When my teenaged son became seriously ill, terrible times for my family began. Our once-happy home became tense and depressed. My husband and I were exhausted under the great stress of caring for my son. It was as if we forgot how to communicate-we couldn’t have a simple conversation without a fighting. Our marriage was on the point of breaking up.
One evening, my son and I were talking about gifts. I recalled my first Valentine’s present from my husband, a kazoo. I was awkward when I received it because I couldn’t get it to make a sound although I am a professional saxophone player. However hard I tried, it just never worked. The kazoo eventually got packed away and forgotten. But my son was interested and insisted on seeing it. After some trouble, I found it.
“You couldn’t get a sound What’s so hard about it ” my husband asked, amazed. He took the kazoo and blew. Nothing happened. Surprised, he tried again. Still there was no sound. Frustrated, he tried again, only to produce a funny sound like an angry bumblebee trapped in the mouth of a bear. We burst into laughter. My son took a turn to play the kazoo. He did no better than us, causing more laughing.
Seeing his face light up, we felt as if the darkness had lifted and a ray of sunshine was let in. It was the best ten minutes of the past couple of years. The mood stayed light for the rest of the evening. It didn’t solve anything. But this experience with the kazoo brought some change in our hearts that always reminds us that there are still things to laugh at and enjoy, and that we can still connect as a family.
24. What affected the relationship of the couple
A. Quarrels between the couple over marriage.
B. Different values they shared towards everything.
C. Stress and chaos arising from their son’s serious illness.
D. Lack of money needed for their son’s medical treatment.
25. Why did the husband blow the kazoo personally
A. He had a love for playing the kazoo.
B. He meant to make his son delighted.
C. He wanted to ease a feeling of depression.
D. He didn’t think it that hard to play the kazoo.
26. What is the turning point of the story
A. My failure to get the kazoo to make a sound.
B. The involvement of my husband in playing the kazoo.
C. My memory about the Valentine’s present from my husband.
D. The failed but funny playing of the kazoo by my husband and son.
27. What does the story mainly tell us
A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Parents are the best teachers.
C. Music can cure the hurt souls. D. Misfortunes test the true love.

Maybe you’re someone who runs 20 to 30 miles a week but regularly gets fast food for dinner. The idea of eating anything you want without consequences might sound like a good dream. But the reality is that exercise cannot completely change the effects of a bad diet, experts say.
“Skinny fat” is the unofficial term used to describe a person who looks slim but has a high percentage of body fat. A regular gym goer could have little subcutaneous fat—the fat right under your skin—but lots of visceral(内脏) fat. A buildup of visceral fat from eating processed food high in sugar and salt could lead to the same type of risks as an overweight person, according to Dr. Colin Carriker, an exercise physiologist from Highpoint University in North Carolina.
If you want to lose weight, the key is to develop a caloric deficit in which you burn calories more than what you’re consuming. But eating high calorie fatty food regularly can make this a hard nut. “You are overconsuming calories and will have to do more exercise than a person can sustain on a long-term basis,” Carriker said.
One idea would be to spend more time exercising or joining in a more intense workout. But this plan doesn’t really work, said Grace Derocha, a registered dietitian, because processed food like so da and candy have few nutrients, and with a lack of vitamins, protein(蛋白质) and fiber to fill you up, it’ll be hard to think about working out when you’re constantly feeling hungry.
Of course, being healthy doesn’t mean you have to give up all the food you enjoy eating. Instead of feeling guilty for ordering dessert, Derocha says you can think of food as more than just calories but as the kind of energy it can provide. If you’ve had enough fiber today, look at where you add in extra protein. “It’s not good or bad food; it’s just fuel,” she said. “When you look at it from an addition standpoint instead of a restriction standpoint, it’s a healthier approach to fueling yourself.”
28. What does Dr. Colin Carriker most probably agree with
A. Gym goers like processed food best.
B. Visceral fat causes less harm to people.
C. People can look thin but still be unhealthy.
D. People exercising regularly are actually fit.
29. Which is closest in meaning to “hard nut” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Disorder. B. Target. C. Trend. D. Challenge.
30. What might happen to people who often eat processed food
A. They have little motivation or drive to exercise.
B. They are enthusiastic about intense workouts.
C. They obtain much more energy to burn calories.
D. They work productively due to being energetic.
31. What does Derocha probably suggest
A. Staying away from junk food. B. Changing your views about food.
C. Being active to keep energetic. D. Fueling yourself with strict diets.
D
How long you live has a lot to do with your environment and lifestyle, but exceptional long life may have even more to do with your genes. For the first time, researchers have discovered a genetic recipe (基因谱) that accurately predicts who live on 100 and beyond.
Analysis shows that 90% of the participants who lived to 100 had at least one of the signature genetic clusters (标志基因组). Thomas Perls at the Boston University School of Medicine said, “We realize this is a complex genetic puzzle. There is a long way for us to try to understand how the combination of these genes with lifestyle factors is playing a role in this long life puzzle.”
Perls has studied many factors that contribute to long life, and he is the first to acknowledge that living longer isn’t likely to be simply a matter of genes. His previous work has shown, for example, that among most elderly people who live into their 70s and 80s, about 70% can owe their long lift to lifestyle factors such as not smoking, eating a healthy, low-fat, low-calorie diet, and remaining socially engaged and mentally active throughout life.
It seems clear that those who live extremely long are benefiting from a special DNA. In fact, Perls believes that the older a person gets, the more likely it is that his or her genes are contributing to those extended years.
32. Perls may most likely agree that___________.
A. living longer just depends on certain genetic recipes
B. lifestyle factors play an important role in long-living
C. most people living extremely long benefit from not smoking
D. being mentally active has nothing to do with living an old age
33. Which of the following is FALSE according to the text
A. Remaining socially engaged helps a person to live long.
B. If you want to live to 100, you must have the right genes.
C. A genetic recipe can predict who may live to 100 and beyond.
D. Perls is the first to think living longer is just a matter of genes.
34. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. The Secret of Long Life B. Lifestyle And Genes
C. Genes decide your lifespan D. Environment And Genes
35. In which section of a newspaper can you most probably find this passage
A. Health & Diet. B. Entertainment & Economics.
C. Medicine & Science. D. Culture & Custom.

Dear Henry,
Learning that you intend to integrate some physical activity into your daily routine, I am writing to recommend “Stand Up and Stretch” exercise.
This simple routine involves standing up from your desk, stretching your arms, legs and back, and taking a few deep breaths. It’s a quick and easy way to get your blood flowing and re-energize your body and mind. This exercise is recommended for several reasons. First, it helps to combat the negative effects of long hours of sitting, such as back pain and numbness. Second, it can improve your focus and concentration, making it easier to stay engaged in class. Lastly, it promotes a healthy and active lifestyle, which is essential for overall well-being.
So, next time you feel less energetic during class, remember to stand up and stretch! It’s a small change that can make a big difference in your day.
Yours,
