A heart attack led Ivan Markov to take up gardening on a small patch (小块土地) in front of his council flat. Now, he's spreading his love of nature across south London.
Markov grew up on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea, and learned to love nature in these tropical zones. In 2007, he moved to Lewisham, south-east London, to work as a teacher. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with heart failure in 2010.
During the treatment and recovery, he read about a local award for best garden, and though he only had a front garden outside his flat, he thought the competition would be something to work towards. He worked on his patch for most of the year, planting seeds and plants, such as flowers, berries and herbs. Surprisingly, he won the best front garden prize. “I couldn't believe it,” he said. “I nearly fell off my seat.”
That was the start. Markov created a community nursery (苗圃) at the side of his house, and started planting bushes across the road. “I had so much beauty in my garden,” he says. “I wanted to share what I had.” He started offering guidance to others. News of Markov's green-fingered selflessness began to spread. “I go to someone's property and give them advice on how to plant a garden,” he says. He delivers cuttings and seeds and helps people report plants, but everything he does is free. To date, Markov has helped six neighbourhoods embrace sustainable gardening.
He wants to show people you don't have to live in the country to create beauty. “It doesn't matter how much space you have. Outside my place there's a tiny square, tiny. I grow tomatoes there for my supper. The opportunities are endless.”
Gardening gives Markov “the feeling of creating something from nothing and so much pleasure”. His dream is to create more green areas. Markov is making this corner of south-east London a paradise for all.

Are you interested in food, United States history, and the English language If so, American cookbooks provide wide information in all three subjects. The first, published in 1796, started a market that continues in the 21st century with online publications of such works. And, the literature offers more than just recipes (食谱).
Amy Bentley is a food historian at New York University. She said that cookbooks from the 1800s were used as a lifestyle and household guides. They included food recipes, but they were not central to the books back then. “So, there're some recipes for food, but it could be recipes for a cleaning solvent (溶剂) or what to do when your child has been poisoned and how to clean,” Bentley said.
American Cookery by Amelia Simmons is the first cookbook published in the United States. Simmons wrote that her goal with the book was to improve the new generation of women in the US. And after the Civil War, cookbooks became more manifold. Writers started exploring local foods and customs in their work.
Some communities would put together a group cookbook to raise money. These cookbooks provide a look into what the American middle class was eating throughout the years. Such works serve as a record of the traditions and interests of different neighbourhoods and groups.
Throughout the years cookbooks have signified humanity's growth in knowledge, trends (趋势) and inventions. During the last part of the 19th century, for example, many recipes were informed by the dangers of food containing bacteria (细菌). Then, in the 1930s, refrigerators (冰箱) became common objects in American homes. But cookbooks are not complete reflections of American life. Publishing companies mostly control cookbook content. And, their main goal is to make money from book sales.
In the 21st century, with the growth of social media and food websites, publishing companies have less control. These new ways to share recipes have led to more open discussions about food and cooking. This gives the public more choices and power.

Over the years, many scientists have attempted to explain why spending time in green spaces can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, from their supposed ability to clean the air to their mysterious effects on our brains.
The most common saying I tend to hear is that plants, particularly houseplants, clean the air. The latest research now suggests that in indoor spaces you would need a lot of them before you see any noticeable benefit. How many Well, several hundred per square meter of living space to achieve the same benefit of simply opening a window.
What we do know, however, is that there is something unusual about the color green that seems to affect how our brains function. Researchers investigating the effect of exercise on psychological well-being have found that seeing views of the natural world on screens had additional benefits over and above the workout alone. However, when they changed the screens to show the same views in black and white or in shades of red, the effect was markedly reduced compared to the original green. This may mean that having evergreen species in your garden or even something as simple as painting your fence green might contribute to its effect.
Similarly, designing your garden to require higher maintenance (维护) so that it is not simply somewhere to sunbathe in summer may improve the beneficial effect by encouraging gentle workouts. Low-impact, prolonged exercise, such as gardening, can burn more calories (卡路里) than a hard-hitting gym session, despite feeling easier. It is a way of being active that may appeal to far more people.
Gardening is also a classic form of practicing mindfulness, which can help to focus our thoughts on the here and now, distracting us from any worries or stresses. Mindfulness exercises are well-documented to have a positive impact on psychological well-being. So act now, embrace (接受) the power of greenery and turn your garden into a welcoming space.

Sichuan dish and Hunan dish are both known for their hot flavors, which might appear similar 56. first sight. That's why Americans are pretty confused about how they are different.
This 57. (confuse) results from how Hunan food 58. (introduce) to the American public. According to Kian Lam Kho, the author of Chinese food blog Red Cook, a group of Chinese chefs are said to have been trained in both Hunan and Sichuan dishes in 1945. When they later 59. (seek) opportunities in the United States, they brought Hunan and Sichuan dishes to New York, 60. these two cooking styles were adapted to suit local tastes.
61. Kho puts it, these two dishes offer different flavors. Sichuan dish is characterized by the use of Sichuan peppercorns, which provide 62. unique numbing (麻木的) feeling. Hunan dish, on the other hand, is famous for its bold and burning flavors, 63. (feature) the mixture of fresh chilies (辣椒) and garlic (大蒜) to create a powerful spicy taste. Unlike Sichuan dish, Hunan dish does not typically include the numbing feeling of Sichuan peppercorns.
“It is amazing how different Hunan cooking is, 64. (compare) to its confusing Sichuan cousin. It is 65. (true) worthwhile to seek out restaurants or cookbooks that faithfully recreate Hunan flavors in their menus.” Kho notes.

Wolf! Hank thought. The boy stared out of the cabin (小木屋) window at the animal. It was sitting a stone's throw away in the moonlight. The wolf howling (嚎叫), Hank shook slightly. For the first time, he felt truly alone in the mountains.
It had felt good to be allowed to come along with Dad. Dad was a scientist who studied wild animals. Two days ago, they had moved into an empty cabin. Here, Dad would write a report about what he had found. But they discovered that dozens and dozens of mice had taken over the cabin. The little creatures had gotten into the supplies of dried food and ruined almost everything.
Now, because most of the food was gone, Dad had left to get new supplies from town and would be staying overnight. Hank had insisted on staying behind.
The wolf howl sounding again, Hank opened the logbook to write about it, but his hand shook. Dad had never mentioned having any trouble with wolves. Hank closed the logbook and put it on the table. Quickly he looked around for something he could use as a weapon just in case. He grabbed a stick from the fireplace, went to the door, and took a deep breath.
Then he opened the door, waved the stick, and shouted with all his might (强大力量): “Go away, wolf. Go away!” Shocked, the wolf sprang
(跳跃) and started running away. Hank closed the door, his heart pounding hard. When he'd caught his breath, he turned back to the window. Oh, no! There was the wolf sitting right where it had sat before.
Hank stared at the wolf. The wolf stared right back at him. Hank was staring into the eyes of a hunter. He knew, like all creatures, the wolf needed to eat. Hank's dad had said wolves play their part in the environment by eating deer, rabbits, and other animals. But maybe, like the hungry mice that were running about Hank's feet, wolves go for any food they can find. Suddenly, Hank heard a squeaky (吱吱叫的) noise!
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Holding his breath, Hank raised his head to see. He found the wolf, howling wildly, was chasing some mice in the moonlight. Letting out squeaky noises, the mice ran about on the grass aimlessly. Suddenly the hungry wolf sprang up, catching a mouse. Sitting a stone's throw away, it ate the mouse it captured. Running about its feet were dozens of noisy mice. The wolf rose, ready to catch another mouse. Shocked, Hank turned back to the table for his logbook.
As the wolf sprang up and tried to catch another mouse, Hank opened the logbook again. His heart pounded hard. Grabbing the pen, Hank quickly wrote what was happening outside the cabin. Another mouse caught, the wolf swallowed it whole. The hunting over, the wolf ran away with its stomach filled. Closing the logbook, Hank took a deep breath, feeling so good. It was the first time that he had stayed alone in the mountains to study wild animals. That night he stayed awake, eager to report what he discovered to his dad.(共89张PPT)

[2024·江西省高一下学期期末]Under a nearly full moon in the darkness of the night sky over Kansas, a group of student star watchers sat in a circle taking turns on the telescope. They seem very happy, very cheerful, and excited to experience new things.
It was a bonding experience that was out of this world, especially considering that only a day before they were as foreign to each other as the moon landscape itself.
This past summer more than 300 high school graduates signed up for the unique student exchange program. Unlike the well-known foreign exchange model that affords students a chance to study abroad, this program gives students the opportunity to soak in a brand-new culture without ever leaving the country.
It's called the American Exchange Project, or AEP for short, co-founded by 29-year-old Franely McCullough, grandson of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough. “We fund kids to spend a week in the summer after senior year in an American town that is socio-economically and culturally different from the one that they're growing up in.” McCullough said.
For the past three years McCullough's been giving high school graduates that same experience, and so far at least, it's having the impact he hoped it would. A week may not seem like a lot of time, but at the end of those seven days, you can see the kids have been bonded so much. One girl from South Dakota said, “I've never been a part of a community where I'm not the minority. So, this is very much an experience that I really appreciate so much.”
McCullough hopes to offer the program to a million students by decade's end, and all free of charge, thanks to big name donors, including the likes of Steven Spielberg. “I think this all ought to be as typical to the American high school experience as the graduating party,” McCullough said. “I think every kid in every town should have an experience like this.”

1.What do the words “out of this world” mean in Paragraph 2?( )
A.Wonderful. B.Confusing.
C.Challenging. D.Meaningless.
答案:A
根据第一段“Under a nearly full moon in the darkness of the night sky over Kansas, a group of student star watchers sat in a circle taking turns on the telescope. They seem very happy, very cheerful, and excited to experience new things.”和画线词后文“especially considering that only a day before they were as foreign to each other as the moon landscape itself”可推断,这是一种不同寻常的亲密体验。所以画线部分out of this world意思为“非常好的”,与wonderful意思一致。故选A。
2.What can we learn about the AEP project?( )
A.It's a summer camp for senior students.
B.It's a free week-long trip in a new town.
C.It's in honour of a late famous historian.

根据第四段中“‘We fund kids to spend a week in the summer after senior year in an American town that is socio-economically and culturally different from the one that they're growing up in.’ McCullough said.”
3.Why does the author mention South Dakota in Paragraph 5?( )
A.To show the impact of the project.
B.To explain the origin of the project.
C.To predict the future of the project.
D.To invite more kids to join the project.
答案:A
故选A。
4.What is the best title of the text?( )
A.Students Exploring the Universe by the Telescope
B.A New American Town Being Open to the Students
C.The Big Names Donating Fund to the Students' Growth
D.Students Building Bridges Across the American Divide

[2024·山东德州高一下学期期中]A heart attack led Ivan Markov to take up gardening on a small patch (小块土地) in front of his council flat.
“I couldn't believe it,” he says. “I nearly fell off my seat.”
That was the start. Markov created a community nursery (苗圃) at the side of his house, and started planting bushes across the road. “I had so much beauty in my garden,” he says. “I wanted to share what I had.” He started offering guide to others.

[2024·河北廊坊高一下期末]Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin began to declare very strange plans every April Fool's Day not long after starting their company more than a quarter century ago. One year, they posted a job opening for a Copernicus research center on the moon. Usually, their ideas were so absurd that people learned to laugh them off as another example of joke. That's how their plan about Gmail was received when it was made public 20 years ago on April Fool's Day.
They said it would be a free email service that would store about 13,500 emails each account before running out of space, while the other webmail services run by Yahoo and Microsoft could store just 30 to 60 emails. Besides the storage, they declared, Gmail would be equipped with Google's search technology so users could quickly find an old email, photo or other personal information stored on the service. It would also automatically string together all of the communications about the same topic so they could be read as if it was a single conversation.
It was such a surprising concept that shortly after The Associated Press published a story about Gmail late on the afternoon of April Fool's Day in 2004, readers began calling and emailing to inform the news agency that it had been fooled by the Google founders.
But The AP knew Google wasn't joking about Gmail because an AP reporter had been invited to the company to see what they were working on. In his office, Page, then just 31 years old, showed the reporter how nicely Gmail operated. “I think people are really going to like this,” Page predicted.
As with so many other things, Page was right. Gmail now has more than 1.8 billion active accounts and has become the first building block in Google's internet empire beyond its search engine. After Gmail came Google Maps and Google Docs with word processing applications. Then came the video site YouTube, followed by the introduction of the Android operating system that powers most of the world's smartphones.
“That is part of the fun, making a product that people won't believe is real,”said Marissa Mayer who helped to design Gmail.

A.Creative. B.Strange. C.Popular. D.Practical.
根据画线词后面的“people learned to laugh them off as another example of joke”可知,人们把这些想法当作笑话一笑了之,再结合第一段第一句“Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin began to declare very strange plans every April Fool's Day not long after starting their company more than a quarter century ago.”

根据第四段“But The AP knew Google wasn't joking about Gmail because an AP reporter had been invited to the company to see what they were working on. In his office, Page, then just 31 years old, showed the reporter how nicely Gmail operated. ‘I think people are really going to like this,’ Page predicted.”
4.Which application came out first?( )
A.Gmail. B.Google Maps.
C.Google search. D.Google Docs.
根据第二段中的“Besides the storage, they declared, Gmail would be equipped with Google's search technology so users could quickly find an old email, photo or other personal information stored on the service.”和第五段中的“After Gmail came Google Maps and Google Docs with word processing applications.”

[2024·广州高一检测]Two women in their 50s stand beholding in front of Guanyin of the South China Sea, an ancient Chinese sculpture in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Over the past 20 years, they have been visiting the museum, describing the “Mother Buddha” as “beautiful and tranquil, a symbol of religious traditions in China”. Measuring 2.4 meters high, 1.68 meters wide and 1.1 meters thick, the larger-than-life sculpture was carved from the trunk of a single poplar tree, which has created a sense of calm and warmth in the hall.
Since its launch in 1933, the museum has been actively collecting, preserving, studying and exhibiting works of Chinese art, ranging from ceramics to furniture, and from paintings to sculptures. And its Chinese art collection contains masterpieces in various historical stages.
An exhibition on the theme of Lively Creatures—Animals in Chinese Art was held at the museum, displaying tens of Chinese ancient paintings with images of animals in many art forms. The creatures on the paintings represented celebration, personal messages, and even political and religious agendas.
Organizers of the exhibition produced a set of cards, with images of animals on one side and their cultural meanings in Chinese artistic tradition on the other. The cards are provided for visitors for free.
“I find it very interesting, and the way that the things are drawn is very cool,” says 17-year-old high school student Camden Lombard after visiting the exhibition. “I want to go to China someday to find more,” he adds.
“It's kind of eye-opening and we're bringing the world together,” says Makar, an educator with the school outreach and education programs of the museum. “There are so many similarities as well as beautiful differences, and we are just trying to understand and appreciate one another.”
“We're in a moment when it's sometimes hard to look outside of your own personal viewpoints,” says Howard, manager of volunteer engagement at the museum.
“I think having access to seeing what other cultures have created, what they valued and appreciated, and what was important to them, is really important in building that understanding about all the people we share this planet with.”

(It) Looks like rain now.
(You) Be sure not to make any noise.(你)一定不要制造出任何噪声。
He has a knowledge of first aid but his friend doesn't (have a knowledge of first aid).
She washed (the shirt), ironed (the shirt), and folded the shirt.
①(You come) This way, please.
②(Have you) Got any ink

⑦You have a seat, please!

⑨I like red wine better than white wine.

The way (in which/that) he speaks to us is really annoying.

[2024·辽宁省重点中学协作校]After reflecting on the past few years of my transition to the triathlon (铁人三项), I am most proud of the gains I have made in swimming. Actually, this is my weakest one of the three, but I have worked at it, stuck with it and am motivated by small successes.
My heart still jumps when I remember that night six months ago when I swam 2,100m for the first time. I was planning to swim 1,800m and could not believe my eyes when I saw 2,100m on my watch. At that point, I realized that I had the endurance, and speed needed to become my focus.
Last year, after participating in my first triathlon, I increased my time in the pool to 4 or 5 times a week. I swam once a week in a master swim club. Impressed by the power and speed of other swimmers around me, I found my spot in Lane 1, the slow lane, to work on different strokes (游泳姿势) and speed. This was great because I became more comfortable with pool toys, worked different muscle groups other than those used in freestyle, and I realized that I was not always slow.
There is nothing better than a bit of individual attention to help improve. During the summer, I had 4 classes with a swim coach to work on my technique as we both knew that I had to improve that before I could get faster in the water. We changed my catch, corrected my pull and strengthened my kick.
The combination of these has made a huge difference in how I swim. There is still quite a bit of work ahead of me. I have no doubt that I will continue to grow as a swimmer. With goals being set and new dreams to chase (追逐), pool time is about to get a lot more interesting.

Before you start freshening up your space, take a look around to see what you have that you could give away to someone who could use it. Ask an adult for two bags or boxes, one for items you want to donate and one for anything that can go directly in the trash.2( ).
Think about light
One simple room update that has a big impact is turning up your lighting. One idea is to hang inexpensive LED string lights on a wall. 3( ). Moving other lighting devices from another part of the house to your room, with permission from an adult, can also add soft lighting to your space.
4( )
Another inexpensive change that can have big results is paint. Ask an adult if they're willing to help you paint an accent wall in your room. An accent wall is a good chance to take a risk with color since it's only one wall. You can choose to paint the wall behind your headboard or even a closet door. If you don't want to paint, you could check out wallpaper whose colors matches your room.
Add personal touches
5( ). You can ask a parent for any spare picture frames (框架) or pick some up together at a thrift shop or craft store. Print out photos and frame them for display. You could also frame your own artwork to hang on a wall or lean it against a dresser.
