According to the main role types, there are four characters in Beijing opera: Sheng, Dan, Jing, and Chou. Sheng refers to male roles, such as the middle-aged scholars or old men. They are known for their beautiful singing and gentle movements. Dan stands for female roles, including graceful young ladies and brave female warriors. They are famous for sleeve dances and high-pitched (高音) singing. Jing are the painted-face roles, often representing loyal heroes or fierce generals. The Jing roles show strong personalities. Chou are the clown roles, making people laugh with funny actions and words.
