explain
W: Oh, I get it, so you were sending him secret hand signals. respond + new topic
M: Yeah, we got the idea from an action movie last night and decided to try it out
for fun. In the movie, the police were trying to enter a house, but they had to be
really quiet so they could take the criminals by surprise. So, the police leader used
hand gestures to tell his team what to do. For example, he used this gesture to tell
them how many bad guys were in the house. Then he gave instructions on who
should go where, and what they should do. I thought it was pretty cool how they
used hand gestures to communicate.
W: Well, you know, you can say a lot without speaking. I've been taking acting
classes, and right now we're learning how to use body language to express ourselves.
How did speakers ask for and give clarification
We actually had to watch some of movies and act
out some scenes.
M: Wow, that's cool. So you mean you're not allowed to talk, right
W: Yes, and it's really difficult if they want you to express something
complicated without saying a word. But I'm slowly getting better at it, I
guess.
M: That reminds me of those Charlie Chaplin movies. I guess it's not easy
to tell a whole story only using body language.
Listening scripts
W: Yeah, he was a real master. Everyone in my class loves his movies.
M: Well, it's good you tried. Now, by your body language, I can tell that
you want to buy me lunch tomorrow. Am I right
I was such an amateur! her experience was still good
Acting & Speaking
Act out a scene using only body language to communicate.
You may follow these steps to complete your performance.
①Work with your group . One of you is the
performer, and the others are observers.
②The performer acts out the scene and the
observers guess their meaning.
③The actor reveals the situation and messages.
Use the table to clarify any
misunderstandings or different answers.
performer:
giving clarification
In other words, I’m…
What I meant was …
What I was trying to say was …
Does that make sense
Is that clear
expressions
observers:
asking for clarification
If you know this scene:
So you mean you are…
So did that mean you are…
If you don’t know this scene:
What I don’t quite understand is …
What did you mean by doing this gesture/posture
Could you explain …
Could you give me an example
Acting & Speaking
Let’s look at an example of asking for and giving
clarification.
A:What did you mean by putting your hand on your
stomach
B: Can you guess
A: So did that mean you have a stomachache
B: What I mean was I am full after the meal.
A: What I don’t quite understand is that what’s the
difference between having a stomachache and being
full
B: We need to pay attention to the gesture and the
facial expression as well. If I am having a stomachache,
I may frown to show the pain.
