Language points
fewer 和 less 均为比较级形式,分别对应 few 和 little,区别如下:
“fewer ” 修饰可数名词复数。当表示可数事物在数量上比其他事物更少时,就用 fewer。
例如:There are fewer students in this class than in that class. 这个班这个班的学生比那个班的少。
“less” 修饰不可数名词。如要描述不可数的量,如时间、金钱、水等,比另一个量更小时,用 less。固定短语有“more or less”(或多或少)等。
例如:I have less money than you. 我的钱比你的少。
The project is more or less finished.
这个项目或多或少已经完成了。
“fewer ” 更强调数量的具体减少,是在明确的可数个体数量上进行比较,给人一种更具体、更清晰的数量概念。
例如:We should buy fewer bottles of water to reduce waste.
我们应该少买几瓶水以减少浪费。
“less” 更侧重于表示一种程度上的减少或弱化,在修饰不可数名词时,往往给人一种整体量的减少或程度降低的感觉,比较抽象。
例如:We need less noise in the classroom.
