杨振宁1922年10月1日出生于安徽合肥（现肥西县）的一个知识分子家庭，父亲杨武之是中国首位数论博士、清华大学数学系教授。受父亲影响，他自幼展现出极高的数学天赋：4岁由母亲教认字，一年多学会3000字；5岁进私塾，6岁随父亲赴厦门大学读小学二年级；1929年父亲任教清华大学，举家迁往北平，入读清华园西院十一号的教员子弟小学。1937年抗日战争爆发，杨振宁随家人辗转至昆明，1938年以高二学历考入西南联合大学（由清华、北大、南开合并而成）。1942年，他以优异成绩毕业于西南联大物理系，随后进入清华大学研究院攻读硕士学位，师从王竹溪，研究统计力学，1944年获硕士学位。
物理学有“三皇”。如果说麦克斯韦是电磁之皇，爱因斯坦是时空之皇，那么杨振宁则是粒子之皇。他凭借杨-米尔斯方程，统一了电磁力、弱相互作用力和强相互作用力。从此，微观世界实现了大一统。
1949年，杨振宁进入普林斯顿高等研究所（IAS）工作，开启了他学术生涯的黄金时代。在IAS的17年里（1949-1966），他与罗伯特·奥本海默（J. Robert Oppenheimer）、阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦（Albert Einstein）等科学巨匠共事，专注于粒子物理、统计力学等领域的研究。
当年，杨振宁在导师费米的推荐下，成为艾里逊教授的研究生。艾里逊教授正准备建造一台40万电子伏特的加速器，这在当时是最先进的设备，吸引了全球科学界的目光。然而，尽管杨振宁有机会接触到这样的先进设备，但由于当时国内经济条件的限制，他缺乏实验动手的机会，这成为他事业发展中的一大短板。
但杨振宁并未因此气馁，他决心要迎头赶上，做出一篇纯粹实验的物理学论文。于是，他一头扎进了实验室，开始了艰苦的科研生涯。然而，由于动手能力不足，他的实验经常发生爆炸，甚至一度被戏称为“爆炸专家”。
1957 年，诺贝尔奖委员会表彰了杨振宁及其同事李政道 —— 二人皆为出生于中国、后加入美国国籍的科学家 —— 以表彰他们的这一发现。杨振宁是第一个获得诺贝尔奖的华人科学家。
杨振宁于 1964 年加入美国国籍，以推进自己的研究工作。他称这是一个后来感到后悔的 “痛苦” 决定 —— 尤其是因为他的父亲始终没有原谅他，即便在临终之际也是如此。
杨振宁是 1971 年首位访华的知名美籍华裔学者。1979 年邓小平访美时，杨振宁在美籍华人欢迎晚宴上发表了讲话。
2003年回归中国后，杨振宁定居清华大学“归根居”，过着简单而充实的生活：每天坚持阅读物理论文、指导学生、参加学术活动，偶尔与家人散步。2017年，他放弃美国国籍，正式转为中国科学院院士，实现了“做一个中国公民”的心愿。
2021年，杨振宁迎来百岁华诞，他在“杨振宁先生学术思想研讨会”上发表“但愿人长久，千里共同途”的讲话，表达了对祖国的深情与对青年学者的期望。2025年3月，他出席清华举办的“杨-米尔斯70周年”国际会议并致辞，这也是他最后一次公开亮相。2025年10月18日，杨振宁先生因病在北京逝世。
