短语是具有一定意义但不构成句子或从句的一组词。短语的分类:
名词短语 (Noun Phrases):
指以一个名词为中心构成的短语,在句子的功能相当于名词。
形容词短语 (Adjective Phrases):
指以一个形容词为中心构成的短语,在句子的功能相当于形容词。
副词短语 (Adverb Phrases):
指以一个副词为中心构成的短语,在句子的功能相当于副词。
名词短语(NP)
在句中的功能相当于名词,可作主语、宾语、表语、宾语补足语等。
A red car is parked outside.
She is my good friend.
He likes the girl in pink.
The company appointed him regional manager of the south.

注意:
核心名词的前后可加修饰语,放在名词前面的修饰语叫前置定语;放在名词后面的修饰语叫后置定语。
作前置定语的修饰语:
1. 限定词(用来明确名词所指的范围或特征)
主要包括冠词(a, an, the)、指示代词(this, that, these, those)、物主代词(my, your, his等)、不定代词(some, any, no, neither等)及数词(one, two, first等)。

如:the girl, a pen, this bike, my phone, some water, three books,
red kite, sports shoes...
(用来表示名词的性质和特征)
作后置定语的修饰语:
1. 定语从句
如:the girl who won the singing competition
2. 分词短语
如:a boy swimming in the river ; a pen bought by her mother
3. 不定式短语
如:the first person to arrive at the station
4. 介词短语
如:a painting on the classroom wall
5. 形容词短语
如:high school students eager to stand out

形容词短语(AdjP)
在句中的功能相当于形容词,可以做定语、表语、状语和宾语补足语。
构成:
1.“形容词+and等并列连词+形容词”
如:The apple is big and round.
2. “very等程度副词+形容词”
如:I am very hungry.
3. “形容词+介词短语”
如:He is interested in watching TV.
4. “形容词+不定式短语”
如:It is a problem difficult to solve.

副词短语(AdvP)
副词短语在句中主要用作状语,修饰动词、形容词、副词等。
构成:
1. “副词+and等并列连词+副词”
She sang softly and sweetly at the evening party.
2. “very等程度副词+其他副词”
He worked very hard to finish the project.
3. “副词+介词短语”
He went on studying deep into the night.

Cheerleader Try-outs
I’ve always wanted to be a cheerleader. Yesterday, I tried out for the team. It was hard. First, we had to dance. The teacher showed us how to move, and then we tried. Second, we practiced singing a song about the school basketball team. Finally, some girls had to lift their partners. The other girls jumped and cheered. I think I did well, but the other girls were better. I'm not sure if I'll make the team or not.
