Greece announced a ? 1.6 billion plan to fight its falling population on 18th September, 2025. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the plan will begin in 2026 and is the country’s “boldest tax reform in more than 50 years.”
The new measures include a 2% tax cut for all tax groups and no tax at all for low-income families with four children. Families will also receive higher payments for having children. A “baby bonus,” first offered in 2020, has increased to ?1,700 for a first child and to ?3,500 for a fourth child, plus up to ?140 per child each month.
The government will also remove real estate taxes in remote areas to encourage young people to move to the countryside, where houses are more affordable than in cities.
Greece’s fertility rate (生育率) is only 1.4 children per woman, which is less than the replacement rate of 2.1. Experts say at that rate the population, now 10.2 million, could fall below 8 million by 2050. By then, 36% of Greeks may be over 65. The finance minister said fertility rates dropped sharply after the economic crisis 15 years ago. More than 500,000 Greeks left the country in search of work after that crisis. Besides, although the government is offering incentives (激励), many young Greeks say high living costs and low wages make it hard to start families. This year, Greece’s education ministry even closed over 700 schools because there were not enough students.
Officials call the population problem a “national threat”, but it remains to be seen if the new plan will change the country’s future.

A.To provide a baby bonus. B.To tackle the economic crisis.
C.To address the population decline. D.To improve the national education system.
29.Which of the following is a measure in the new plan for families
A.A 2% tax rise for all tax groups.
B.A “baby bonus” of ?3,500 for a fourth child.
C.No tax for low-income families with two children.
D.?140 per month for all families regardless of children.
30.Which is NOT the reason for Greece’s population problem
A.The economic crisis in 2008.
B.High living costs and low wages.
C.A fertility rate below the replacement level.
D.Many young people leaving the country after the economic crisis.
31.What can we infer from the passage
A.The “baby bonus” was first introduced in 2025.
B.The new plan has already solved Greece’s population problem.
C.The education ministry of Greece will open more schools next year.
D.Housing in Greek cities is more expensive than that in the countryside.
Even young children know that chocolate is a treat. But the “dark” variety, which has more cocoa, is labeled as healthier and even as a health-booster. Dark chocolate, it is suggested, can alleviate all manner of problems, from high blood pressure to depression, while improving mental health. Many studies indicate this may be true. Sadly, the latest research denies the idea.
Dark chocolate’s benefits are from compounds called flavanols (黄烷醇), which are particularly abundant in cocoa. Researchers have looked at the health effects of foods containing flavanols such as cocoa products, coffee, tea, berries, grapes and apples. Some trials have found beneficial effects, for example on blood pressure.
A big randomised trial called COSMOS warns the public against these shortcomings. To get enough flavanols, you would need to eat between 50g and 280g of dark chocolate, depending on its flavanol concentration. That is to say, you will have lots of sugar and fat, which are added abundantly by manufacturers to counter the bitterness of cocoa.
If you decide to treat yourself to some chocolate every now and then, don’t sweat about finding the darkest variety. Some very dark chocolates contain few flavanols, whereas some milk varieties have lots. The healthiest flavanol-boosting strategy is to eat more fruits, vegetables, nuts and to put the kettle on. Two apples, a portion of nuts and a large serving of strawberries provide roughly 500mg of flavanols. So do two to three cups of green tea.
Sadly for chocoholics, the health claims for dark chocolate come from wishful thinking and sly marketing, not the findings of science.
32.What does “alleviate” mean in paragraph 1
A.Ease. B.Detect. C.Diagnose. D.Examine.
33.Why does COSMOS warn against getting flavanols from dark chocolate
A.Because most dark chocolates are too bitter to eat.
B.Because you may consume too much sugar and fat.
C.Because flavanols in chocolate are destroyed during processing.
D.Because dark chocolate has fewer flavanols than milk chocolate.
34.What is the author’s suggestion for people who want to get flavanols
A.Drink two to three cups of coffee every day.
B.Eat as much dark chocolate as possible every day.
C.Choose cocoa powder or ground cacao beans only.
D.Consume more fruits, vegetables, nuts and green tea.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.How to Get Flavanols from Daily Foods
B.Dark Chocolate: A Must-Eat Healthy Snack
C.Dark Chocolate: The Secret to a Healthy Heart

The Annual “Regret Burning” ceremony held in the school garden was a cherished and old tradition. On the eve of graduation, seniors would gather to write down their deepest regrets onto pieces of paper and cast them into a symbolic flame, each hoping to feel unburdened and ready to begin a new life. Among them stood Sarah, silent and still, grasping a wrinkled note that felt like a lead weight in her damp palm. While those around her released embarrassments or tales of unrequited (没有回报的) affection, her own paper held an admission of betrayal — one that had cost her a precious friendship.
Her mind raced back to the regional art competition during their sophomore year. She and Chloe, her closest friend, had both got down to drawing pieces they had poured their hearts into. Late the night before submissions were due, overwhelmed by an increasing insecurity about her own work, Sarah slipped into the silent art room. With a trembling hand and a heart pounding in guilt, she deliberately dirtied Chloe’s carefully painted portrait. The following day, Chloe’s piece was disqualified for being “damaged and untidy.” Broken-hearted, Chloe never learned the truth, yet something in her changed. She slowly withdrew from their friendship, and the bright, trusting light in her eyes forever dimmed. All through the following years, Sarah could only watch helplessly as their bond faded, poisoned by her own envy, weakness and selfishness.
Now, standing just a few feet away, Sarah watched as Chloe released her own regret into the fire with a quiet sigh. The sight made Sarah hold her note tightly, wrinkling it further. The flames leaped and danced before her, their lively flickering (跳动) seem to laugh at her frozen hesitation. Deep down, she knew that casting this secret into the fire wouldn’t truly burn it away; it would only scatter ash over a wound that had never healed.

【原文】One sunny afternoon, Ben saw a dog when he was walking near his home. It held its tail between its legs, which Ben thought was a sign that it was scared. He gently bent down and said, “It’s okay. I won’t hurt you.” Surprisingly, the dog waved its tail just a little. It looked dirty, like it had been outside for days. He thought for a moment and then decided to take it home. After giving the dog a bath and a meal, Ben took a photo of the dog and made some posters with the words “Lost dog” and his phone number on them. But days passed and no one called. Ben began to grow attached to the dog, which followed him everywhere and waved its tail every time it saw him. One evening, as Ben and the dog played in the park, a lady rushed over, calling, “Max! Max!” The dog ran to her, jumping with joy. Ben couldn’t bear to let it go, but he said softly to the dog, “You’re home now.” The lady thanked Ben for his kindness. It’s a lesson for Ben. He learned that sometimes helping others means letting go, but the good you do will always be remembered.

66. A Meaningful Career Day
Last weekend, our school held a Career Day, aiming to help students explore career paths and raise their awareness of career planning.
Professionals from diverse fields gave lectures sharing their work experiences. Students joined hands-on activities that allowed them to try jobs like doctors, teachers and engineers. What made the day unforgettable was the one-on-one talks with the experts, which deepened our understanding of different careers.
This activity has inspired us to think more about our future goals. In my view, it was a rewarding event, offering us a valuable chance to connect classroom knowledge with real-world work.
67.One possible version:
Just as the flames were about to consume the last note, Sarah suddenly stepped out of the crowd. A surge of long-suppressed guilt pushed her forward. “I need to say something.” she announced. Her voice was barely a whisper at first, then grew stronger. She unfolded the wrinkled note, not to burn it, but to read it aloud. “Two years ago, I ruined Chloe’s art competition entry,” she declared, forcing herself to meet Chloe’s shocked eyes. “It was me. My envy destroyed our friendship.” The crackling fire seemed to be the only sound in the silence, its light shining on the faces of their listening peers.
As the truth settled, Sarah felt a hand gently take hers. It was Chloe, whose expression was a complex mix of hurt, understanding, and relief. “A part of me always wondered,” Chloe said softly, with her voice thick with emotion. “Thank you for not letting our friendship end with a lie.” She didn’t offer empty forgiveness, but the simple act of reaching out. Watching their clasped hands, Sarah understood that some fires couldn’t erase the past, but honesty could pave a path to a future where healing was possible. The ceremony ended not with the dying ashes of burnt regrets, but with the kindling of a fragile, hard-earned hope.
