The Internet has become part of teenage life. There’s a report on 3,375 students aged from 10 to 18 in seven Chinese cities. It says that 38 percent of them believe they use the Internet often. While most of them get useful information and use the Internet to help in their studies, some are not using it in a good way. Many are playing online games too much. A few even visit websites they should not look at. Bad things can happen if young people spend too much time on the Internet.
In order to help young people use the Internet in a good way, a textbook on good Internet behavior has started to be used in some Shanghai middle schools this term. It uses real examples to teach students all about good ways of using the Internet. It gives useful advice such as it’s good to read news or find helpful information to study. Some students also make online friends. But if you are meeting a friend offline, let your parents know.
Teachers and parents all think the book is a very good idea. It will teach students how to be a good person in the online world. It will be a guide for teens to use the Internet and keep students away from bad sites.

Goldfish have long been a beloved family pet. However, there is a growing problem associated with these popular fish. Goldfish are taking over rivers in many towns where well-meaning people have “freed” their fish into the wild.
Such is the case in West Medical Lake of Washington. Goldfish can grow very large. As a result, their population grew quite fast, and they quickly destroyed (毁坏) all the food sources that the rest of the fish depend upon in the lake.
Sadly, setting free goldfish is very common. One survey of people in Texas found that anywhere from 20 to 70 percent of fish owners put their fish into bodies of water.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said that it can cost up to $150,000 to take away the foreign species (物种) from the lake. It’s such a serious problem that fish and wildlife officials said they are considering making setting goldfish free into the wild a crime (犯罪), and prosecuting (起诉) those responsible.
“If they get caught doing that and get prosecuted, they could have to pay for fixing the problem they created,” said Randy Osborne, a fisheries biologist for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
So what should you do if you no longer want to care for your pet fish Well, if you can’t find a willing friend or family member to help care for them, contact your local pet shop or animal shelter (避难所). Many shelters do not just find homes for cats and dogs, but also birds, rabbits and fish. You might also join a goldfish club in your town or on Facebook, and then reach out to people to try and find someone who can take care of your pet.
And, if your fish are ill, do not put these ill fish into the wild or flush (冲走) them down your toilet. “A sick fish can introduce harmful things like the disease it had into the water,” wrote PetHelpful, a website sharing knowledge on pets. “Keeping our waterways clean and safe is important for future generations.”
4.What do the underlined words “associated with” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Suitable for. B.Compared with.
C.Responsible for. D.Connected with.
5.What was one result of putting goldfish into West Medical Lake
A.They caused the lake to get dirtier.
B.There were fewer other fish in the lake.
C.They attracted other species to the lake.
D.Much money was wasted on saving them.
6.What action may be taken to stop people freeing goldfish into the wild
A.Punishing those who do it.
B.Praising people who do it.
C.Raising money to save freed goldfish.
D.Advising people to buy fewer goldfish.
7.What is paragraph 6 mainly about
A.The types of unwanted pet fish.
B.Where unwanted pet fish have gone.
C.How to deal with unwanted pet fish.
D.The importance of saving unwanted pet fish.
C
Farmers often lose crops because they cannot spot diseases fast enough. When a virus (病毒) spreads, it can destroy many plants and hurt nearby farms too. In Tanzania, several viruses attack crops every year. Farmers used to wait six months or more for lab results, but now a small, hand-held tool is changing everything.
The tool is made by a British company. It looks like a little box and is easy to carry to any field. First, a farmer cuts a tiny piece from a sick leaf. The tool then pulls out the plant’s DNA and reads it. Within two hours, it tells the farmer which virus is hurting the crop. This speed is very important, because the quicker the answer, the sooner the farmer can act.
After testing, farmer Asha Mohamed learned exactly which viruses were on her land. She was given two kinds of new seeds that can control those viruses. She planted them right away. Nine months later, scientists came back and saw tall, healthy plants and a big harvest. The same tool was also used in Kenya on Naomi Mumo’s pawpaw trees. The quick test showed the exact disease, and Naomi could choose the right treatment.
Because the tool is small and runs on batteries, farmers can use it anywhere. They do not need a big lab or a long waiting time. By finding viruses early and choosing resistant seeds, farmers protect their crops, their neighbors’ crops, and their income.
8.What was the main problem farmers faced in the past
A.A lack of modern farming techniques.
B.A shortage of high-quality farming land.
C.A slow process to find diseases in crops.
D.An inability to afford necessary supplies.
9.How does the hand-held tool help farmers
A.By watering the crops when needed.
B.By increasing the growth speed of the crops.
C.By reading the plant’s DNA to find the virus.
D.By predicting which diseases will spread next.
10.What happened to farmer Asha Mohamed after she used the tool
A.She got more land to plant her crops on.
B.She received money to help pay for her farm.
C.She was given special seeds that stop viruses.
D.All her crops became completely disease-proof.
11.Where is the text most likely from
A.A diary. B.A guidebook. C.A fairy novel. D.A science magazine.

The key to effective cross-cultural communication is knowledge. First, it is essential that people understand the potential (潜在的) problems of cross-cultural communication, and try their best to solve these problems. Second, it is important to know that one’s efforts will not always be successful, and change one’s behavior appropriately (恰当地).
For example, one should always think that there is a significant possibility that cultural differences are leading to communication problems, and be willing to be patient and forgiving, rather than hostile (敌对的) and offensive, if problems develop. One should respond slowly and carefully in cross-cultural exchanges, not jumping to the conclusion that you know what is being thought and said.
William Ury’s suggestion for heated conflicts is to stop, listen and think, or as he puts it“go to the balcony” when the situation gets tense. By this he means withdraw (撤退) from the situation, step back, and think about what is going on before you act. What could be going on here Is it possible I misunderstand what they said, or they misinterpreted me Often misinterpretation is the source of the problem.
Often intermediaries who are familiar with both cultures can be helpful in cross-cultural communication situations. They can translate both the substance and the manner of what is said. For instance, they can tone down strong statements that would be considered appropriate in one culture but not in another, before they are given to people from a culture that does not talk together in such a strong way. They can also adjust the timing of what is said and done. Some cultures move quickly to the point; others talk about other things long enough to establish a close relationship with the other person.
12.The passage mainly talks about ________.
A.the potential cross-cultural communication problems
B.how to make effective cross-cultural communication
C.how to avoid cross-cultural differences
D.the importance of being familiar with another culture
13.By saying go to the balcony, William Ury really means to ________.
A.refresh oneself during cross-cultural communication
B.get some sunlight and fresh air in the balcony
C.think of a way to join in the communication in the balcony
D.step out of the communication and calm oneself down
14.A “intermediary” in the last paragraph refers to a person who ________.
A.acts as a go-between during cross-cultural communication
B.acts as a translator during cross-cultural communication
C.keeps the cross-cultural communication going
D.can help people from different cultures reach an agreement
15.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.different cultures may have different timing of what is said and done
B.our active efforts can overcome all cross-cultural communication problems
C.one cannot have cross-cultural communication without overcoming problems
D.misunderstanding is the source of all cross-cultural communication problems

Finding Your Balance with Social Media
Social media is a big part of our lives. It helps us stay connected with friends and explore our interests. However, spending too much time on it can have negative effects. The key is to find a healthy balance.
First, be aware of how much time you are spending. 16 Most smartphones have a “screen time” feature that can show you the exact number. You might be surprised by the results.
Next, consider a “digital detox (排毒)”. 17 For example, you could decide not to use your phone during meals or for the first hour after you wake up. This helps you focus on the real world and the people around you.
Also, curate your online environment carefully. 18 If an account constantly makes you feel inadequate or unhappy, it’s okay to unfollow it. Your social media feed should be a place that inspires and supports you, not brings you down.
Furthermore, don’t believe everything you see. 19 People often only post the highlights of their lives, not the ordinary or difficult moments. Reminding yourself of this can reduce feelings of comparison and insecurity.
Finally, replace some of your online time with real-world activities. 20 Reading a book, playing a sport, or simply talking face-to-face with family can be much more fulfilling and relaxing.
Finding balance doesn’t mean giving up social media completely. It means using it as a tool for enrichment, not letting it control your time and emotions.
A.This means taking regular breaks from social media.
B.It’s important to know what is happening in the world.
C.Unfollowing negative accounts can make a big difference.
D.You can start by tracking your usage for a few days.
E.Remember that social media is a highlight reel, not real life.
F.Engage in hobbies that do not require a screen.
G.You don’t have to compare yourself with others online.

Last Saturday morning, I entered my backyard garden with great 21 . I have a deep passion for cultivating flowers there. When I cast my 22 upon my dahlia seedlings, I was shocked to find 23 in their leaves. It was clear that some pests were causing trouble.
At first, I decided to try a method I had read about. I 24 reading in a gardening book and hearing from neighbors about a useful approach of spreading crushed eggshells around the plants. They claimed that the 25 edges of the crushed eggshells would stop the slimy invaders (入侵者). I gathered a collection of dried eggshells, crushed them, and made a white circle around the seedlings, like a small fence.
26 , the next morning, to my disappointment, I saw a fat slug right inside the circle, still feasting on the leaves. I looked closely and realized that the slug’s slimy body enabled itself to move 27 over the eggshells. This attempt didn’t work.

Later, I attempted to make garlic spray. After mashing garlic in the kitchen, my hands had a strong and 30 smell. When I went to borrow garden shears (大剪刀) from my neighbor, they looked at me in a rather 31 way. I felt embarrassed and knew this wasn’t a practical 32 .
Finally, I had an idea. Instead of 33 against the slugs in a conventional way, I should find their natural enemies. I dug a shallow pit in the corner of the garden to hold water, which I hoped would 34 small frogs. I also hung a simple birdhouse on a tree. Every morning, I could hear birds chirping as they searched for food.
Slowly, the slugs disappeared. This experience taught me a valuable lesson. Gardening isn’t about fighting nature but living in harmony with it. It made me 35 the delicate balance within small ecosystems and improve my understanding of how to maintain a healthy garden.

Xiao Yu crushed the rice balls into small pieces and sprinkled them gently near the bird. She called her biology teacher at once, telling him what she had found. The teacher, who had rich experience in animal rescue, advised her to keep still and not to touch the bird, as sudden moves would scare it. He also said that she could cover the bird with a clean cloth to keep it warm. Following the advice, Xiao Yu did as told, and soon the bird stopped trembling and began to peck at the rice crumbs.
With the help of the biology teacher, the little bird’s wing gradually recovered. The teacher brought professional bandages and cleaned the bird’s wound carefully. He explained to Xiao Yu that the wing was just slightly broken and would heal well with proper care. Every day, Xiao Yu came to feed the bird and change its bandage. After a month, the bird could fly again. Watching it fly into the sky, Xiao Yu understood that helping animals needs both kindness and scientific methods.
