Wetlands play an important role in the ecosystem. However, about 35 per cent of the wetlands have been lost in the past 50 years, said the UN. Hoping to protect the wetlands, Cui Luoyao and Lyu Haoyan, two 14-year-old girls from Beijing created a mud skipper(弹涂鱼)amphibious robot(两栖机器人).They won the Gold Award of the 19th Soong Chingling Award for Children's Invention on August 17, 2024.
"Traditional robots faced problems in wetlands," Cui said. As amphibious fish, mudskippers are small and can move freely in wetlands. Inspired(启发)by the little creatures, they added a special chest(胸腔)and tail fin(鳍)to their robot. The fin can help the robot move freely on land and swim underwater. They also learned coding to control(控制)the robot with their phones from far away, up to 300 metres. What's more, they put in different sensors (传感器) to see plants and check water quality.
But things didn't always go well. How to keep the main electronics(电子元件)dry when the robot went underwater was a big problem during testing."The 3-Dprinted parts we used couldn't seal (密封)well," Lyu said. After trying different ways, they found that placing rubber rings in the gaps(缝隙)worked well in stopping water from getting in.
After successfully controlling their robotic mud skipper on land and underwater, they were happy with their success."I feel so proud because our robot can help look into the places that people cannot reach," said Cui.

The air is thin and we have to rest several times on the short hike. On the plain in front of us, we can see the graceful animals. This is why we're here-to watch Xizang’s antelopes(藏羚羊).
Xizang's antelopes live on the plains of Xizang,Xinjiang, and Qinghai. Watching them move slowly across the green grass, I'm crazy about their beauty. I'm also aware of the danger they were in. They were once hunted for their valuable fur.
My guide is Zhaxi, a villager from Changtang. He works at the Changtang National Nature Reserve. The reserve provides cover for the animals and plants of north-western Xizang. "We're not trying to save the animals," he says. "Actually, we're trying to save ourselves."
The 1980s and 1990s were bad times for Xizang's antelopes. The number dropped by more than 50 per cent. Hunters killed antelopes to make money. Their living areas became smaller as new roads and railways were built.
To save this beautiful animal, the Chinese government placed it under national protection. Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes to keep them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains.
The actions were useful. The number of the antelopes started to increase. In June 2015, Xizang's antelope was removed(去除)from the endangered species(濒危物种)list. The government, however, does not plan to stop the protection programmes, since the threats(威胁)have not yet disappeared.
1. Where do Xizang's antelopes live
2. Why did the number of Xizang's antelopes drop in the 1980s and 1990s
3. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about
4. When was Xizang's antelope removed from the endangered species list
5. What can we do to protect endangered wild animals like Xizang's antelopes
