Modal Verbs
Part 1
情态动词表示说话人对某一动作或状态的感情、态度或语气，表示“可能；必须；应当；必要”等。其本身具有一定的意义，但不能单独作谓语，必须和主要动词一起构成谓语。通常无人称和数的变化，其后必须加动词原形。否定形式：在其后加not 。英语中常用的情态动词有can, could, may, might, must等。

表示能力，“能、会”。（could为can的过去式）
* My little sister can swim.
* He could play the piano when he was five years old.
表示允许或请求，“可以”。
* You can park your car here.
* — Can I use your pen
— Yes, you can. （肯定回答）
— No, you can’t. （否定回答）

注意：could用于疑问句时，比can在语气上更委婉、客气，但回答时需用can或can’t。
* — Could I try it again
— Of course. / Yes, you can. （肯定回答）
— Sorry, you can’t. （否定回答）
表示推测，常用于否定和疑问；could可能性比can小。
* The lady can’t/ couldn’t be over eighty.

* You may stay here if you wish.
用于现在时的疑问句中，might比may语气上更委婉。
肯定回答：Yes, …may./ Yes, certainly./ Yes, of course. / Sure. 否定回答：No, …may not./ No, … mustn’t. (口气坚决)/ No, … can’t. (口语)
* — May/ Might I have a talk with you
— Yes, of course. （肯定回答）
— No, you may not. （否定回答）

表示推测，常用于肯定和否定句中，might可能性比may小一些。
* She may/ might have left her book in the library.
* Li Lei might not come to your birthday party.
may常放在句首表示祝愿，用于“May+主语+动词原形”。

表示“必须”，指主观语气。
* I must finish my homework on time.
表示肯定推测，“一定是、准是”。
* The light is on, so he must be at home.
表命令，多用其否定形式mustn’t，表示“不准、禁止”。
* You mustn’t tell lies.

注意：用must提问的一般疑问句，肯定回答时用must，否定回答时用needn’t/ don’t have to，表示“没必要”。

表示“不得不”，强调客观需要，有人称、数和时态的变化。
* Judy has to stay in bed because of her illness.
