2. discuss the impacts of technology on jobs, combining ideas from
the passage and comments.
3. talk about what people could do in the face of the changing job
market.
Look and Say
Look at the pictures below and answer the questions. Use the words and expressions to help you.

突然出现
1 What jobs can you see in the pictures
2 What do you think might happen to these jobs in the future
Pilot, cashier, tour guide, and fashion designer.
For the pilot: Autopilot technology is developing fast. Human pilots
may also be replaced by new technology later.
For the cashier: It’s a traditional job. With new technology, cashiers
may be replaced by machines, so this job might
disappear.
For the fashion designer: As new needs (like virtual reality clothing) come, traditional fashion designers may develop into VR fashion designers.
For the tour guide: New needs (like space travel) may appear, so new types of tour guides (e.g., space tour guides) could spring up.
Discuss
1 What other new jobs do you think may spring up in the future
2 What other traditional jobs will disappear in the future
People's jobs have changed throughout history. If you lived in the mid-1300s, you might have been a mouse catcher. The job was well respected centuries ago, but few people do it today. Now, technology is developing at an even faster speed. Some traditional jobs are disappearing. However, new ones are springing up to meet new needs.
Cashier
Cashiers in shops and supermarkets may not be necessary in the near future. They may soon be replaced by machines. People can pay on their own in these places.
Pilot
Autopilots were first used in planes over a century ago. With the development of new technology, perhaps there will be no human pilots in the future!
Jobs soon to be history
Jobs of the future
Space tour guide
Space tourism started over 20 years ago. In the future, travelling to space will surely be provided at a lower cost. Space tour guides will be needed to lead people to the moon and beyond!
Virtual reality fashion designer
In the future, more people will work and play in virtual reality. People will need cool and fashionable clothes. So VR fashion designers will be greatly needed!

How fast the job market changes! We can't just sit at our

Answer the questions.
1 What does Cynthia263 mean by “Will pilots' jobs go up in smoke "
2 What does JZhang00 mean by "sit at our desks"
Cynthia263 means that she is worried that pilots' jobs may completely disappear in the future. “Go up in smoke” is like saying something burns away into nothing
Here, “sit at our desks” is a metaphor for doing nothing and being unresponsive to changes. He means that the world of work is changing fast, so we must learn new skills and be ready for new kinds of work, instead of doing nothing and hoping things stay the same..
3 What does JerryMc's comment mean
JerryMc is joking but also serious. He wants to try space travel, but he is worried that if his job as a cashier disappears, he won’t have enough money to go. So his comment shows a mix of interest in new things and anxiety about job loss.
Think and Share
1 Why do you think jobs change over time
I think jobs change over time mainly because of new technology and people’s changing needs. For example, long ago, many people worked on farms. Later, machines were invented, so fewer farmers were needed, but more factory workers were needed. Now, computers and robots can do some repetitive jobs, so jobs like cashier or data entry clerk may be fewer. At the same time, new jobs appear, such as app developer or social media manager, because people use smartphones and the internet a lot. So changes in technology and society make some old jobs disappear and new jobs appear.
2. Which comment do you most agree with Why
Read the comments and think about the reasons behind the people's opinions. Then decide which comment you most agree with. Give a well-supported reply to it.
Learning to think For question 2
I most agree with JZhang00’s comment. Because the job market changes very fast—if we just stay in our comfort zone and refuse to adapt, we might be left behind. His idea reminds us to be proactive about changes, which is practical for dealing with future job challenges.
3 How can we keep up with the changing job market
Learn new skills, especially in technology, communication, and problem-solving.
Stay curious about new trends, such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, or green energy.
Try different activities or subjects in school to find what we like and are good at.
Be flexible — be willing to adjust our career plans and try new types of work.
Benjamin Franklin
“Change is the only constant in life. One’s ability to adapt to those changes will determine your success in life.”
