S 29 , a giant bent down and picked me up and I felt like one of the tiny Lilliputians.
“Please don’t hurt me,” I called to the giant.
He answered in a strange l 30 and I didn’t understand. Then he lifted me to his face and looked at me with great interest. I thought he wanted to eat me but he put me into his hand and carried me home.

When he 103 one of his hands into the air, we began to shout. He looked 104 and saw a huge army. “Of course,” said the king. “Take some ships to help you.”
Gulliver swam out to the boat, holding ropes from each of the 111 .
With the ships pulling and Gulliver 112 , the boat was brought safely to shore.
Gulliver and the king’s men set about fixing the boat for his long journey home. Soon, the boat was finished.
“I’d like to leave now,” Gulliver told the king. “But no one at home will 113 my story. Could I take some of your people with me ”
“I can’t possibly 114 that,” said the king. “But you may take some 115 and a sheep.”

He was 118 ! One sailor found him. The ship sailed over and 119 Gulliver. “Where have you come from ” asked the captain. “A place called Lilliput.” said Gulliver and he showed the captain the 120 from the emperor.

In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. ▲ .
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to make him happy, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke I was thinking, “At university I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor (水手).”
After several years of study, I became a doctor. Not long after, I asked my sweetheart, Mary, to marry me. Before long, we had children, a boy and a girl. They gave us great joy. I enjoyed being a doctor for the first few years. But then I became bored, and ideas of travel filled my mind. I imagined going to far-off places and seeing wonderful new things.
“Mary,” I said one day. “I need more adventure in my life. The captain of a ship about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will take, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope leaving from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port (港口) in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal!
“Welcome aboard, Doctor Gulliver,” he said. “First we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said. “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now as strong as a hurricane (飓风), made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course (航线)!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”

One morning, Reldresal, the principal secretary for private affairs (内务大臣), came to me. He let me hold him in my hand while we talked. He told me about a terrible war (战争) between Lilliput and a country nearby.
“My dear Gulliver,” he said, “please don’t think that everything is perfect here in Lilliput. The truth is very different. These days we are fighting against a country called Blefuscu.”
I was surprised to hear the news.
“More than 30,000 Lilliputians have died in this war,” he said.
“How terrible,” I said. “But why are you fighting ”
“We are fighting because of eggs,” he answered.
I could not believe my ears, but Reldresal continued to explain.
“On Lilliput we have always opened our boiled eggs from the bigger end. One day, however, the king’s grandfather cut his finger while doing this. As a result, the king made a new rule: everyone must open their eggs at the smaller end.”
“But why start a war because of this ” I asked. “Small end or big end, is it important ”
“It is very important for some Lilliputians,” Reldresal continued. “There have been many rebellions (反叛). Some of the people have escaped (逃离) to the island of Blefuscu because they do not want to change their egg-breaking habit.”
“Why have they moved to Blefuscu ” I asked.
“On the island of Blefuscu, they don’t have this new rule. They continue to break their eggs at the big end. The people there don’t want to go against their tradition. For this reason, the king of Blefuscu declared (宣布) war against Lilliput.”
The story seemed amazing to me. Can you imagine two countries fighting because of boiled eggs But I didn’t want to offend (冒犯) my friend. So I continued to listen with interest.

When his ship was destroyed in a storm, Gulliver was washed up on the island of Lilliput. All of the people, animals and things in that country were tiny. The average (平均) Lilliputian stood only six inches (英尺) tall—so to them, Gulliver was a giant (巨人)!
He soon made friends with the Emperor of Lilliput and the emperor’s family. They made sure that their guest was well taken care of! Each day, he was served with good meals.
Gulliver repaid the Lilliputians’ kindness by doing jobs for them. He could plough (耕) a field with his comb (梳子), lift rocks without difficulty and construct stone houses as if he was playing with toy blocks.
The only problem for Gulliver was getting a good night’s sleep! He had a quilt that was made of many Lilliputian blankets (毯子), and it was very comfortable. But his bed was made from lots of tiny beds tied together—and it was terribly uncomfortable! He couldn’t sleep well. After too many sleepless nights, Gulliver had an idea.
He made a plan on the largest piece of paper he could find. The emperor and empress looked at it, nodded, and began giving orders to their people. People in Lilliput tried their best to help to make his “invention”.
After many days, Gulliver’s invention was ready, and all the tiny people gathered to see it. The thing was about two metres long, and it looked like a strange floppy (耷拉的) balloon.
The crowd watched as Gulliver picked it up and began blowing into it through a tiny valve (阀门) in the side. It started to puff up (膨胀) as he filled it with lungfuls of (一大口) air.
At last, it was full, and he plugged (堵,塞) the valve with a cork (塞子). The object looked like a huge rectangular (矩形) cake as it sat on the ground!
Gulliver lay down on it with a sigh of (短暂的) satisfaction and pulled the patchwork (拼缝的) quilt up to his chin (下巴). His new air mattress (床垫) was much more comfortable than dozens of (几十个) little beds joined together. It was like sleeping on a cloud! He fell asleep as the crowd quietly go back home.

I have heard of many wars which have started for the funniest reasons, but can you imagine two countries fighting because of boiled eggs
Lilliputians thought Bleuscu was preparing a new attack very soon and they had more ships than we had here on Lilliput. I was worried, too. I was also sorry for the emperor and his people because they always treated me well. So I decided to go to the emperor and offer him my services.
“To thank you for your kindness, Emperor, I am ready to put my life in danger to protect Lilliput and all the Lilliputians. I will fight the Blefuscans for you!”
The emperor thanked me for my offer and understood that with my ‘great’ help, Lilliput had a good chance of winning the war. So we immediately began to prepare a plan of action.
The island of Blefuscu is separated from Lilliput by a narrow channel of water. I planned to swim across and catch the Blefuscan fleet before they attacked Lilliput. I knew that the Blefuscans did not know anything about me. So I had the great advantage of surprise. When they saw me coming across the water for the first time, you can imagine their fear.
I swam across the channel with some ropes. When the enemy saw the Man Mountain they all screamed and jumped off their ships into the sea. And so as planned, I caught the Blefuscan fleet of ships. I tied their ships to my ropes and pulled the ships back to Lilliput.
I arrived back on Lilliput pulling the enemy’s ships behind me. My plan was a success! I immediately became a national hero and the emperor gave me the highest honour in the country:I became a ‘nardac’(which in the Lilliputian language means a very important person).

In the days that followed, dear readers, I slowly became friendly with the emperor and his people. They did their best to make me feel at home and brought me food and drink. I learnt that the name of their country was Lilliput. The emperor of Lilliput was a noble-looking (仪态高贵的) man. He wore expensive clothes and had a big hat decorated with feathers. The queen was also very elegant (优雅的). Hundreds of little people worked together to make new clothes for me and they gathered six hundred mattresses (床垫) to make me a bed.
The people of Lilliput called me “Man Mountain” and they came from all over the country to see me. People had to pay to see me and the money made the emperor very rich.
One day the emperor organized a parade for his people. He asked me to stand and his army walked through my legs to make everyone laugh happily. There were thousands of soldiers, some of them on horses. Everyone was happy.
The emperor and his people always treated me well and helped me in many ways. They organized language lessons for me. So gradually I began to understand and communicate with the Lilliputians and learn more about their lives. But I was still a prisoner in my temple home and every day I asked the emperor the same question:
“________”
“You must be patient,” he always answered.
Then one day the emperor gave me the freedom to walk about Lilliput. This made a big difference to me. I was able to explore the land. I was careful not to hurt the people or damage their houses as I walked. Everyone stayed inside and ran to their windows to look at me. I enjoyed looking into the windows of the emperor’s beautiful palace to see how he lived.

On 20th June 1702, I set off for Surat, on a ship called the Adventure.
The first part of our trip went well. But later there were some terrible storms. The winds were so strong that they sent our ship off course. We didn’t know where we were.
At last, when the storms stopped, we saw an island. We had no more drinking water, so the captain sent me to find some fresh water on the island. I set off with some other men in a small boat. And when we got there, I travelled around the island by myself while the men looked for water.
That was a big mistake. When I went back, there were no men and no boat! Then I saw them rowing back to our ship with a giant (巨人) following them in the sea! They were very afraid.
I ran as fast as I could. I then climbed up a big hill and when I looked around, I saw fields. Then I saw other giants working in the fields.
“On my last trip, I was a giant on an island of tiny (小的) people and now I am a tiny person on an island of giants!” It was not a nice feeling. I was so sad and hid behind a big tree. I had to think of a plan, but at that time one of the giants saw me.

Lots of people came to the temple to see me. The emperor and his men were kind to me. They brought food and drink. And then six teachers from the university taught me the language of the country. In three weeks, I was able to speak their language and learned much about their country, Lilliput.
Soon after that, the emperor told two officers to look into my pockets. So, I picked up the two officers, and put them into one of my coat pockets. Then I put them into all my other pockets.
They found a pencil, a watch, and several other things there. The officers made a list of the things which they had found in my pockets, and gave the list to the emperor. He told me to throw down my sword, my pistol, and some other things. The emperor liked my watch. He told two officers to take it away. They carried it on a pole.
My pistol was also very strange to them. The emperor wanted to know how to use it. I had to fire the pistol in front of the emperor and his men. When I shot it, hundreds of small people fell to the ground.
The emperor often came to see me to learn different things.
One day when I was talking with the emperor, a messenger came to him. The messenger said to the emperor:
“When we were walking along the beach, we found something huge and black. Nobody knows what it is. It may be some great sea-beast, but it is not alive, for it doesn’t move.”
Soon I learned that the strange thing was my hat. I was wearing it when I was in the water, but I lost it when I was up on the beach.
The emperor told some men to bring it to him.
The next day, they made two holes in the brim and fastened a piece of rope to the thing and tied the rope to five horses. The horses pulled the hat for half a mile.

In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. But I often daydreamed about going to sea.
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to please him, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke, I was thinking, “At university, I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor.”
“Mary,” I said one day, “I need more adventures in my life. The captain of a ship about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will take, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal!
“Welcome aboard. Doctor Gulliver,” he said, “First we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said, “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now as strong as a hurricane, made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”

I was careful to behave as well as possible, to persuade the King to give me my freedom. Lilliputians soon began to lose their fear of me. They called me the Man-Mountain. Sometimes I lay down and let them dance on my hand, and from time to time children came to play games in my hair. By now I was able to speak their language well.
One day the King invited me to watch the regular entertainments, which are greatly enjoyed by him, his family, and his lords and ladies. I was most interested in the rope-dancing. A very thin rope is fixed thirty centimeters above the ground. People who want to become the King’s most important officials jump and dance on this rope, and whoever jumps highest without falling gets the best job. Sometimes the King orders his lords to dance on the rope, to show that they can still do it. This sport is, of course, rather dangerous, and there are occasional (偶尔的) deaths as a result. It seems a strange way of choosing officials.
There was another interesting entertainment. The King holds a stick in front of him, and sometimes moves it up and down. One by one, people come up to him and jump over the stick or crawl under it. They go on jumping and crawling as the King moves the stick. The winner is the one who jumps and crawls for the longest time, and he receives a blue ribbon (缎带) to wear round his waist. The second best receives a red ribbon, and the third best gets a green one. Many of the Lilliput lords wear their ribbons proudly at all times. I had certainly never seen entertainment like this in any of the countries I had visited before.

It was a happy time for me, but there were many dangers because of my small size. There are some incidents (事件) that I remembered clearly.
Every morning Glumdalclitch carried my box to the window. One day she carried me to the window as usual, and then she left me there. Some huge wasps came in through the window, and entered the box. They were the size of birds in England, and they were very fierce (凶猛的). I was afraid of them. I took out my sword and fought them. I killed four of them. Luckily, the others flew away.
Another dangerous moment that I remembered was this: Glumdalclitch left me in the garden one day, and the weather was very bad. First it rained, and then it hailed (下冰雹) very hard. The hailstones were the size of tennis balls, and they hurt me badly. I tried to hide under a tree, but I was still hit by some of them.
Another danger came from an idea that the Queen had. She knew that I liked boats, and she ordered one of her servants to make a little boat for me. The servant put the boat into a tank of water on the table. I spent many hours in this boat. One day, however, a frog jumped out of the water into the boat. I thought the boat would sink, and I was afraid. I was lucky, and I managed to push the frog out of the boat.

My shock and surprise disappeared when I understood that this island was my salvation (得救). I began to shout for help to the people on the island. They did not understand me but they understood that I was in difficulty and made signs for me to move towards them. They moved closer and when I was underneath the island they sent a chair down to me on a chain and pulled me up.
The people on the island were friendly and accepted me but they were incredibly strange. They wore the strangest clothes and they all had their own personal man servant who carried a large balloon on the end of a stick. The servant’s job was to tap (轻拍) his master on his mouth or ear when he needed to speak or listen to something. This was because these masters passed most of their time in intense thought (沉思). They thought about the strangest subjects for hours and hours a day. And as a result they had no sense of practical things in life, such as speaking or listening, or looking where they were going.
I later learnt that this island was called Laputa. Some people took me to speak to the king. When we arrived at his palace, the king was lost in thought and didn’t notice me. I waited for more than an hour until, finally, one of his servant tapped him on the mouth and he spoke.
I didn’t understand their language and could not answer the king. One of the servants tried to tap me on the mouth with his balloon to make me speak. I protested (抗议,反对) very quickly.
“I know exactly when to speak and listen,” I told them. They understood the sense of what I said. But they thought I was a complete idiot because I did not pass my time in thought, too. Then after dinner, a servant came to teach me their language and tell me about life on Laputa.
