In the past 30 years, the nonprofit organization Friends of Trees planted trees along the streets of Portland, Oregon. Now, a new study shows that each tree planted was connected with significant reductions in nonaccidental and cardiovascular (心血管的) mortality (死亡率).
Evidence pointing to a connection between exposure to nature and lower mortality is obvious. Between 1990 and 2019, Friends of Trees planted 49，246 street trees. The research team looked at the number of trees planted in a given area in the past 5，10 or 15 years. They connected this information with mortality due to cardiovascular, respiratory (呼吸的) or nonaccidental causes in that same area, using data from the Oregon Health Authority. The results showed that in neighborhoods in which more trees had been planted, mortality rates were lower. This connection was significant for cardiovascular and nonaccidental mortality, particularly for males and people over the age of 65.
Furthermore, the connection got stronger as trees aged and grew：The reduction in mortality rate connected with trees planted 11 to 15 years before was double that observed with trees planted in the past 1 to 5 years. This means that older trees are connected with larger decreases in mortality, and that protecting existing grown trees may be particularly important for public health. This study doesn't provide a direct opinion into how trees improve health. However, the result that larger trees have a greater health effect than smaller ones is telling, because larger trees are better at absorbing air pollution and reducing noise.
“We observed the effect both in green and less green neighborhoods, which suggests that street tree planting benefits both，” said Geoffrey H. Donovan, first author of the study. “Besides, the benefits of tree planting greatly outweigh (大于) the cost. Our results provide an important evidencebase for clear measures (e.g. planting trees) to increase the lifetime of urban people.”

Sometimes a person who thinks in an unusual way can look at the world from a different point of view. Such was Richard Phillips Feynman, a role model change maker. Born in 1918, he began showing some unusual qualities.
The first sign of Feynman's unique qualities was that he hadn't yet spoken by age three. But young Feynman showed a talent for math and engineering. He enjoyed repairing household objects, and built a simple laboratory in his room. By the time he was in high school, he was experimenting things which were only taught to college students.
After Richard Feynman graduated from high school in 1935, he studied at the MIT. Despite the fact that his grades in science and math were “the best that we've seen”， according to Princeton, he was almost rejected due to his very poor grades in writing and his Jewish religion. Finally, he was accepted and continued to study physics at Princeton where he got his PhD. His lectures attracted many great scientists of the time, including Albert Einstein.
At Princeton, Feynman began his most famous work: his work on nuclear weapons. He moved to a lab and not all of his work there has been released to the public, but we know he performed experiments related to uranium. After the war, Feynman taught at Cornell University, where he continued his studies. He was also awarded the Nobel Prize for his work in particle physics.
Then, in 1987, Feynman developed cancer and died a year later. Though Feynman and his work are honored by physicists across the world, his personal qualities and skills are what really makes him unique. Faced with all the challenges, he never gave up, doing work that he loved until the day he died.

But the cars' makers aren't collegelevel engineers; they're middleschool students attempting to learn about physics and technology. “It's rewriting what's possible in education，” says Vinny Garrison, the teacher who organizes the races.
According to a survey, nearly threefourths of U．S. teachers use technology to encourage students to learn. And that tech is getting smarter: students can now tour ancient worlds to learn history，take quizzes via smartphone and more. Most of the changes are designed to better prepare U．S. students for careers in fastgrowing fields like science and engineering. But they can come at a cost. A $500 million plan to supply Los Angeles students with iPads was recently stopped after students found ways to avoid content filters (过滤器).
So far, however, research shows that using tech in the right ways can make students smarter and more creative. Here is a look at six new technologies that are shaping the classrooms of the future.

A little creativity each day can go a long way towards happiness and pleasure in our daily life.
The researchers followed 658 people for about two weeks and found that doing small, everyday things like cooking and baking made them feel more relaxed and happier. By following diaries kept by the study subjects, the researchers found that besides feeling happier, people who worked on little creative projects every day also felt they were “flourishing”， a term that describes the feeling of personal growth. That could mean that the good feeling that comes with pulling the freshlybaked bread out of the oven could carry over into the next day, making that baker more likely to keep on with little acts of creative cooking.
This isn't the first time researchers have connected making food with good feelings. In recent years, cooking and baking have been explored as a tool to help people deal with things like nervousness and worry. “When I'm in the kitchen, preparing things like sugar or butter I need or breaking the exact number of eggs, I am in control，” said baker John Whaite with mental disorder. “That's really important as a key sign of my illness is a feeling of no control.”
“For people like Whaite baking can help them by providing small tasks to focus on. I've been into volunteer work since childhood. As a girl, I volunteered at animal shelters, played music at nursing homes, and helped with community cleanup. In college, I volunteered heavily at a large yearly conference, which is where I first met and fell in love with my husband Tom, who was on my team of covolunteers. Since getting married in 2013, we've been living in Beirut, Lebanon. My husband works for a nonprofit organization. Another time, some friends and I volunteered to a distant church with only a few elderly residents. The building was old and the churchyard needed attention. We spent the weekend in the home of one of these old ladies so we could clean and repair the church. I'll never forget the new life in her eyes as she stayed with us. She couldn't repair broken doors or pull weeds, but she loved us like nothing else. It breaks my heart to remember this old lady beaming with joy for such small efforts we made. Volunteer work is satisfying not because you have done some work, but because your presence has an effect on people around.
Volunteering makes me a better person because it puts my focus on others. It makes me grateful for what I have and gives me a chance to serve people, which gives a deep sense of meaning to my life.
