三、阅读理解(满分35分)
A
Don Powell, 72, was getting his mail from the mailbox (邮箱) outside his home as usual. He found something strange. Inside the mailbox, there were tiny dolls sitting on a small sofa. A note with them said, “We’ve decided to live here,” signed by Mary and Shelley. Don thought someone had left the dolls by mistake. But when he asked his neighbors, no one knew anything about it.
Don and his wife, Nancy, put up the special mailbox four years ago. Don joked that he could understand why dolls would want to move into such a nice home. He moved the dolls to the back of the mailbox, hoping someone would take them back, but they stayed. Over the next few weeks, more small things mysteriously (神秘地) appeared: a table, a pillow, a bed, a painting, and even a pot.
Don, with his sense of humor, added a note suggesting the dolls needed a fridge, though it never arrived. The dolls remained in the mailbox. Don shared the mystery on a neighborhood (街坊) app called Nextdoor. His post quickly caught people’s attention, and his neighbors were interested in the strange “visitors”.
Some neighbors thought Don was behind the saga — the strange happenings that had everyone in town talking. The story seemed to grow bigger each day, but Don stated he wasn’t the one who created it. He only provided the dolls with a place to live. Others thought someone in the community was having fun with it.
As time went by, Don started to enjoy the mystery. He said, “I like the mystery. “Neighbors liked the strange story and came over to ask questions. Don decided not to care about who was making the dolls’ home. He hoped the story would keep going.

Eating healthy and balanced meals is one of the keys to good health. But there’s another important key which is often forgotten by us. That is having those meals at the right time.
Understanding the science behind meal timing can have a huge influence on your health. More research is showing that correct mealtime might help people lose weight and reduce risks of disease. According to the experts, “It’ s about the when, rather than the what.” Incorrect mealtimes can be against all the advantages of your healthy diet.
In addition, each of us needs a given amount of energy each day. This energy is produced from the grains, proteins, and fats that we take in. When we fail to eat adequately through the day (for example, only one or two meals), it can be challenging to meet our energy needs.
There are different ways to have a meal plan that makes you feel your best. The list below may be a good place to start.
●6:00-9:45 a. m. Break your fast. This window is the perfect time to have breakfast. Think of a breakfast that includes healthy fat and protein like eggs, cheese, or plant seeds and so on.
●10:00-11:00 a. m. Snack it up. Given breakfast has now been a few hours ago and lunch still feels light years away. Having something light but tasty is wonderful. Pick an apple or some pine nuts (坚果). The high-fiber and high-protein snack is helpful to stop you from feeling hungry.
●1:00 p. m. Lunch Break. Work and study tasks can make you have lunch later or even forget it. But waiting until later in the afternoon or evening could lead to eating too much and making less healthy choices. Research supports eating an earlier lunch.
●3:00 - 4:00 p. m. Snack again. As with your morning snack, a high-fiber and high-protein snack is a good choice.
●6:30 p. m. Dinnertime. Research supports having dinner at 6-7 p. m. Eating an earlier dinner and getting away from late night (10 p. m. and after) meal can help you sleep better. A dinner that is high in fiber and low in fat can help you fall asleep faster and increase your time in dreamland.
30.What’s the writer’s opinion on correct mealtime
A.It’s another key to being healthy. B.Eating at the right time is difficult.
C.What to eat is more important than it. D.It’s against the advantages of healthy diet.
31.According to the passage, what may happen if we have fewer than three meals a day
A.We will not get sick easily. B.It’s hard for us to get enough energy.
C.It’ll make us have less unhealthy food. D.We may feel hungry during work or study.
32.According to the writer, which is a healthy decision
A.Having lunch during teatime. B.Starting the day without breakfast.
C.Eating some pine nuts at work. D.Eating a sandwich for late night dinner.
33.What is the best title for the passage

The ground shook suddenly. Houses moved, and people ran into the streets with scare. With people running around, Zhang Heng stood still, thinking quickly. “There must be a way to know when this will happen,” he thought. He had seen many earthquakes (地震) in his life, and each time, people couldn’t do anything. But this time, Zhang Heng decided to find a method.
For days, he could think of nothing else but the earthquake. He was a man who loved science and understood the power of nature. After studying the stars, the sky, and the earth for years, Zhang Heng had an idea—what if there was a machine that could feel earthquakes before they happened
Without wasting any time, Zhang Heng began to work on his invention. He used bronze (青铜) to create a large container with eight dragon heads, each holding a small ball in its mouth. At the bottom of each dragon, he placed a frog. If an earthquake happened, the shaking would cause the ball to fall into the frog’s mouth, showing the direction of the earthquake.
Months of hard work passed, and one night, Zhang Heng was ready to test his invention. Suddenly, the ground shook again. His heart raced as he rushed to the machine. To his surprise, one of the dragon heads dropped its ball! The ball fell into the frog’s mouth, pointing west. Zhang Heng smiled with excitement. It worked!
A few days later, a strong earthquake hit the west, just as the Seismoscope (地动仪) had shown. People were amazed, and Zhang Heng’s invention saved many lives by giving them a warning before the disaster.

Be brave. No matter what the topic is, talking to your parents will help reduce your worries. Don’t feel worried or embarrassed because your parents are always there for you. They may also know more than you think.
Don’t worry that your parents will get upset. Your conversation can go well with good planning and communication. Your parents get worried because they care about you and want the best for you. With that in mind, they will be happy that you are asking for their advice on a problem.
Don’t avoid the conversation. Problems or embarrassment won’t simply go away if you avoid talking to your parents. Bring it out in the open. Your parents want to understand you, and solving problems together can help reduce your stress.
Choose a good time to talk. Check when your parents are free. You and your parents don’t want to talk when they are busy with work or cooking dinner. Also, pick a quiet environment with no distractions (干扰), like the TV or phone calls.
Plan for the outcome. You may know what you want from the conversation, but your parents might give different answers. Be ready for that. Hopefully, you want the conversation to go your way but it’s okay if it doesn’t. You should understand that you’re not alone—there are many people who can offer help, including teachers and other trusted adults.
38.Why is it difficult for parents and children to communicate openly

Monday, January 13th
Dear Diary,
Today was a special day! I attended the Healthy-eating Salon at the Student Center from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
I listened to a lecture on the importance of healthy eating, learning about the benefits of fruits, vegetables, and balanced diets. Then, we had a cooking class, making healthy snacks like fruit salad and vegetable smoothies. Cooking with classmates was enjoyable, and we tasted our creations. We wrapped up the salon with a discussion, sharing our feelings and experiences. I talked about the significance of healthy eating and heard insightful ideas from my classmates.
I left feeling inspired and motivated to improve my diet and lifestyle, hoping to influence my friends and family as well.
