As we walk the “path of life”, we may sometimes wish to be alone with our own thoughts, for quiet periods of reflection can lead to personal improvement. However, when we seek to be alone, we must be careful that we do not always escape into our own world. Social life is also important to us. More often than not, close friendships will help smooth out the sometimes rocky road that we are all meant to travel.

The fourth fruit of friendship is the growth of one’s character. Naturally, this growth comes from sharing our lives with friends. When we feel happy or sad, friends help us recognize our good qualities and overcome difficulties. Moreover, friendship makes us stronger: it gives us courage, changes our behavior for the better, and helps us through hard times. Also, when we feel awkward or suffer pain, friends bring us comfort and help us recover. All in all, friendship slowly changes us into better people, just like a rough stone becomes smooth and bright after polishing.
