He learned that “failure is a part of life. This means failure is common in life, but it is temporary— we shouldn’t be stuck in sadness because new chances will come.
Complete the chart with the words and expressions from the passage.
Four years ago
I ___________ the basketball team. But I failed because I wasn't ________ enough. I was so ___________ about this. Even my friends were ________. Then my best friend suggested that I should try something else. I tried swimming and soon __________with the sport.
tried out for
tall
disappointed
worried
fell in love
Now
I have won competitions and made friends. My life has changed. I have also got a new understanding of my _____________ . I realise that ________ is a part of life. But it lasts just ________.
pains and gains
failure
a moment
Answer the questions.
1. From what sentences can you see that basketball was
really a big deal for the writer
This has been my dream since I was little! I have practised so much, and it all ended today. I feel very bad...
2. If something "falls upon" you, do you think it's a good
thing or bad thing
It’s a bad thing because "falls upon" means something (usually negative or unexpected) happens to someone, and in the text, this phrase is used to describe failure happening to the writer, so it refers to a negative event here.
3. What's the meaning of "When one door closes, another
opens."
It means when one opportunity is lost, another new opportunity will come.
Think and Share
1. How will the writer feel if he fails in a swimming
competition Why
2. Have you ever experienced a terrible moment Share it
with the class.
E.g. He won't feel extremely bad. Because he has learned that failure is a part of life and lasts just a moment—he knows new opportunities will come, so he can face the swimming competition failure calmly.
Learning to think for question 1 To predict the writer's feelings, you need to consider: How did the writer feel about the failure four years ago How does he feel about it now What has he learnt in these years
