I ran into the forest to my favorite place and sat down on my special rock. I knew no one could find me. At last I had peace and quiet. I lifted my guitar and began to play.
“Hi, Desha!”
Shocked, I found my brother James standing behind me.
“Don’t you have a basketball game to watch ” I complained.
“The game was almost over when I noticed you left. I thought you might like some company.”
“Company is the last thing I want. Can’t I have a little peace and quiet ”
James studied me for a minute. “It’s hard having such a big family, isn’t it ”
一、基础题—选择题B
“Eliza is always prying into (窥探) my personal life. Yesterday I found her looking through my diary. Almost everyone was in the living room watching the game just now. All I wanted to do was to watch a movie, but when I went to my room, Sara was there listening to the radio. I just wanted to be alone for a change.”
James sighed and said, “I left the same way when I was at your age. But now…”
“Now you have your own room. After Daniel went off to college, you didn’t have to share it anymore.”
一、基础题—选择题B
James smiled, “It is great to have my own room, but sometimes I really miss Daniel. We used to talk about everything—sports, school, friends… Although sometimes it seemed crowded, it was comforting to have someone else there.”
“Yeah, ‘crowded’ is right,” I said.
“I know,” James said. “But there are some good things that come out of it—we share memories and jokes no one else understands and we can support one another in face of difficulties.”
I sighed.
“Didn’t Sara stay up half the night with you last week helping you with your homework ” James asked.
一、基础题—选择题B
I admitted unwillingly, “Yeah, sometimes she can be all right.”
“This place can be your ‘room’. Anytime you need peace and quiet, just come here,” James said, pointing at a rock.
I was surprised to see James’ name there!
James smiled, “This is a great place for getting away.”
Leaning on my brother’s shoulder, I thought, “Maybe family is not bad.”

A new study came out to clear up myths (错误观念) about healthy sleeping habits for teenagers. The study was made by researchers in a hospital in America.
Published in the magazine Sleep Health, the study was made after researchers first surveyed about 200 parents and caregivers on sleep myths. The researchers found that more than 66% of parents and caregivers believed at least some of the myths were true. “Parents and caregivers commonly turn to the Internet for guidance on topics such as sleep,” said Rebecca Robbins, a study writer. “Although the Internet can give some information, there is a chance that wrong information can be accepted as facts.”
一、基础题—简答题
For example, 74% of parents and caregivers believed it’s OK to allow teenagers to stay up late and get up late on weekends. However, the study shows that having a widely different sleep schedule on weekends compared to weekdays can have a bad influence on a teenager’s schoolwork. It is healthy to sleep regularly every day.
About 66% of parents and caregivers surveyed believed that supplements with melatonin (褪黑素) are safe for teenagers to take. Melatonin is a hormone (激素) the brain produces to help control a person’s sleep-wake cycle. Taking a melatonin supplement can be useful, but teenagers shouldn’t take it without
一、基础题—简答题
experts’ suggestions. One reason is that the amount of melatonin contained in supplements can vary widely.
The third myth the study addressed was the idea that getting too much sleep is a problem. In fact, most teenagers aren’t getting enough sleep. It’s suggested that teenagers sleep 8 to 10 hours per night. The study’s writer said they hope to show more facts about sleep to encourage better sleeping habits among young people.

Rain or shine, Peter O’Neill always competes in the triathlon (铁人三项运动) of his town. The 72-year-old man has competed in every triathlon in the event’s 40-year history. He was part of the group that came up with the idea in the 1980s.
“I used to jog around the town,” Mr. O’Neill said. “I came into contact with an Olympian, David Power, who had a hotel here. A few of us got together and we discussed it and got it going in October, 1983.”
Then the 31-year-old man suggested that one of the group should compete. “Everyone else could either ride a bike or run, but I was the only one who could swim,” he laughed. “But I was happy to give it a go.”

Rebecca Van Poos, head of operations for the triathlon there, said that the event Mr. O’Neill helped to start was now an international event. “It is the world’s largest Olympic-distance triathlon,” she said. “That’s something we’re very proud of.”
“Mr. O’Neill’s efforts were inspiring. There are a couple of other athletes who have done 38 and 39,” she said. “But Peter, he is the legend—it’s pretty amazing to have someone who has done all 40 of our races.”

Mr. O’Neill trains all year round for the event, and enjoys the social side just as much as the physical benefits. “I’ve made so many friends who I ride with and I swim with. The European Space Agency (ESA) is working to create a shared time system for the moon. Up until now, there hasn’t been a need for the moon to have its own time. Each country that sent a mission to the moon simply used its own time system.
These missions will need to communicate with each other. For different systems to work together smoothly, they will all need to agree on what time it is.
On the earth, time in most countries is based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, 协调世界时). Space agencies could send a UTC time signal to the moon.
二、提高题—选择题C
However, if the UTC time signal failed, systems that depended on it could also fail. The space agencies also see setting up moon time as a way to test ideas for other planets. Sending a UTC time signal to another planet would be far more difficult. What’s more, one full day on the moon lasts about 29.5 earth days. Gravity can influence how quickly time passes. Because the gravity of the moon is about 1/6 that of the earth, clocks there would run faster every day. That adds up to about 56 microseconds every day.
The main reason ESA wants to decide on a moon time isn’t just for people—but for satellites.
二、提高题—选择题C
The space agencies will be sending lots of satellites to the moon over the next few years. The goal is to use the satellites to create a lunar GPS, so that astronauts can know where they are. But for a GPS to work, the satellites must have very precise (精确的) time.
For now, scientists aren’t sure what moon time will look like. But they are pointing out a problem that needs to be solved for future moon missions to work together smoothly.

A very long time ago, ten blazing (炽热的) suns shone bright in the sky. Our planet was too hot and too dry for humans to live on.
Luckily, a brave warrior (勇士) named Yi who was skilled in archery (射箭术) came out. He was summoned (召唤) by the emperor and was given a magical bow. With this bow he was able to shoot down nine of the ten suns in the sky, saving the earth and all the people.
As a reward, the Queen Mother of the West gave the warrior a special medicine. After drinking it, he would be sent to the heavens. However, this warrior’s heart belonged to one of the fairest women on the land, Chang’e. Therefore, he chose to stay on the earth with his lover but he still accepted the medicine to show his thanks.

In a fight, the warrior’s enemy tried to steal the medicine and take it himself. As the warrior was not at home, Chang’e was left to protect the medicine. The warrior beat his enemy quickly, but he was too late to get hold of his lover as she slowly flew to the moon.
Chang’e has been on the moon ever since and would be there until the end of time. It is with this sadness that Chinese people look at the moon on the Mid-autumn Day to miss all their loved ones who they seldom visit throughout the year.

Chopsticks are used by billions of people around the world, and they have a long history. The Chinese have been using them for at least 3,000 years. About 1,500 years ago, chopsticks were taken to some other Asian countries.
Early chopsticks were mainly used for cooking and were able to reach deep into boiling pots of water or oil. Later, people used chopsticks as tableware (餐具). This happened when a rapid population growth across China made cooks develop cost saving habits. They began cutting food into smaller pieces that required less cooking fuel. Chopsticks are perfect for holding these smaller pieces of food.
二、提高题—简答题
As food was ready to be eaten in one bite, knives became more or less obsolete (过时的). Their decline—and chopsticks’ rise—also owed to Confucius. He believed that knives at the dinner table reminded eaters of the slaughterhouse (屠宰场). He also thought that knives’ sharp points evoked (引起) images of violence and wars, killing the happiness during meals. Thanks to his teachings, the use of chopsticks quickly became widespread throughout Asia.

A 31-kilometer-wide meteorite crater (陨石坑) was first discovered in 2015 under thick ice at Greenland’s Hiawatha Glacier. The ice covering the crater, called an ice sheet, is about 1 kilometer deep. The crater remained hidden until it was discovered by the scientists.
At first, the researchers thought that the large hole might have formed about 2.6 million years ago, or even as recently as 13,000 years ago. But they announced on March 9th, 2022 that new dating methods suggested the crater is about 58 million years old. The researchers said they based their findings on dating methods that measured the breakdown of radioactive (放射性的) material. Their results were recently released in the publication Science Advances.

The new information suggests the strike happened about 8 million years after an asteroid (小行星) hit an area in Mexico. That climate change event caused by the hit led to the disappearance of more than 70 percent of the earth’s plant and animal life. All dinosaurs that were not birdlike disappeared.
At the time the meteorite hit Greenland, it was not the icy place it is today. It is believed to have been covered with rainforests populated with plant and animal life that followed the disappearance of most of the dinosaurs.
The researchers said that the meteorite released millions of times more energy than an atomic bomb (原子弹), leaving a crater big enough to swallow the city of Washington D.C.

Gavin Kenny works for Swedish Museum of Natural History and is the lead writer of the study. He said that forceful air from the event would have knocked down most trees within tens to hundreds of kilometers. In addition, an explosion from the strike would have set trees on fire and caused forest fires.
According to scientists, these kinds of strikes only happen every few million years. Gavin Kenny said, “We don’t need to be very worried about such a thing happening anytime soon.”
