In the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Jingxi embroidered balls (绣球) — once symbols of love and good fortune — are now telling a new tale of cultural revival (复兴) and economic benefits. With their delicate patterns and brilliant colors, these handcrafted treasures were once at risk of disappearance.
Wang Xiufen, captured by their beauty, saw an opportunity to preserve tradition while transforming lives. Despite being unfamiliar with the craft, she refined her techniques through painstaking self-study and hands-on practice. At China’s “Golden Phoenix” innovative product design competition, her embroidered balls won two gold and two silver awards, earning her national recognition.
Recognizing their cultural significance of Jingxi embroidered balls, China entitled them as national intangible cultural heritage in 2006. “Yet, despite the remarkable craftsmanship of local craftsmen, many struggled to find a market for their work,” Wang said. Determined to bridge this gap, Wang launched an online store in 2010, introducing Jingxi embroidered balls to a wider audience.
As demand grew, she founded China’s first company dedicated exclusively to Jingxi embroidery in 2013, focusing on innovation, production, and scales. To boost efficiency, she introduced modern machinery, automating six production steps while preserving the delicate embroidery and assembly (组装) work for skilled craftsmen. To expand the craft’s reach, Wang has organized over 2,000 free training sessions, forming a core team of 20 expert craftsmen who now support more than 700 women in embroidered ball production. By incorporating elements favored by young people and customizing designs to suit diverse preferences, the craft has gained worldwide recognition. According to Wang, her company exported embroidered balls to the United States, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Republic of Korea in 2023, generating over 10 million yuan in sales and securing 70 percent of Guangxi’s market share.
Looking ahead, Wang remains resolute in her mission. “I hope the embroidered ball industry continues to grow. That has always been my ultimate goal.”
24. How did Wang Xiufen initially gain recognition for her work
A. By selling her products online. B. By opening a large-scale exhibition.

25. What is the correct time order of the following events involving Wang Xiufen
a. She set up China’s first company devoted to Jingxi embroidery.

Travellers have long feared being swallowed into the peatlands (泥炭地): “If his foot slips ... it is possible he may never more be heard of,” described William Gilpin in 1772.
But now the image of this ecosystem finally turns a corner. UNESCO has recognized the Flow Country as a world heritage (遗产) site-the first peatland to make the list-due to its natural characteristics: the remarkable variety of plants and animals that live there. It’s also recognized that these peatlands are not humankind’s enemy but an important partner in the fight against climate crisis. Peat has formed in the Flow Country for 8,000 years, trapping carbon. It’s vital this carbon stays to avoid further global heating.
The Flow Country was chosen for its natural heritage not cultural significance, which comes as a welcome contrast to the vast majority of the UK’s other world heritage sites. Prioritising culture might make sense for places like Stonehenge or Durham Cathedral, but the Lake District Not so much. The Lake District National Park is remarkable for its natural geography: deep valleys, uneven peaks and icy lakes. People have long shaped the area, but their impact is just a thin layer on a remarkably splendid landscape. Yet, when the park gained world heritage status in 2017, it was largely upon the basis of its relatively recent tradition of sheep farming. The decision reflected how the English perceive the natural world.
But the recognition of the Flow Country looks even more profound. It represents a change not only in our perception of peatlands but of nature itself. Unlike the Lake District, it prioritises not sheep, but moss (苔藓). This approach aligns with the growing movement to recognise the rights of nature: to reframe the natural world as something more than a collection of raw materials.
None of that is to ignore humans’ role in the Flow Country but we should recognize that no landscape in the UK can be considered in isolation from its culture, while also remembering that the human story never unfolds alone.
28. Why does the author quote William Gilpin in paragraph 1
A. To illustrate the author’s point.
B. To give a scientific explanation.
C. To provide historical background.
D. To present a common partial view.
29. For what was the Flow Country recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site
A. Climate benefit and natural value.
B. Beautiful scenery and conservation efforts.
C. Geographical uniqueness and rare species.
D Educational significance and cultural value.
30. What does the underlined phrase “aligns with” in paragraph 4 mean
A. addresses. B. matches. C. Challenges. D. Outweighs.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. The formation of the Flow Country.
B. The recognition of the Lake District.
C. The long-overdue respect for peatlands.
D. The conservation difficulties of peatlands.
D
Do you usually spot the touchscreen first when checking out a new car For years, almost every new car sold has a high-tech screen that controls everything. Even safety features like automatic lane-keeping are sometimes screen-controlled. But is it really safe
If scrolling down the screen of a smartphone while driving is distracting and then doing likewise with your car’s is probably risky too. Drivers know the location of physical controls and press buttons without taking their eyes off the road. A touchscreen offers no physical feedback, making the operation much harder. And because screens have to do so many things, it often takes a few steps through several sub-menus to find the right setting.
In 2022, Vi Bilagare, a Swedish motoring magazine, measured how long it took drivers to do things like changing the temperature while driving at 110 kilometers per hour. It compared 11 cars with touchscreens to a single older model with real buttons. In the old cars, drivers were able to do all their tasks within about 10 seconds, while the worst-performing modern car took 45 seconds. Even in the best-performing modern cars, testers still took several seconds longer than in the old car.
Another study, done in 2024 by researchers in Norway, used tracking cameras to compare how long drivers were distracted while performing different tasks on a touchscreen. Even the quickest job like changing the temperature meant three and a half seconds, on average, of not looking at the road.
New rules from Euro NCAP, an organization that provides safety ratings for cars sold in Europe, will give no car a full five-star score unless certain crucial functions are controlled by real switches. Euro NCAP’s safety guidelines have no legal force, but carmakers use its ratings as a selling point.
Traditional carmakers have begun restoring some buttons to their new models. But innovation never stops. Even as touchscreens are falling out of favour, many manufacturers are turning their attention to voice control — though that is a subject for another story.
32. What is an advantage of physical buttons over touchscreens
A. They are cheaper to produce and replace.
B. They are easier to see in bright sunlight.
C. They can be operated without looking at them.
D. They allow control of a wider range of functions.
33. Which took the longest time in the 2022 study
A. The model running at 110 km/h. B. The old model with real buttons.
C. The best-performing modern car. D. The worst-performing modern car.
34. How does the author prove his argument in the passage
A. By showing different research results. B. By telling his own driving experience.
C. By comparing the actions of car drivers. D. By mentioning the rules of an organization.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Safety features will be smarter. B. Touchscreens will be abandoned.
C. Voice control will dominate the market. D. In-car control will innovate continually.

The Martins adopted their pet dog Saladin ten years ago. A year later their daughter Lucie was born. Lucie grew up playing with Saladin. But as time went by, Saladin developed arthritis (关节炎). The family sent Saladi n to Dr. Adams. They paid for the best treatment. But Saladin’s arthritis was so bad that Dr. Adams failed to save him. Lucie was of course in total sadness.
Dr. Adams knew the family love animals. So when he found a homeless dog, he sent it to them. They were so delighted to have this hairy brown dog and named it Lollipop. As for this new dog, the family loved it even more than Saladin. Every day Lollipop would sit at the gate waiting for Lucie to come back from school. When Lucie opened the door, he would jump around and Lucie would pick him up and hug it happily.
After supper, the family would walk Lollipop to the grassland near their house. Mrs. Martin was always very careful to take a plastic bag to collect the waste Lollipop made. She never had Lollipop making mess to the surroundings.
Mr Horace had just been promoted to management officer of the community. He worked so hard to make the community a better place. He made strict rules including rules about pets. Sometimes he had unpleasant arguments with awkward people. But the Martins always followed the rules very well.
Unluckily, while walking on the pavement (人行道) one day, somehow Lollipop made more waste than usual, obviously something was wrong with his health. But before the family could clean all the mess, the staff of the community showed up.

W: Maybe, but not right away, because we’ll give the items a good clean first. Then we’ll recheck their age and take detailed records in the lab. 【原文】Hello everyone, I’m Lina from the Youth Scientist Summer Camp. We are a youth development organization that introduces young people like you to the world of science. We carefully select our participants. Instead of looking at academic grades, we focus more on students’ passion for science.
To join the camp, all you need to do is submit a short essay about your favorite project, together with a teacher’s recommendation letter. During the camp, you will work with college professors on small research projects, make friends with students from other schools, and even receive a certificate that will be helpful for your college applications. All of our leaders are former participants themselves, which means they truly understand what you need. They are patient, enthusiastic, and always ready to support you whenever you face difficulties.
So what do past participants think about the camp Well, over 90% of them said it was the best summer experience they had. One student even told me that the camp helped her confirm her dream of studying engineering. If you’ve got the passion to become a young scientist, come and discover what we have to offer.
