Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly. He had never lost a contest, but that didn’t calm him. Being on top counted, and he pushed himself to remain there.
The other kids, however, rarely came over to him. No way was he going to let them ignore that he’d win again. Still, he often wondered: why didn’t winning make people like him better
He opened his toolbox and began assembling (组装) his launch pad. Then he checked his rocket again. It looked perfect — especially compared to the others.
But one caught his eye. A thin boy named Ed lifted it carefully. Its paint shone in the sunlight, and its parts fit perfectly. His critical eye detected that this rocket could beat his.
“Nice rocket,” said the boy nervously. “Thanks,” Tom replied flatly, and then regretted it. “Where do you usually launch it I’ve never seen you here.” “In the field behind my house.”
“You don’t care for these contests ”
“I never really thought about them. I keep pretty much to myself.”
The announcer explained the competition. Tom barely listened, his gaze constantly drifting to Ed’s rocket. Suddenly his heart did a leap — as Ed lifted the rocket to place it on the launch pad, his fin (翼) had caught against something, pulling it away from the fuselage (机身) — not enough to break it off, just enough to loosen it.
But Ed hadn’t noticed. He glanced back at Tom and gave a thumbs-up. Tom felt a surge of guilt but decided he wasn’t going to say anything. Anyway, it was up to Ed to keep checking his rocket.
Then the competition began. Most rockets gained respectable heights, while a few shot wildly. Tom watched, but the knowledge he had about what was wrong with their rockets soured within him. It was like something he had stolen.
“Ed Malovich will be our next contestant,” the announcer said, interrupting Tom’s daydream. Immediately Ed lifted his rocket and headed to the launch area.

The Charm (魅力) of Schoolyard
In the charm of school life, where classrooms are seats of knowledge and the schoolyard becomes source of memory, there are a fund of stories mixed with humor, warmth, and teacher-student relationships.
Mr. Smith was a country teacher, but not an ordinary one; he was a storyteller, a mentor (人生导师) , and a friend to all his students. His classroom was a world of its own, full of colorful characters and brilliant ideas. One day, during the noon break, a student named Alice noticed a wandering kitten padding (潜行) through the familiar grounds where many schoolyard tales were born. Alice took her to Mr. Smith, who had magical Tricks for handling even the smallest things. With Mr. Smitt’s permission, Alice and her classmates built a shelter for the kitten in a corner of the campus. The days turned into weeks, and the kitten grew under the tender care of Mr. Smith and his students. Once in a while, she became a temporary resident of the classroom, much to the delight of the whole class. They named her “Schoolyard”, a name that generalized the spirit of their school days.
As the year progressed, Schoolyard became not just a kitten, but a tie connecting each of them and a thread of continuity in their lives. She played on desks, slept in chairs, and hid in folders, thus becoming an unofficial mascot (吉祥物) of the classroom. The students found comfort in her presence, and Mr. Smith, joy in watching them grow through her company.
As graduation neared, Mr. Smith gathered his students for one last lesson. He told them that they would soon be exploring new horizons. He reminded them that life was full of unforeseeable twists and turns along with unexpected potentials, just like the appearance of a kitten in their schoolyard. At the moment, the students were greatly touched and deep down there arose a strong love for those memorable warmth and hearty laughter of their school days.
Thereafter, Mr. Smith and the students agreed to meet here once again in ten years.
A decade later, Mr. Smith greeted his former students at the school gate.
“Isn’t that our Schoolyard ” cried Alice, gazing at the classroom door.
1. Mr. Smith seemed shorter and his hair was silver, yet he was as energetic as ever.
2. Some of them landed a decent job, some led a quiet life, while some went through twists and turns.
3. They chatted delightedly, as if they had not left the campus.
4. The old schoolyard, bathed in the gentle glow of the afternoon sun, was a living album of their youth.
5. A wave of nostalgia(怀旧) swept over them as they stepped onto the familiar campus, each corner whispering a story from the past.
6. The reunion unlocked memories of a time when they had studied and played together.
7. Schoolyard worked like a time machine, immediately transporting them back to the sunny campus life.
8. But for her, their school life would not have been so colorful.
9. They felt a strong connection to this place, as if a part of them would always belong here.
10. The classroom, once filled with their laughter, now stood as a silent witness to the passage of time.
11. Their happy faces filled the air with warmth while merry laughter rang throughout the campus.
12. A joyous reunion atmosphere was in the air.
13. The classroom was bathed/immersed in the warm reunion atmosphere.
The students gathered around her, gently stroking and petting her. Laughter filled the air as they recalled their playful days with Schoolyard on campus. As the sun set, the students bid farewell to Mr. Smith, Schoolyard, and each other. Standing in the place where their journey began, they felt grateful for the memories and the profound impact Mr. Smith had left on their lives; they knew these schooldays and the charm of Schoolyard, their loyal companion, would always hold a special place in their hearts.(共7张PPT)
It all began with a “fun” indoor hockey tournament (曲棍球锦标赛) for U11, U12, and U13 kids. The organizers even encouraged U10 players to join, so naturally, the boys and girls I coached jumped at the chance. They loved hockey, but most had never played indoors before — not even once. They didn’t even have a goalkeeper. “No problem,” the organizers promised us. “You can put an extra player on the field.”
On the day of the tournament, we found out our U10 team was drawn into a group with U13 players — many of them were provincial-level stars. It was going to be a mismatch, to say the least. But our kids They were excited. They wanted to try, and they were ready to face whatever came their way.
That was, until the first whistle (哨声) blew.
When the older kids, skilled and confident, began flicking (挑击) the ball with incredible force our kids had to dive and duck because they had no protective masks (面罩) on their faces. With no goalkeeper to protect the net, they had no choice but to block the shots (射门) with whatever they had — arms, legs, and pure willpower. But still, it was a one-sided killing, with my little players struggling to fight a losing battle.
I looked at the organizers, hoping they would step in. But their response was cold. “This is just a fun tournament,” they said, “but there are prizes. Flicking stays.”
And so, our young team faced wave after wave of nonstop shots from players much older and stronger. Each time the ball slipped past them and a goal was scored, I saw something in their eyes-although they didn't look for sympathy, that cager search for hope was clearly weakening. None of the parents, teachers, or schoolmates seated aside was making a sound. It seemed the entire arena (竞技场) was in dead silence.
I couldn’t just stand there, doing nothing.
The atmosphere shifted after the timeout (暂停).
1. Overwhelmed with urgency, I lifted my hand immediately to signal the referee for a timeout.
2. The whistle pierced the dead silence.
3. The kids dragged themselves to my side, exhausted and breathless, some of whom collapsed onto the floor.
4. Their faces, once bright with anticipation, now turned pale with despair.
5. Kneeling down to look into their eyes, I spoke with a firm yet gentle tone: You have done a very good job. I am proud of you. But keep in mind that we are not here to win against giants but to show courage, teamwork and love for hockey. Even if we lose the game, we should do it with grace and dignity.
6. Be a warrior instead of a worrier. I am always with you.
7. We formed a tight circle, arms around each other, and made a new plan: Play for pride, not points.
8. Forget the scoreboard. Let’s set our own goal: to walk off this field with our heads high, no regrets.”
9. Bravery is not the absence of fear but the strength to keep going
10. A sense of collective resolution settled over the team. (降临,笼罩在)
11. The initial panic gave way to a calmer and more strategic mindset.
12. To my relief, when the kids stepped back onto the field, depression gave way to determination.
13. They stood a little taller, their chins up, ready to face the challenge.
