My father loved lists. Over 25 years, he recorded 539 books he read and 322 episodes of Booknotes on C-SPAN, which he watched every Sunday night. He also kept grocery lists for his mini-fridge — Pepsi, coffee, heavy cream — and daily tasks. These notes filled small notebooks, always near his reading chair. He wrote them until December 31, 2004, when cancer stopped him. After his death, I gathered the notebooks into a box. For years, I couldn’t bear to open them.
Born in 1927 in Lowell, Massachusetts, my father was the son of a leather factory worker and grandson of an Irish immigrant who cleaned horse manure from the streets. Despite his humble beginnings, he was brilliant. After a summer in the leather factory, he graduated high school at 16 and went on to Boston College. He served in World War II and later earned degrees in physics. Then he worked at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, moved his family from Lowell to Boston, and sent his kids to private colleges. It seemed he had left Lowell behind — but not so. Deep down, he saw himself simply as a working-class Lowell kid who had just read a lot of books.
He didn’t travel much, and didn’t feel the need. When I asked if he regretted not seeing the world, he defended himself: “I’ve sailed the Atlantic in stormy winds, climbed the Himalayas, and stared down wild animals.” Then he added, “I read.” Books were his world. From them, he learned to survive landslides, shark attacks, and even gorilla attacks. He had what he called “a rich inner life” — and it was true.
Shortly before his death, he opened a small purple notebook and began one last list. It described details from 1930s Lowell — things lost in time. Twenty years later, I found it. In his flowing handwriting, Dad reached back to Lowell — a time long gone, now captured only in memory. Lost and only in memory— that was how I was experiencing Dad now. Squinting my eyes, I saw not just the city he loved, but the quiet, extraordinary man I called Dad.
4. Why are the details of the father’s lists mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To reflect his ordered and thoughtful life.
B. To imply his fear of forgetting.
C. To reveal his reliance on control.
D. To show his love for literature and cuisine.
5. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean
A. He felt torn about his background.
B. He struggled with his identity.
C. His success originated from his roots.
D. He stayed humble and rooted.
6. What does the father’s quote in Paragraph 3 mainly reveal
A. His desire for real adventure.
B. His dream of global travel.
C His pride in inner journeys
D. His escape from physical world.
7. What is the main theme of the passage
A. Pursuit and action. B. Memory and identity.
C. Ambition and escape. D. Loss and regret.
C
As the planet warms up and oceans rise, extreme weather events are becoming the norm. Getting notified in time to prepare for a disastrous hurricane or heat wave could be the disparity between life and death. AI can help. Two studies published in the journal Nature described the benefit of two AI models that could improve weather forecasting.
The first AI-based system is called Pangu-Weather, which was developed by the Huawei Cloud team. It was capable of predicting global weather a week in advance. A majority of countries use numerical (数值)weather prediction models. These models use math formulas to create computer models of the atmosphere and oceans for predicting future weather with data from them. What makes Pangu-Weather different is that the Pangu-Weather model is deeply trained with the help of 39-year global weather data, preparing it to forecast temperature, pressure, and wind speed. When compared to the numerical weather prediction method, Pangu-Weather was 10,000 times faster and no less accurate. Pangu-Weather also contains a 3D model, unlike past AI forecasting systems, that allows it to record atmospheric states at different pressure levels to further increase its accuracy.
Pangu-Weather can predict weather patterns 5—7 days in advance. However, it can’t forecast precipitation (降水). As precipitation prediction is vital for extreme weather forecasting, a second Nature model, NowcastNet, fills this gap. It can accurately predict rainfall 6 hours ahead, helping meteorologists (气象学家)study weather patterns in real-time more effectively.
NowcastNet focuses on detailed, realistic descriptions of extreme rainfall patterns in local regions. It uses radar observations from the US and China, as well as deep learning methods, to predict precipitation rates over a 1.6-million-square-mile region of the eastern and central US up to 3 hours in advance. 62 meteorologists from China tested NowcastNet and ranked it first, out of four other leading weather forecasting methods, in reliably predicting heavy rain, which it did 71 percent of the time.
While generative AI models have good prospects in weather forecasting, experts point out that replacing existing systems has many challenges. However, in 5 — 10 years, these models may surprise us.
8. What does the underlined word “disparity” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Difference. B. Decision. C. Settlement. D. Struggle.
9. What is the advantage of Pangu-Weather compared with the numerical weather prediction method
A. It can predict precipitation more accurately. B. It can provide a 3D view of the weather.
C. It is much faster and equally accurate. D. It can record more detailed atmospheric states.
10. What can we learn about NowcastNet from the text
A. It is mainly used to predict global weather patterns.
B. It was developed by 62 meteorologists from China.
C. It uses radar observations and deep learning to predict precipitation in the US.
D. It ranks first among all weather forecasting methods in predicting heavy rain.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The impacts of climate change on extreme weather events.
B. The challenges in using generative AI in weather forecasting.
C. The explanation of the traditional numerical weather-prediction method.
D. The introduction of two AI-based weather-forecasting models and their features.
D
These days, institutions and companies love to announce what they’re doing to tackle the climate crisis. But in reality, the claims are not always accompanied by real, effective action — a shady practice known as greenwashing. But at the same time, other companies are not communicating their sustainability actions. This phenomenon is known as “greenhushing” and it could be just as dangerous as greenwashing. When organizations tone down their efforts, the broader sustainability conversation can be weakened — and the opportunity for businesses to be drivers of social change could be lost. But why would companies deliberately hide things that they are doing well
Our research has investigated how and why organizations take part in greenhushing. We focused particularly on how this occurs in service organizations. First, we examined the communication strategies of 300 UK hotels engaged in environmentally friendly practices across three channels: hotel websites, profiles (简介) on travel site , and social media platforms. We found that 62% of UK hotel websites do not include sustainability information, with only 2% of social media posts referring to it. Although booking platforms signal the sustainability of hotels that have third-party certifications, hotel websites often don’t provide much explanation in this regard.
Next, we uncovered three main reasons for the tendency towards not communicating — or even hiding — sustainability actions. First, managers spoke of reputational risks, highlighting their fear of being accused of greenwashing. Second, managers said they lacked confidence about the effectiveness of their sustainability practices. Finally, many service managers highlighted that instead of communicating good practice, they relied on sustainability certifications provided by third-party institutions to do the talking for them. But consumers don’t always understand all these certifications.
To build trust, it would be better for organizations to provide clear and comprehensive information about their specific sustainability actions. The sustainability dialogue needs to be promoted so that businesses have the opportunity to act as genuine drivers of social change.
12. What does the author think of greenhushing in paragraph 1
A. It is a new form of greenwashing. B. It slows down sustainability progress.
C. It urges organizations to make efforts. D. It is more harmful than greenwashing.
13. What do the statistics presented in paragraph 2 indicate
A. A rise in the quality of environmental posts.
B. A gap between green actions and communication.
C. A drop in the communication effectiveness of hotels.
D. A contrast between hotel websites and other channels.
14. What may cause companies to avoid communicating their sustainability efforts
A. Fear of unfair criticism. B. Consumers’ low demands.
C. Lack of third-party certifications. D. Managers’ dependence on laws.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Greenhushing: Businesses Understating Sustainable Practices
B. Greenhushing: Businesses Discouraging Environmental Efforts
C. Greenwashing: Businesses Promoting Sustainable Development
D. Greenwashing: Businesses Showing Environmental Commitments
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In literature, flat and round characters offer distinct approaches to character development. Flat characters are defined by a singular symbolic characteristic. ____16____ For example, the evil stepmothers in traditional fairy tales are flat characters, serving to drive the story with their simplicity.
By contrast, Jia Baoyu in Dream of the Red Chamber exemplifies (举例说明) round characters, defined by inner conflicts, contradictions, and personal growth. ____17____ They reflect the unpredictability of humanity, making them more relatable and dynamic to readers.
In earlier literary works, flat characters often symbolized heroic ideals, such as the brave heroes in The Odyssey. As society moves away from idealized heroes, literature focuses more on characters’ personal struggles, reflecting how writers began to see humanity in a more complex way. With the rise of realism in the 19th century, round characters gained popularity, as seen in Jane Eyre, which allowed for the exploration of personal identity and internal conflict. ____18____
However, not every character that appears in a story needs to be deep. ____19____ Imagine the main character is taking a taxi to a hotel. If we make the taxi driver a round character, the focus could shift from the main character to the taxi driver, potentially taking attention away from the main plot.
____20____ They together create tension and richness in a literary work. Flat characters provide clarity and focus, simplifying themes and making them accessible to readers. Meanwhile, round characters reveal human complexity, showing life beyond black and white.
A. Neither type of characters is better than the other.
B. Such characters stand out for complexity and depth.
C. We don’t get heartfelt backstory to enrich their roles.
D. If flat characters are round, they may “steal the show”.
E. This shows how literature reflects evolving social views.
F. Round characters are more engaging than flat characters.
G. They are more like a spotlight, drawing attention to one aspect.

It was a hot day in New York City. I had brunch with a friend and picked up my new glasses. All done and headed back on the train. I wanted to yell at a couple of people for their rude behavior, but wisely just sat quietly.
An old black gentleman entered the far end of the train car. In worn but neat clothes, he tipped his faded cap and greeted everyone with a warm “Good afternoon, folks.” Most ignored him, with cold blank faces. Then, he started to sing. I didn’t turn my head, but I felt a smile in my soul. Many people ask for money on the train, but I always feel happy when someone offers music instead. It feels like a gift.
I let the notes settle in for a second before my eyes wandered. A young boy across from me, maybe ten, watched him, swaying (摇摆) to the rhythm, his mother too distracted by her phone to notice.
He started his second song and my heart did a happy dance. “Lean on me, when you’re not strong. I’ll be your friend...” I love that song! Without thinking, I softly sang a little harmony with him. Right away, I decided he could have the $5 bill in my purse.
He looked tall and thin, but he had a strong voice and kind energy. Life had clearly been hard for him, but he still stood tall and carried himself with quiet dignity.
I rolled the bill tightly and waited for him to make his way to me. He held the overhead bar to steady himself as he inched down the car, pausing briefly beside each seat like he was waiting for a sign — though no one glanced up. No one was making any moves to give him coins or reach for their wallet.

【答案】Dear Mr. Green,
I’m Li Hua, writing to express my opinion on the logos designed for our English Literature Reading Room. Among the three options, my favorite is “Open a Book, Open a World”.
This logo vividly shows the essence of reading. A book serves as a gateway, leading us to explore diverse cultures, distant lands, and profound ideas. It inspires students to immerse themselves in the vast ocean of knowledge, which can broaden their horizons and enrich their minds.
I sincerely hope this logo can be adopted for our reading room. Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

When the song ended, coins and bills appeared in the man’s cap from every direction. He stood taller, pride glowing in his smile, and I felt a quiet joy — proof that even in a weary city, music could open hearts and bring strangers together.
