual (相互的)respect and offer benefits. This is true in the case of “married” trees -where a tree intertwines(缠绕)with one resistant to disease, it shares the advantages of its friend. Maintaining healthy boundaries help trees to maintain good health, manage resources and protect the forest as a whole.
When humans fail to respect boundaries, the emotional and physical resources of individuals, and the community can be affected. In this sense, a boundary is a conceptual border. It helps to establish where you end and other people begin. It means taking responsibility for only your own emotions and actions, not other people's. You could think of your boundaries as a moat (护城河)around your castle, complete with a drawbridge that can be lowered or raised. As the gatekeeper of your castle, you decide who and what comes in and when.
Of course, marking out boundaries takes time, and some people might be unhappy about any changes you make. Establishing a clear line between you and the rest of the world, however, is essential for building the self-worth and self-care needed to function at your best in relationships.
4. What is “crown shyness”
A. A crown with channel-like gaps. B. A forest with umbrella-shaped crowns.
C. A behavior that trees give each other space. D. A phenomenon that trees compete for space.

B. The meaning of taking responsibilities.
C. The importance of setting personal boundaries.
D. The methods of managing individual resources.
7. What is the author's attitude to marking out a boundary
A. Favorable. B. Intolerant.

To understand the effect of ice melting around the world we first have to understand what an ice sheet actually is. Covering 5.4 million square miles in Antarctica (南极洲) and 656,000 square miles in Greenland, an ice sheet is actually a huge land of ice from the Ice Age. These sheets form in areas where snow that falls in winter does not melt entirely over the summer. This ice, home to different species of animals, is now melting at a rate that cannot support the life it currently holds.
Many of these creatures rely on ice sheets as land for resting, hunting and protection, yet as the size decreases, they are forced out of their homeland in search of other land on which to live. Often this means journeys to search for food and an imbalanced ecosystem happens when different species are forced together onto the coast.
Since the 1990s, the deer population has dropped by 56 percent — climate change has caused warmer temperatures over winter setting off rainfall instead of snow, which freezes more quickly underfoot and makes it harder to walk and search for food. In the summer, frozen layers of land melts and releases trapped diseases which bring death to animals. A similar situation has fallen on the polar bears who suffered a 40 percent population loss between 2001 and 2010.
Quite apart from these problems, the threat of sea levels rising if the ice caps were to disappear is approaching. If the Greenland Ice Sheet melted, the sea level would rise around six meters, and if the Antarctic Ice Sheet melted, sea levels would rise by around 20 feet. As a matter of fact, sea levels have risen about eight inches since 1880, three of which we've gained over the last 25 years. This seemingly small amount has already caused dangerous flooding, loss of farmland and more deadly storms.
While we're still a long way from losing the ice sheets all together, we've already lost too much and if we don't take climate change seriously now, we will certainly hit the point of no return.
8. What is an ice sheet according to the passage
A. It is an ice world for animals to live on.
B. It is a land of ice that covers all Greenland.
C. It is an area where ice never melts in summer.
D. It is a large area of ice that exists for centuries.
9. The melting of ice sheets brings about the following effects EXCEPT .
A. a longer distance to search for food
B. a decrease in animal population
C. a larger amount of snowfall
D. the release of more diseases
10. What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A. Sea levels are rising faster in recent years.
B. The ice cap will first disappear in Greenland.
C. All natural disasters happen due to sea level rise.
D. The Greenland Ice sheet will be the first to disappear.
11. What could be the best title for this passage
A. Changes of Sea Levels B. Ice, Sea and Animals
C. Greenland and Antarctica D. Effect of Melting Ice Sheets

Throughout our daily lives, we have known plenty of people and will know more. But how can we tell if someone is worth our trust In a paper published recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researcher gave us the answer.
The researchers asked 401 adults from the United States to fill out a questionnaire measuring their guilt-proneness (内疚倾向) in different situations as well as several other qualities, and then play a short online game. In this game, Player 1 is given 1, which they can choose to give to Player 2. Any money given to Player 2 is then automatically increased to 2.50. Player 2 can then decide whether to keep all of the money or behave in a trustworthy way by returning a part of the money to Player 1. The researchers found more guilt-prone people were more likely to share the money with Player 1. Actually, in follow-up studies, guilt-proneness predicted trustworthiness better than other personality qualities the researchers measured.
Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior The researchers found people who were guilt-prone also reported feeling a must to act in ethical (合乎道德的) and responsible ways while interacting (互动) with their partners in the game. People who are guilt-prone tend to avoid engaging in behavior that might harm or disappoint others. If they do something bad, guilt encourages them to try to make things right again.
Then, how can we use this research to ascertain whether someone is trustworthy “One way to do this might be observe how they respond to experience regret,” lead author Emma Levine, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Levine, explains. Another way is to ask them to describe a difficult dilemma they faced in the past, suggests co-author Taya Cohen, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This is particularly effective, Cohen and her colleagues have found, because it allows us to see if they're concerted about the effects their actions have on others.
12. What did guilt-prone player 2 tend to do in the online game
A. Keep all the money.
B. Share the money with Player 1.
C. Return the money to the researchers.
D. Spend the money on themselves.
13. Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior
A. It encourages people to harm others.
B. It makes people feel responsible to act ethically.
C. It makes people want to disappoint others.
D. It makes people avoid difficult dilemmas.
14. What does the underlined word “ascertain” in the last paragraph mean
A. Ask B. Express C. Describe D. Determine
15. How is the text organized and developed
A. By providing background.
B. By making a lot of comparisons.
C. By answering the raised questions.
D. By analyzing effects of guilt-proneness.

My daughters are lovely and attractive. The 4-year-old has big blue eyes and always wears a smile. The 7-year-old's long strawberry blond hair and sweet smile are already turning the boys' heads. I love everything about these girls, and they know it.
But I try not to tell them they're beautiful. My young daughters are totally innocent when it comes to the pressures of being a woman in our society. They know nothing about plastic surgery, diets, “feeling fat” models or eating disorders. We adults know all too much about such things and in the face of this distorted reality we tend to start telling our girls, as soon and often as possible, how beautiful they are.
I know this is wonderfully well-intentioned, and that we want to raise our girls' confidence from the very start. Here's the thing, though. We might think we're building our daughters up by telling them that they are beautiful to us no matter what, but what we're also doing is bringing the beauty pressure home to our littlest girls. The more I talk about beauty and looks, even in a positive way, the more I' m conveying the importance of those things.
However, it doesn't mean I don't praise my girls. Instead of saying “You look beautiful!” I might say the more specific “Don't you look fancy today!” or “Those colors go so well together.” It means that I treat my daughters not as my little dolls, but as real people who are developing their own sense of self and style. It means that they are in charge of how they look.
Naturally, I buy most of my girls' clothes. But I don't usually manage their outfit choices. My daughters can go girly with necklaces, or they can choose to give up dresses altogether. Of course we've seen some mismatching, but they own those styles. They never ask if they look pretty, and they walk with an easy confidence that has nothing to do with what I or anyone else will say about how they look. And that's the spirit I want them to take into their teens and adulthood.
16. What do the author's two daughters have in common
A. Both like to smile. B. Both have blond hair.
C. Both like strawberries. D. Both have big blue eyes.
17. Why is the author unwilling to tell her girls that they are beautiful
A. She expects them to face reality.
B. She wants them to find it themselves.
C. She doesn't want them to focus on looks.
D. She doesn't think they can understand it.
18. How does the author treat her daughters
A. She avoids praising them. B. She treats them as her little dolls.
C. She is particular about their clothes. D. She pays attention to their unique styles.
19. What can be learned about the author's daughters
A. They are highly dependent.
B. They are really confident.
C. They tend to take advice from their mother.
D. They have a good taste in dressing themselves.
