The Introduction
Timing
The Winter Solstice usually occurs between December 21st and 23rd. On this day, the Northern Hemisphere experiences the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year, as the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Capricorn. It marks the formal beginning of winter.

The introduction
Symbolism
In traditional Chinese culture, the Winter Solstice symbolizes the transition of yin and yang and the start of a new cycle. Even though the cold reaches its peak, daylight begins to lengthen afterward. The ancients viewed this as the starting point for the return of “yang” energy. Hence, it is often considered an auspicious day, carrying hopes of renewal and revival.
The introduction
Climate Characteristics
During the Winter Solstice period, the Northern Hemisphere receives the least solar heat, leading to a significant drop in temperature and the start of the coldest phase of the year. In most parts of China, the weather becomes cold and dry, especially in the north, where frost and chilly winds are common.
The introduction
Rainfall Patterns
At this time, northern China experiences very little precipitation, with mostly clear and dry weather. In southern regions, particularly around the Yangtze River Basin, although temperatures are low, there can still be some rainfall, often resulting in overcast, drizzly, or damp chilly conditions.

The Customs
The custom
Ancestor Worship
The Winter Solstice was historically a significant festival for ancestor worship. Many families prepare elaborate offerings and hold ceremonies to honor their ancestors, expressing respect and gratitude while praying for the family’s peace and prosperity.
The custom
Dumplings or Tangyuan
In northern China, a saying goes: “If you don’t eat dumplings on the Winter Solstice, your ears might freeze off.” Dumplings resemble ears, and eating them is believed to protect one’s ears from frostbite.
In southern China, eating tangyuan is prevalent. These round desserts, often filled, symbolize family reunion, completeness, and sweetness.
The custom
数九 Counting the “Nine Periods”
Beginning from the Winter Solstice day, people enter the coldest period known as “Counting the Nine Periods”. A popular practice is to fill in a “Nine Nine Cold Dispelling Chart” day by day for 81 days, tracking the winter’s progress and eagerly awaiting spring’s arrival.
