As an English saying goes, “Laughter is the best medicine.” In these troubling times, good humor is in need more than ever. Doctors and medical staff are taking heed of this and making it part of their care treatments. One product of this is the appearance of clown doctors and healthcare clowns in hospitals around the globe. There is even an organization that sets standards—the European Federation of Healthcare Clowns Organizations was established in 2011. It says: “Healthcare clowns bring moments of happiness to children who are ill or who have special needs and take their mind off their illness… Clowns also bring smiles to weak adults, including seniors and people with brain disease who are in hospital care.”

A couple of university students designed the Plufl, the world’s first dog bed for humans.
If you’re thinking that the Plufl is just an oversized dog bed, you’re technically right, but according to its creators, two students from the University of British Columbia, Noah Silverman and Yuki Kinoshita, it’s much more than that. The Plufl can provide the most suitable nap experience, and a sense of security. And it is good for those who have ADHD (注意缺陷多动障碍) or problems related to stress and anxiety.
一、基础题—第二组
Recently on the Kickstarter crowdfunding (众筹) platform, the Plufl has already blown past its funding goal of $ 25,000, receiving over $ 155,000 from hundreds of backers (支持者). Even though it’s not the cheapest dog bed in the world at $ 400, the Plufl seems to have quite a lot of fans already.
Noah Silverman and Yuki Kinoshita said that they came up with the idea of a dog bed for humans while hanging out at a coffee shop in Vancouver called Great Dane Coffee, where they made friends with both the owners and their pet Great Dane Lady. They saw Lady sleeping in its custom-made bed, which made Noah ask himself, “Why shouldn’t people have this, too ”
一、基础题—第二组
Unlike an actual dog bed, the Plufl is much more comfortable, thanks to the memory foam cushion (泡沫垫) that allows users to rest their heads on it when they want. Also, each bed has straps (带子) and a bag, so that it can be easily stored or transported.
The shape of the Plufl encourages a fetal position (胎儿睡姿) (the most common and comfortable sleep form according to research), while the thick pillow allows users to curl (卷) up their hands and feet, having a feeling of security.
1. What is the Plufl
2. What does the underlined phrase “blown past” mean in Paragraph 3
3. How much money did the Plufl exceed its original funding goal
4. Why did Noah Silverman and Yuki Kinoshita decide to create the Plufl

“No building comes without carvings, and carvings make buildings more valuable,” goes an old saying in Minnan, an area in southern Fujian Province. The saying refers to brick carvings, which were an important feature of the old red brick buildings in the area.
The carvings were once commonly found on either side of the main entrances of Minnan’s buildings. However, with the development, the number of ancient red brick buildings has decreased, and Minnan’s brick carvings have gradually faded from sight, said Wu Jiandong, a young master brick carver from Quanzhou City, Fujian Province.
二、提高题—第一组
Wu has learned the traditional technique and now combines it with modern tastes to develop his own style of brick carvings. Wu said that he hoped to be able to help the traditional craft continue through innovation.
“Market demands have changed in recent years, and so has our thinking,” Wu said. “We must add modern elements to help pass down and develop the traditional craft.”
People in Minnan love tea, so Wu created a series of carved brick tea decorations, including tea plates, cup holders, pot holders and other items. They have been warmly received by local people and foreign visitors.
二、提高题—第一组
Earlier this year, a pendant (挂件) decorated with a swallow tail ridge (燕尾脊) and a bright moon was bought by an overseas Chinese man from the Philippines. The customer told Wu that he would hang the pendant in his office as a reminder of the architecture and the moon of his hometown.
Because more and more people get to love his carvings, Wu will be able to pass down the craft and further develop his works, and the popularity of short videos has given him hopes of promoting Minnan’s brick carvings.
The art form originated during the Song Dynasty and flourished (繁荣) during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is now an important part of our national cultural heritage.

Most parents are worried the first time they catch their kids out in a lie. According to the child and teen psychiatrist (精神病学家), Gayani De Silva, lying can actually be a sign of healthy development of young children. “Kids lie for many reasons, and many of them are normal,” De Silva says. “People are not born with the knowledge of communicating with others and getting their needs met. They’ll experiment with different communication styles and techniques until they find the ones that work best for them. Lying is one of those techniques.”
三、拔尖题
As kids get older, they become more aware of how their actions affect others, and many will lie less frequently. In spite of this, parents still need to lead their kids to form a habit of not lying. According to De Silva, when children lie, look at them directly and ask what they need. After they tell you, gently remind them that telling you directly will be more effective than lying.
It’s also a good idea to model the behavior you want to see in your kids. In other words, don’t lie to your children. This will set you and your children on a course of open communication and trust.
三、拔尖题
In some cases, lying is a sign of a deeper issue. A child who is neglected will lie more than a child who has attentive and responsive parents. He’s not sure whether he’s loved. He may lie to please others. The same goes for a child who has experienced something unpleasant. He may lie to hide his shame, to avoid admitting his needs, or to control his surroundings to ensure his safety.
By paying attention to the reasons behind a lie, parents can figure out what need to be done. “For example, while Jack might lie about completing his homework in order to play video games, he also might be trying to avoid negative feelings connected with school work, and this is just where parents should start,” says therapist Gideon Javna.
三、拔尖题
1. According to De Silva, why do young children lie
2. What does De Silva suggest parents should do after discovering a child’s lie
3. What can parents do to help their children develop a habit of not lying
