Recently, a female tourist died after being bitten (咬) by a snake while walking back to a hotel in Sanya. Similarly, in May, three people in Shenzhen were rushed to hospitals after being bitten by snakes. Snakebites can be scary because they often happen far from the hospital.
In fact, snakes are shy animals and would much prefer to avoid humans, and if there is a chance, they would run away rather than attack (攻击) people. So like other animals, they will protect themselves if they feel scared. Most bites happen when a person accidentally steps on a snake or reaches near one without seeing it.
So it is important to realize that you are able to stay safe through both better understanding of snake habits and knowing snakebite treatments. The guidelines of Shenzhen Emergency Medical Center may help you in the event of a snakebite.
Immediately calling 120 is the most important step. Describe the snake-color, pattern and size. A photo of the snake is helpful for doctors to recognize the species for treatment. Once you’ve called 120, your job is to stay as calm as possible before reaching the hospital-fear speeds up the spread of venom (毒液). You can back away slowly and focus on keeping still, or if possible, you can gently clean the bitten area with clean water while waiting for medical help to slow the spread of venom.

Mental illness is rising among children and teenagers in China. Around 30 million Chinese under 17 have experienced symptoms (症状) of mental illness. These include attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, 多动症), depression (抑郁症) and self-harm, People’s Daily reported.
The global picture isn’t bright, either. According to the World Health Organization, the number of children with mental illnesses climbed by 50 percent by 2020. It will be one of the five leading causes of disability and death in children.
However, only about 20 percent of young people with mental illnesses end up getting proper treatment. This is mainly because people regard mental illness as something to be ashamed of and don’t pay enough attention to the issue, CCTV News noted.
But without timely treatment, children and teenagers may continue to struggle with mental illness when they become adults, according to Liu Huaqing, head of the clinical psychology department (临床心理科) at Beijing Huilongguan Hospital.
Some schools in China are taking action on this issue. In Changsha, several middle schools recently held outdoor activities to improve their students’ mental health. Activities such as “Super Model” and “Amazing Rhythm” helped the students discover their own strengths and boost (增强) their self-confidence, Sanxiang Metropolis Daily reported.
If you find that you or your friends are struggling with mental illness, such as anxiety (焦虑症) or depression, don’t be afraid to tell your parents or teachers about it. They can help you get the professional treatment you need. There is no reason to ever feel ashamed about your mental health. Help is out there.

Dear Tina,
Last summer, I met an accident during a hiking trip with my friends. While climbing a rocky path, my classmate Lingling fell off, hitting her head on a sharp stone. Her head was seriously hurt. She was lying on the ground, unable to move. Remembering the first-aid training from school, my friends and I immediately gave her a first aid.
First, we use a clean cloth to stop the blood. My friend called 120. When the doctors and nurses arrived, they spoke highly of our action.
This experience taught me the importance of staying calm and the first aid training in our school. Basic first-aid skills are necessary and can save lives.

①An emergency is a sudden situation that can harm someone’s health, safety, or property. Knowing how to handle it can make a big difference. The key is to stay calm and act wisely.
②First, don’t panic. If you feel scared or confused, stop and take deep breaths. This helps you think clearly instead of acting out of fear. Staying calm also helps others around you feel less afraid. Tell yourself you can manage the situation. Look around carefully to understand what’s happening before you do anything.
③Next, decide what kind of emergency it is. Is someone hurt, like from a car accident or a fall Or is it something like a fire or a flood that could damage a building For example, if someone is bleeding a lot or can’t breathe, it’s a medical emergency. If it’s a fire or a chemical spill, it might be a danger to everyone nearby. Knowing this helps you choose the right action.
④Then, call for help. In the USA, dial 911. In other places, use the local emergency number. Tell the person on the phone where you are and what’s wrong. Answer their questions clearly—they need information to send the right help fast. Even if you can’t talk much, stay on the line so they can find you.
⑤If it’s safe, help others. If someone is in danger, guide them to a safe place. But it’s too risky, wait for trained people to step in. If someone is hurt and awake, talk to him. Ask their name or tell them help is coming to keep them calm.
⑥Emergencies can change quickly, so keep watching the situation. By staying calm and acting smart, you can help yourself and others stay safe.

Lily had recently been told that she had juvenile arthritis (青少年关节炎) a condition that perhaps made her gradually lose her ability to walk. Doctors warned she might need a wheelchair in the end, but Mark refused to let fear destroy their lives. “I wanted her to see the world through her own eyes, not through limitations,” he later explained.
In April 2023, father and daughter began their 3,000-mile trek, stretching from the large Gobi Desert to the thick tropical forests of Yunan. Not only could she hike 20 miles a day—more than her doctors’ expectations—but her fears of disability had tuned into courage. Through deserts, villages, and storms, they proved that the world is not just seen with eyes but felt with every courageous step.
