Non-circulating banknotes of various countries
The Bank of England has issued a total of 10 one-million-pound banknotes in its history, two in the late 19th century (white) and eight in the mid-20th century (green). These bills were only used for inter-governmental loans(政府间借贷),which were abolished(废除)after a few months of use. None of the white million-pound banknotes have survived, while only two green ones remain, which can be seen in the museum.
Summary of the story
When American youth Henry Adams was wandering on the streets of London, he was selected by two wealthy brothers to participate in a gambling game: they gave him an uncatchable(无法找零的)bill for a million pounds, betting on whether he could survive for a month with this bill. As a result, Henry not only survived, but also used people‘s worship(崇拜)of money to enter high society, eventually becoming a wealthy man and gaining love.
Theme and satire(讽刺)
Critique of Materialism(拜金主义批判 ): Through the shift in people‘s attitudes to Henry in restaurants, clothing stores, and other settings, exposing the distorted(扭曲的) values of a society that prioritizes money(金钱至上).
Artistic Features(艺术特色)
Exaggeration(夸张)and Humor: Mark Twain uses absurd plots (荒诞的情节) to enhance the satirical(讽刺的)effect.
Social Allegory(社会寓意): Although the story is set in 19th-century Britain, it directly points to the worship of money that is prevalent(主流的)in capitalist(资本主义的)societies.
