The festival is mainly to honor Qu Yuan, a famous poet from the Warring States Period. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who loved his country deeply. However, his wise suggestions were ignored by the king, and his country was finally defeated by an enemy. Heartbroken and hopeless, Qu Yuan jumped into the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month to show his loyalty.
When the local people heard the news, they rushed to the river with boats. They rowed hard to look for him and threw zongzi(rice dumplings) into the river to prevent the fish from eating his body. Over time, these actions developed into the two most important traditions of the festival--

The festival comes from a beautiful legend. A long time ago, a devil caused lots of trouble for the Dai people. A brave girl killed the devil to save her people. When the devil died, his head touched the ground and started a big fire. People had to splash water on the fire to put it out. Since then, splashing water has become a way to celebrate the festival. It also stands for washing away bad luck and welcoming good luck. Everyone knows that the more water you get, the more good luck will come
to you, so laughter and cheerful shouts fill the air everywhere.
Besides this classic activity, dragon boat races are also a big highlight. On the river, boatmen row hard and fast, while people standing by the river cheer loudly for their favorite teams. What’s more, the Dai people dress up in beautiful traditional clothes to put on wonderful shows—they sing songs, dance the famous peacock dance of their ethnic group, and share delicious food like sticky rice together.
