One of the best ways to improve our communities is through volunteer work. According to a report from United
Nations Volunteers, it is estimated that 140 million people volunteer in every nation and in a variety of settings.
Forbes reports that research has shown that volunteering can greatly benefit volunteers. These benefits include an
increased sense of productivity, the development of new skills, resume-building experience, improved physical health,
and the emotional rewards that come with others appreciating you and your efforts. Here are some types for you to
join in local communities.
Sports volunteering
You don’t need to be good at the sport in which you wish to volunteer. Some of the most important characteristics
include enthusiasm and interest. Your sports organisation should put you through any qualifications that you need to
carry out your role. Most people volunteer on average two or three hours a week, but there are also opportunities to
volunteer more or less often.
Support the Red Cross
Red Cross is an organization that helps with disaster relief, blood donations, and more. Being a Red Cross
volunteer provides experience in the medical field and allows you to help those in need. The Red Cross responds to
disasters nationwide and helps communities recover. It may be difficult to see damaged communities, but you could
have a part in assisting them to recover. In addition, you may meet new friends along the way.
Organize a Summer Reading Program
Summer reading programs are one way to keep children’s reading skills active and their mind fresh during the
whole summer vacation. Organizing a summer reading program is an excellent way to get kids to read a book, broaden
their vocabulary, and learn something new. You can share your favorite books, offer prizes to children who meet their

Evenings With Dad
Some of my earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from
the office. I’d watch as he put his personal items away: his watch, wallet, comb and car keys would always occupy
the same spot on the table every time.
Dad’s comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum. Every night, he would smile, hand me
the comb and say: “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK ”
I was more than happy to do it. At age five, this kind of task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap
on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly
return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me, and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school.
That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky.
He didn’t come home as much as he used to. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in
bed. I started to get mad. Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job Why take the risk and place the
whole family in trouble Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to
check on him.
Now 28, I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started to get back on track. Yet the
uncomfortable silence between Dad and me went on.
Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his
study. When I turned to leave, he asked me to clean his comb. I looked at him for a while, then took the comb and
headed to the sink.
It was a new comb. This one was brown. I hadn’t noticed that he’d changed it. After cleaning it, I passed it back
to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad had aged. He had wrinkles
next to his eyes when he smiled, yet his smile was still as heartwarming as before.
24. How did the author feel about her earliest memories with her Dad
A. Moved. B. Challenging C. Cheerful. D. Tired.

D. he wanted to protect his life from getting shaky
26. The author shared her story with her Dad because _______.
A. she intended to remember their happy time

We’ve all felt the tap to the soul you get from driving by your old high school or hearing a tune you once danced
to. But why is that feeling so universal
Nostalgia, a combination of the Greek words nostos (homecoming) and algos (pain), was a special type of
homesickness associated with soldiers fighting far-off wars. Seventeenth-century physicians worried such thoughts
put health at risk. In the 19th century, doctors believed it could cause irregular heartbeat, fever, and death.
Our understanding of nostalgia has developed since then. “It’s a very mixed emotion,” says Frederick Barrett, a
neuroscientist. That makes it hard to fit into existing theory, which typically categorizes emotions as either positive
or negative. And triggers—the cars, music or smells—are extremely personal. Therefore, designing a standardized
study is difficult.
But we do know nostalgia has a marked effect on us: brain imaging studies show that those experiences have
their own neural signature. Neuroscientists argued that the emotion is co-produced by the brain’s recall and reward
systems. They found that nostalgic images use the memory-managing hippocampus(海马区) more than other sights,
as people mine autobiographical(个人经历的) details deep in the past. This mental effort pays off: as the
hippocampus activates, so does one of the brain’s reward centers.
That longing for the past might be a protective mechanism, says Tim Wildschut, a professor. His work also
suggests a more primitive purpose for the feeling: it developed to remind our ancient ancestors of pleasant physical
feelings during periods of discomfort and pain.
Recent research suggests the occasional look backwards can give us a boost in unnoticeable ways: by increasing
self-respect and protecting against depression. Nostalgia’s apparent power to jump-start one’s memory also seems to
improve recall ability in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
New flavors of “reminiscence therapy”(回忆疗法) are emerging around the world. In 2018, the George G.
Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers opened its first Town Square, an adult daycare facility designed to look like a
small town in 1950s America. Though Town Square has yet to publish peer-reviewed data on the success of the
program, clients say it has helped seniors access dusty memories and reconnect with loved ones.
Scientists need a lot more information to adequately characterize this complex and bittersweet feeling. But while
centuries of doctors considered nostalgia a deadly disease, we now know: it can help us make it through today.
27. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. What nostalgia means. B. Why nostalgia matters.
C. How nostalgia works. D. When nostalgia emerges.
28. How might nostalgia benefit people
A. It helps us face unpleasant situations. B. It gives seniors a sense of security.
C. It makes people’s mind sharp. D. It improves people’s instant memory.

29. Why does the author mention Town Square
A. To reveal a phenomenon of emotion.
B. To demonstrate the use of a research
C. To explore the advantage of a treatment.
D. To interpret the concept of a therapy finding.

The start-up that attracted the largest investment in the history of cybersecurity, of more than half a billion
dollars, has a simple goal: a passwordless future.
Despite the spread of password management software that can generate and remember complicated strings of
random characters, some of the most common passwords are still “12345”, “password” and “iloveyou”. As a result,
more than 80 percent of hacks involve these kinds of passwords; and passwords remain the most sought-after data
by hackers, above other personal or sensitive information.
In many cases, individuals are tricked into handing over password details by phishing emails and other social
engineering techniques. Hackers have sought to break into apps and steal entire password databases as well.
Passwords are also under attack from new technology, such as automated programs that can rapidly try to guess
them, or can try stolen passwords on multiple online accounts.
Since the need to replace the easily forgotten and highly hackable strings of letters and numbers that we use to
access everyday life has become even more urgent, the race to replace the password is under way, with biometric-
based (基于生物识别的) security emerging as one of the most sought-after solutions. According to Tieo, a union of
more than 250 companies, which promotes a standard system of passwordless authentication (身份验证), the vast
majority of consumer services will offer passwordless login systems in the next couple of years. “If done correctly
and safely, biometrics are really helping us move to a passwordless future in a rapid manner,” said Andrew
Jenkinson, CEO of Tieo.
But there are still risks associated with the use of biometric authentication. Unlike passwords, biometrics cannot
be changed. This means such data must be closely guarded for privacy purposes and to prevent spoofing—hackers
trying to trick cameras or sensors with photos, or masks of their victim. “Biometric authentication and passwordless
authentication has its own attack surface,” said Paul Smith, director of security research at CyberPek. His team
revealed that it had found a design problem which would allow potential attackers to bypass facial recognition login
by injecting a spoofed photo of a user’s face into the process.
The biggest obstacle standing in the way of the start-ups hoping to kill the password is how to change years of
habit. Eric Brown, founder of TAK Cyber, a cyber research and advisory company, argued that while sensitive
applications may rapidly shift from passwords, other websites have less motivation to update their systems. “You’ll
never get rid of them,” he said. “We’re never going to get to the post-password era.”
30. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Why passwords are the most sought-after data.
B. Why passwords are difficult to secure.
C. How passwords have caused us trouble.
D. How passwords are stolen by phishing emails.
31. What is Eric Brown’s attitude towards a passwordless future
A. Indifferent. B. Passionate. C. Objective D. Pessimistic.
第5页/共10页
32. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. Biometric authentication: password security solution!
B. Start-ups race to welcome a passwordless future.
C. Killing the password: a cure or a fantasy
D The argument to end passwords has begun.

The Positive Effects of a Positive Affect
Parents often have high hopes for how their children will turn out in adulthood, such as wanting them to be
healthy, to feel satisfied with their career, and to have strong friendships. 33
Recent research suggests that a teen’s affect—especially positive affect—is one critical factor. What exactly is
affect Affect is the tendency to express positive or negative emotions, which in turn influences how we experience
things and determine whether to judge a given situation as positive or negative. 34 Moreover, research suggests
that a person’s affect is relatively stable over time, especially by the time one reaches adulthood.
Affect is typically described in terms of being either positive or negative, and it seems that positive affect, in
particular, is related to a number of beneficial outcomes in adulthood.
In support of this crucial role that positive affect has in development, a study by researchers at the University
of Virginia followed teenagers and young adults from ages 14 to 25, allowing them to understand the predictive power
of positive affect across the critical developmental period from adolescence to young adulthood. 35 For example,
teens with a higher positive affect reported had a stronger, healthier attachment to their friends.
36 Positive affect also predicted increased self-worth and job competence, suggesting that, overall, positive
affect seems to be a key predictor of young adult success across several important areas of functioning.
But what about the effects of negative affect The researchers also examined whether negative affect would predict
problems in young adulthood. 37 Thus, the important takeaway is that adolescent positive affect may have
powerful links to important life outcomes in the domains of personal well-being, career, and social relationships up
to a decade later.
A. Affective responses to events typically happen automatically.
B. But what factors help produce these outcomes as teens move from adolescence to adulthood
C. So how can parents help their children grasp the meaning of positive affect
D. Interestingly, the results suggested that positive affect may go beyond helping teens build positive
relationships.
E. Unlike positive affect, having greater negative affect did not have any significant associations with any of the
later life outcomes.
F. The results uncovered that negative affect might account for many life problems when a teenager became a
young adult.
G. This study found that positive affect was strongly predictive of life outcomes in young adulthood, such as
developing better friendships.

Habit formation is the process by which behaviours become automatic. People develop countless habits as they
explore the world, whether they are aware of them or not. Understanding how habits take shape may be helpful in
changing bad habits.
Habits are built through learning and repetition. A person is thought to develop a habit in the course of pursuing
goals by beginning to associate certain cues (刺激) with behavioural responses that help meet the goal. Over time,
thoughts of the behaviour and ultimately the behaviour itself are likely to be triggered (触发) by these cues.
A “habit loop (环)” is a way of describing several related elements that produce habits. These elements are
called the cue, the routine, and the reward. For example, stress could serve as a cue that one responds to by eating,
which produces the reward—the reduction of stress. While a routine involves repeated behaviour, it’s not necessarily
performed in response to a deep-rooted urge, as a habit is.
Old habits can be difficult to shake, and healthy habits are often harder to develop. But through repetition, it’s
possible to form new habits. The amount of time needed to build a habit will depend on multiple factors, including
the individual and the intended behaviour. While you are able to pick up a new habit in a few weeks, it takes many
months to build a healthy habit.
Take some time to think about what leads to bad habits and re-evaluate what you get out of them (or don’t).
Consider and keep in mind why you want to make a change, including how the change reflects your values.
44. How are habits built

Dear Jim,
I’m thrilled to hear about your school’s Beijing study tour—what a fantastic opportunity to dive into the city’s
charm! I wholeheartedly recommend the “Beijing Central Axis Hiking” route.
As the backbone of Beijing, the central axis is a living museum of Chinese history. You’ll wander past
Tiananmen Square, the majestic Forbidden City and the serene Yonghe Temple, where ancient architecture and
cultural relics tell stories of dynasties gone by. Hiking lets you soak in the authentic atmosphere: you can taste local
snacks like jianbing on the way and chat with friendly locals, which no guided bus tour can pared to 798’s
modern art, this route reveals Beijing’s essence as an ancient capital, leaving you with profound cultural insights.
I’m certain you’ll cherish this journey. Let me know if you need tips on the best spots to visit!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Jim,
I’m delighted to learn about your upcoming study tour in Beijing, and I strongly suggest choosing the “798 Art
District Tour” route.
798 is a magical fusion of industrial heritage and contemporary art. Once old factories, the red-brick buildings

now house galleries, design studios and creative workshops. You’ll feast your eyes on diverse artworks—bold
paintings, innovative sculptures and immersive installations—from both renowned artists and emerging talents. What
makes it special is the lively vibe: you can attend small art talks, watch artists at work, or pick up unique handcrafted
souvenirs. Unlike the central axis’s traditional grandeur, 798 shows Beijing’s trendy, global side, offering a fresh and
inspiring cultural experience.
It’ll surely be unforgettable! Feel free to ask if you need more details about the district.
Yours sincerely,
