You can describe a character’s emotions from three aspects.
Mental
responses

sensations

What a character is feeling inside.
What other people can see.
What a character is thinking.
Example:
I was nervous

My heart was beating quickly (internal sensations) with my legs trembling/ my palms sweating (physical signal) . I wondered if the audience would like me (mental responses).
