A
Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying“no”, criticizing, and getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it is the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that a serious dialogue may start a riot. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.
Humor is often the best way to keep a small misunderstanding from escalating (升级) into a big deal. Recently a neighbor of mine had a quarrel with his wife as she drove him to the airport. Airborne, he felt miserable, and he knew she did, too. Two hours after she returned home, she received a long-distance phone call. “Person-to-person for Mrs. Ⅰ. A. Pologize.” intoned the operator. “That's spelled ‘P’ as in...” In a twinkling (眨眼间), the whole day changed from bad to lovely at both ends of the wire.
An English hostess with a quick wit was giving a formal dinner for eight distinguished guests whom she hoped to enlist (赞助) in a major charity drive. Austerity was a fashion in England at the time, and she had asked her children to serve the meal. She knew that anything could happen... and it did, just as her son, with the studied concentration of a tight rope walker, brought in a large roast turkey; he successfully elbowed the swinging dining-room door, but the backswing threw the bird onto the dining-room floor.
The boy stood rooted, the guests staring at their plates, Moving only her head the hostess looked at her son,“No harm Daniel”, she said, “just pick him up and take him back to the kitchen”... she enunciated (发音) clearly so he would think about what she was saying... “and bring in the other one. ”
A wink and a one-liner instantly changed the dinner from a red-faced embarrassment to a laughter.
1.What is the main idea of the passage?( )
A.Humor is the key to success in our work and lives.
B.Humor enables us to deal with difficult situations effectively.
C.Humor is the best way to criticize someone without losing his face.
D.Humor makes fun of any difficult situation.
2.Which of the following is NOT stated in the passage?( )
A.Comedians on TV are believed to have done a lot in making people more tolerant (容忍) of racial and religious differences.
B.To make up differences, humor is a most acceptable and effective means.
C.People often turn to humorous ways when meeting with difficult situations because of its effectiveness.
D.Only by adopting the means of humor can one succeed in some jobs.
3.What caused the roast turkey to drop onto the floor?( )
A.The backward movement of the door.
B.The son's rude behavior.
C.Someone happened to be at the door.
D.The bird raised by the family.
4.What do you think would probably be the result if the hostess got angry and scolded the son?( )
A.It would make the embarrassing situation worse.
B.The son would refuse to serve the guests any more.
C.The son would talk back and make the mother all the more angry.
D.The guests would leave before the dinner was over.

Afel was small when he first saw snow. But it wasn't real snow. There was no real snow where he lived. He saw it in a picture book. He asked his mother, “What are those white fields?”She tried to explain, but it was very difficult for him to understand what this cold, ice rain was. It didn't matter. He was already in love with snow.
He dreamed about snow all the time. He thought of big white fields. He thought about feeling cold.
When Afel was watching the TV at his uncle's at 12, the programme was full of snow, lots and lots of it, And there were creatures flying across the snow like strange animals or fantastic birds. They had hats which covered all their heads, big goggles over their eyes like swimmers, and strange shoes.
He knew from his uncle they were skiers skiing in the Winter Olympics, and that the next was in Vancouver, in 2010.
“Perfect,” he thought, “enough time to become a brilliant skier.”
“But there's no snow here!” people told him.
Afel didn't care. He made a pair of skis from two pieces of wood. At first he couldn't move, but he practised and practised until he could move quickly across the sand or the earth. He tried to fly down the hills like the people on TV, but he couldn't.
“Never mind,” he thought, “It's a start...”
“How will you go to the Olympics?”people asked him, “Our country doesn't even have a team.”
Afel didn't care. He found that Jamaica had sent a bobsleigh(雪橇) team to the Olympics a few years ago. Then he thought his country could have a skier.
So every night, out in the middle of the desert, Afel now practises skiing down sand dunes. He dreams that the yellow sand is the white snow. He dreams that he will bring the gold medal home with him, when he is the world champion.
5.Why was Afel unable to understand what his mother said?( )
A.Because his mother explained poorly.
B.Because he never experienced snow.
C.Because he saw snow in a book.
D.Because he scarcely felt cold.
6.What did Afel see on the TV programme?( )
A.Skiers. B.Animals.

7.Which word can best describe Afel?( )

B.A Mother with a Strong-willed Kid
C.A Dream to Be a Skier

This is Renia's Diary, a journal that was hidden for years in a safe box. Now it's coming to light with the help of Renia's sister and niece.
For a long time, Elizabeth didn't even know that her older sister Renia had kept a diary as a teenager in Poland. Then suddenly one day Elizabeth got the diary and started to read it. She was totally stunned and couldn't get very far. “It was too painful to read it,” Elizabeth recalls. “I just put it in the basement and didn't think about it.”
Alexandra, Elizabeth's daughter, grew up knowing about the locked diary. As Alexandra got older, she was more interested in it. “If I could read this diary, maybe I'll explore some things from the past,” she thought.
She got the diary from its hiding place. When she read it, Alexandra was shocked. “It's the description of a wonderful girl who showed great courage in terrible times. My aunt's world comes to life as the diary shifts between a teenage girl's daily life and the war.”

At first glance, the business world is no place for young women, as my co-founders and I have been told on many occasions. In spite of this pessimistic view of women's opportunity in business, we three college-age girls with zero experience in business started off with a highly ambitious goal: to start a seaweed farm in North Carolina, and grow as much seaweed as possible to help reduce the carbon emission (排放) and nutrient pollution from agricultural sources.
In the beginning, our ideas were either ignored or scoffed by the researchers from whom we sought help and advice. But we carried on with our research even if others wouldn't provide us with answers. We didn't dread trying to work them out ourselves. We discovered which species could grow in warmer water, and we'd identified potential markets into which we planned to sell the product. We've spent the last two years setting up the first seaweed farm in NC, applying for a patent (专利) and competing with five final teams in front of the United Nations for one million dollars.
Despite all of our efforts, many industry experts remained unwilling to take us seriously. But as often happens in business, the same characteristics we were ignored for were, in reality, our biggest competitive advantages. Our age gave us the strength to bounce back from failure, and our background as environmental scientists, rather than businesswomen, helped us find new marketing opportunities. For every 10 farmers who claimed nobody would ever want to feed their cows seaweed, we found one who was interested. For every 15 cosmetics producers who refused to answer our cold calls, we stuck to the one with an interesting idea for a seaweed lotion (乳液).
Over the course of our early business development efforts, we have had access to a wealth of resources, programs, and individuals who work constantly to help us succeed. By staying focused on bringing our ideas to light, our team has demonstrated that entrepreneurship is exactly the right place for the hopeful.
5.What was the major cause for their difficulties in starting business?( )
A.They were women.
B.They were young.
C.They lacked experience.
D.They suffered prejudice.
6.What did they do to make their business successful according to the passage?( )
A.They expanded their seaweed farms.
B.They experimented on seaweed species.
C.They got their product officially recognized.
D.They consulted the United Nations.
7.What is the third paragraph mainly about?( )
A.How they benefited from their weaknesses.
B.How they got others interested in seaweed.
C.How they made themselves more competitive.
D.How they approached potential customers.

Bill Gates and the president of General Motors have met for lunch, and Bill is going on and on about computer technology. “If automotive technology had kept pace with computer technology over the past few decades, you would now be driving a V-32 instead of a V-8, and it would have a top speed of 10,000 miles per hour,” says Gates. “Or, you could have an economy car that weighs 30 pounds and gets a thousand miles to a gallon of gas. In either case, the sticker price of a new car would be less than $50. Why haven't you guys kept up?”
The president of GM smiles and says, “Because the federal government won't let us build cars that crash four times a day.”
Why is that funny (or not funny, as the case may be) Human beings love to laugh, and the average adult laughs 17 times a day. Humans love to laugh so much that there are actually industries built around laughter. Jokes, sitcoms and comedians are all designed to get us laughing, because laughing feels good. For us it seems so natural, but the funny thing is that humans are one of the only species that laughs. Laughter is actually a complex response that involves many of the same skills used in solving problems.
Laughter is a great thing—that's why we've all heard the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” There is strong evidence that laughter can actually improve health and help fight disease. In addition to their daily tasks, the brave Mars pioneers will also have to be ready to deal with all kinds of medical mon colds and headaches may be easy to deal with medication. To help them with more serious issues, like severe skin burns or bone fractures, scientists from the Dresden University of Technology (TUD) have developed a 3D bio-printer capable of producing human tissue in space.
3D bio-printers are similar to traditional 3D printers with one key difference. Instead of creating objects from materials like plastic, they deposit layers of biomaterial, made largely from living cells, to build complex human tissue. Since the raw material is not readily available, researchers begin by taking a few cells from the required organ, such as lung or skin, and cultivating (培养) them in the laboratory. Once enough cells have been generated, they are used to create “bio-ink,” which is loaded into the printer.
This, as you can imagine, is no easy task, and despite trying for many years, scientists have still not been able to regenerate human organs for widespread use. Bio-printing in space has even more challenges. The biggest is finding cells to cultivate and create the required bio-ink.
The TUD scientists believe the difficulty can be overcome by using cells from the injured astronaut. “Using biomaterial from the astronauts themselves also eliminates the risk of transplant rejection,” says Nieves Cubo Mateo, a bio-printing specialist at TUD.
The TUD researchers, who revealed the first bio-printed bone and skin samples, believe that once developed, the technology could help astronauts treat acute injuries. Tommaso Ghidini, head of ESA's Structures, Mechanisms and Materials Division says, “Carrying enough medical supplies for all possibilities would be impossible in the limited space and mass of a spacecraft. Instead, a 3D bio-printing capability will let them respond to medical emergencies as they arise.”

There is no denying that everyone has felt worried or upset before a contest or sports game. A study in 2000 found that “high levels of anxiety during competitions is harmful, worsening the performance and even leading to dropping out”. An example of this is John Daly, an American golf player who was once one of the best of his time. The great amount of pressure placed on him to win made him extremely anxious. His anxiety reached such a high level that he was unable to complete a tournament and walked off the course in the middle of the round. Over the course of his career, he quit from 49 professional matches due to the anxiety he experienced.
In fact, anxiety can have a number of negative effects and changes to the body, mind and behavior. Anxiety causes your body to tense up and increases blood pressure. When this happens, it becomes more difficult for your body to move fluently and efficiently, meaning actions and movements become unnatural. The terror you experience as a result of anxiety is so overwhelming that it may even lead to body paralysis (瘫痪). An example of this is stage fright, which may be experienced right before a public competition. When feeling overwhelming fear, the athlete may be unable to move, talk or act at all.
Anxiety has a negative effect on not only athletes, but also students and young people, particularly when it comes to tests and exams. This “test anxiety” occurs in 33% of students and can affect their performance in exams and overall achievements. As time goes on, the age at which children suffer from anxiety is becoming younger.
Anxiety leads to the poor academic performance and low scores. This is because the anxiety becomes so over whelming that you lose the ability to think clearly. It has been proven that students with anxiety score lower on tests than students who do not suffer from anxiety.
Anxiety can also affect students' willingness to engage in class or participate in class discussions. Again, this can have a negative impact on their performance because they are unable to communicate with the teacher by asking questions. This then leads to confusion and further worry about a task, resulting in additional anxiety. This same worry also applies to peer learning (同伴学习) because this involves sharing ideas with other students. A student with high anxiety is unable to share these ideas, meaning they quit from activities and their learning is limited.
Anxiety reaches such a point that some of the students either refuse to go to school until they are able or drop out completely. In fact, 49% of anxious adults report having left education early and 24% indicate anxiety as the primary reason. After all, how can a person possibly learn something or perform well when their mind and body are in a constant state of terror and worry

Vijay Gupta is known to classical music lovers across the United States. He serves as the first violinist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In that job, he often plays to large crowds, including many very rich people. When he is not performing, he organizes concerts for homeless people. “They have reminded me why I became a musician.” he said.
Last week, Gupta was recognized for being a founder and the artistic director of Street Symphony. The group has performed at homeless shelters, jails and halfway houses for about eight years. Gupta is among the 25 winners of the 2018 MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the “Genius Grant”. Each winner will receive $625,000 over five years to use as they wish. The money is coming from a private group, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It awards grants (补助金) to people whose work it considers exceptional and whose work “inspires hope in us all”. Gupta said he got the idea for Street Symphony while teaching Nathaniel Ayers, a trained musician whose mental illness led to his homelessness.
The 31-year-old winner said he did not know yet how he would spend the money. He has been a performer since the age of seven and the award will give him “space to breathe, plan and look ahead”.
Another winner is Rebecca Sandefur, an associate professor (副教授) of sociology and law in the University of Illinois. The Associated Press says her research actively supports new ways to involve poor communities in the U.S. justice system.
47-year-old Sandefur created the first national mapping of civil legal aid providers. It shows which states had the financial (金融的) resources to provide such aid and which did not. She also found that the cost of legal services was only one of the things preventing poor people from getting lawyers. Among the others were fears of unfairness (不公平) in the legal system. Sandefur noted that a lot of attention had been paid to problems with the criminal justice system, but more attention must be paid to the civil side of the law, which also affected millions of people.
5.Why does Gupta win the award?( )

C.For organizing a group playing for the homeless.
D.For the companionship with Nathaniel Ayers.

7.What was the extraordinary thing that Sandefur did?( )
A.She made it easier to get legal help for the poor.

I never saw my father back home from work late or ill, nor did I ever see my father take a night out with the boys. He had no hobbies but just took care of his family.
For 22 years, since I left home for college, my father called me every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. He was always interested in my life—how my family was doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, England or Florida.
Nine years ago when I bought my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days, painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run, and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.
Five years ago, my 71-year-old father spent five hours putting together a swing set (秋千) for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him. But again, I had the laundry to do, and the house to clean.
The morning on Sunday, January 15, 1995, my father telephoned me as usual, this time he had seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to go to church, and I cut the conversation short.
The call came at 4:40 p.m.. That day my father was sent to hospital in Florida. I got on a plane immediately, and I vowed (发誓) that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him and really get to know him.
I arrived in Florida at 1:00 a.m., but my father had passed away at 9:12 p.m.. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.
In the years since his death I have learnt much about my father, and even more about every single day.

My teacher picked up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?”
Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher may have found out. She seldom became angry, but she was this time.
“Oh,” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a mischievous throw of a baseball. If I admitted the guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How could I be able to pay for a big window like that I didn't even get an allowance. “My father is going to have a fit” I thought. I didn't want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward. I told the truth. “I did it.” It was hard enough to say what I had done.
My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.
“I know how you like birds.” she said as she stood looking down at my guilt-ridden face. “Here is that field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours now. It's time that we should get a new one for the school anyway. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed, but I am rewarding you for your truthfulness.”
I couldn't believe it! I wasn't being told off and I got my own bird field guide—the very one that I had been saving money up to buy.
All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me every day, and it will echo forever.

It was the first time I had noticed him properly. Before this, Jack had just been a friendly young fellow assigned by the hotel to accompany me into the wildlife park nearby. But then he caught my attention by asking me to shut up.
“It's just a garden spider, don't scream!”he said, looking at the creature with more affection than I could muster for most humans. I had indeed screamed—I was in the front seat of a jeep and the spider was on my leg. I couldn't get off the jeep and even if I could, I wouldn't have, as my eyes and mouth were fixed with fear by the scary little thing.
“I don't care what it is, make it go away!”I even shouted. I thought he would pick the thing up and throw it out of the jeep right at that moment. He did something quite else. He pushed his leg towards mine and held out the cloth of his trousers to gently let the spider on to his own leg. The spider climbed a little bit and then just stopped there, stuck to his knee. I sat there staring at the spider for any sudden movement—if a tiger had walked by then, I would not have even looked at it.
I was shocked that the man was completely at ease with a spider dangerously landing on his knee. About 15 minutes later, he pushed his knee forward to the dashboard and the spider immediately climbed off his knee and on to the jeep. “The poor thing had been trying to get off me,”he said, “I only noticed now that it was trying to reach the dashboard, so I helped him along.”
I wondered then about this man, who thought about the spider with such kindness. Where and when did I lose my sympathy towards the unfamiliar Now, when faced with a row of ants, my first reaction is no longer to attack them. I just skip over them and we both carry on. Thanks to Jack, I learnt to live with the not so beautiful bits of nature.

I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a mischievous throw of a baseball. If I admitted the guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How could I be able to pay for a big window like that?以及第五段第一句“I know how you like birds,” she said as she stood looking down at my guiltridden face. 可推知,作者并不是故意打破窗户的,故选A项。
5.答案与解析:D 细节理解题。根据第三段中的If I admitted the guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How could I be able to pay for a big window like that I didn't even get an allowance. “My father is going to have a fit,” I thought. 以及第四段My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.
I couldn't believe it! I wasn't being told off and I got my own bird field guide—the very one that I had been saving money up to buy.可知此时男孩感到吃惊;根据最后一段All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me.
结合第一段“Before this, Jack had just been a friendly young fellow assigned by the hotel to accompany me into the wildlife park nearby.”
根据文中第三自然段“He did something quite else. He pushed his leg towards mine and held out the cloth of his trousers to gently let the spider on to his own leg. (他做出了完全不一样的反应,他把腿伸向我,扯出裤子,轻轻地让蜘蛛爬到自己的腿上。)”由此可知,相比于作者或者其他人,他对蜘蛛表现了更多的爱。故选D。
11.答案与解析:C 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Thanks to Jack, I learnt to live with the not so beautiful bits of nature.”可知,今后作者会学会宽容的对待这一类生物。故选C。
