“Bamboo in the Rock” is a Chinese poem by a man named Zheng Xie, often called
Zheng Banqiao. Zheng is a great artist and poet. He is a (a)lso a government
worker in the Qing dynasty (清朝). He h (h)ates the unfair (不公平的) things in the
government, so he starts making art and writing poems about things like bamboo.
Those poems are e (e)asy to understand but have deep meanings (含义).
His poem paints a p(p)icture of bamboo growing strong within rocks on a
mountain. The bamboo faces lots of difficulties, like the w(w)ind from every side, but
it keeps standing up straight. The bamboo is a symbol of strength and determination (
