The great elephant stands in the hot African sun. Slowly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth.
The beast’s great gray skin is partly broken and aged from the African sun. Some mud drops on one side from its last trip to a nearby river. Its rough hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks curve elegantly from either side of its mouth.
Somewhere a lion roars and something else gives a loud high shout. A vulture (秃鹫) drifts over far above this world, barely a black dot in the sky. The buzzing of the countless bush insects seems to collectively shift up in high tune, almost like the whole of the savanna (热带草原) was singing some song that only they knew.
I peer through the lens at this scene. The zoom lens shows almost every detail of the elephant: the three small cuts in its left ear from playing as a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from decades of living in this unforgiving grassland on a dusty continent.
And then the elephant looks at me. It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards from a vast, hidden depth there. I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered to each other across the ages on this old, sacred grassland.
It looks at me, and it looks through me and sees me. The elephant knows I am there. It always did. It is not running away, nor is it fighting. It accepts and forgives. It loves. But, mostly, it just feels sad. It feels sorry for me. I cannot do this anymore.
I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.”
24.Which word can best describe the elephant in the first two paragraphs
A. Mysterious. B. Depressed. C. Aggressive. D. Graceful.
25.What does the shift in focus from the elephant to others imply in Paragraph 3
A. The elephant is about to be attacked.
B. The author is losing interest in the elephant.
C. The elephant is part of a larger and living world.
D. The author wants to show the savanna’s dangers.
26.How does the author feel when seeing through the lens
A. He is deeply moved and filled with sympathy.
B. He is overwhelmed by the elephant’s strength.
C. He is annoyed at the presence of other animals.
D. He is shocked and scared by the elephant’s scars.
27.What can we learn from the passage
A. Nature calms our anger. B. Nature purifies our souls.
C. Nature heals our wounds. D. Nature enriches our imagination.
C
Do the colors that surround you influence how you feel Can the colors on your walls and on your clothes affect your moods Some researchers believe the answer is a decisive yes, while others aren’t so sure.
Yet many marketers, interior designers, medical professionals and others swear byan informal field of science known as color psychology. Color psychology is defined as “the study of how the colors we perceive impact our thoughts and feelings.”
Marketers use the science of color to persuade us to buy things. When choosing paint, furniture and wall art, interior designers act on the theory that colors can arouse certain feelings in us. Dentists are often advised to use light blue paint on their office walls to help calm apprehensive patients.
We should keep in mind, though, that only by considering cultural preferences are we able to fully understand the science of color. For instance, in the West, white is for brides and black is for funerals. But in ancient Asia, white was sometimes worn for funerals. In Japan yellow represents courage while in the United States, it represents happiness. Additionally, many variables including gender, age, background and more must be considered before making color assumptions when one is studying the effects of color.
After taking color variables into account, it’s safe to consider some mainstream theories about specific colors and their meanings. Here are just a few:
Red symbolizes love energy, passion and danger Red is also believed to increase one’s hunger, which might be the reason why McDonald’s and Coca-Cola chose red as their major branding color.
Brown, a color from nature, best represents things that are honest, trustworthy and dependable. It seems a perfect fit as the branding color for the package delivery company UPS.
Blue —— in addition to representing peace and calm —— also means integrity and competence. It’s no surprise that PayPal and American Express both use blue as their branding color.
Green —— another color from nature —— represents health, growth and freshness and is the perfect branding color for Starbucks.
Pink symbolizes love, romance, innocence and femininity (女性特质). The popular doll company that makes Barbie uses pink as its major branding color.
If color psychology advocates are correct, then our emotions and decisions are truly influenced by the colors around us. With this knowledge, we can effectively harness (驾驭) color power to create positive school, work and home environments.
28.What does the phrase “swear by” in the second paragraph probably mean
A. Deeply investigate. B. Deeply believe.
C. Somewhat doubt. D. Still wish.
29.What is the author’s purpose of taking white and black as an example in the passage
A. To remind we should take culture into account when learning the science of color.
B. To state that cultural preferences are decisive factors in color psychology.
C. To show different cultures have different preferences for different colors.
D. To prove white and black represent complete different things in different countries.
30.What is the reason for PayPal to choose its branding color
A. It arouses people's love and enthusiasm.
B. It leaves an impression of honesty and trustworthiness.
C. It reflects qualities of decency and capacity.
D. It is a color directly sourced from nature.
31.We can conclude from the last paragraph that _.
A. color psychology may not help us make correct decisions in life.
B. color psychology is an underdeveloped field in modern science.
C. color psychology has been recognized throughout the world.
D. color psychology is influencing our feelings and choices.

Most air conditioners use refrigerant gases called HFCs (氢氟碳化合物),which are hundreds of times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than CO . Researchers have long sought ways to produce cooling systems that do without these troublesome gases. Now Exergyn, a Dublin-based company, claims to have developed a new type of air conditioning which avoids using HFCs.
Exergyn’s system uses nitinol, a shape-memory alloy (合金) of nickel and titanium. All shape-memory alloys release heat when compressed (压缩), and then absorb it when the pressure is released and they return to their original shape. But Exergyn’s version of nitinol displays this quality to a remarkable degree. For its experimental model, the company produced 4 cm plates of the alloy, each with holes to permit the passage of a heat-carrying liquid or gas. A range of eco-friendly substances such as water, salty water and air can-be employed in that role, thus avoiding the use of HFCs.
Kevin O’ Toole, Exergyn’s managing director, explains, “To build a refrigerator involves fitting these plates together into stacks of 50 or more. Four stacks make a unit. The stacks are compressed in turn. At any given moment, one stack is being compressed, one released, one pre-heated and one pre- cooled. To cool a room involves passing one hot circuit and one cold circuit of the heat-carrying fluid or gas through this four-stack unit.”
This method of cooling is not only more environmentally friendly than an HFC set-up, but will also be less expensive to buy and 30%–40% cheaper to run. It will be lighter and smaller, too. As for reliability, the prototype’s performance suggests the unit could operate for more than 40 years without a problem.
Development is still continuing, but products may be only a few years away. Exergyn has also begun talks with carmakers and aerospace companies about setting up joint-development projects. With cars and some small aircraft going electric, it is not just cooling the cabin that manufacturers have to think about, but also cooling the batteries.
32.What are the holes in the plates of alloy intended for
A. Avoiding the use of those troublesome gases such as HFCs.
B. Testing a range of substances such as water, salty water and air.
C. Passing the heat-carrying fluid or gas through the four-stack unit.
D. Helping compress, release, pre-heat and pre-cool the four stacks.
33.What does the fourth paragraph mainly talk about concerning the new type of cooling
A. Its potential. B. Its strengths.
C. Its functions. D. Its affordability.
34.What can we infer about Exergyn from the last paragraph
A. It is likely to expand its business.
B. It will set up an aerospace company.
C. It has brought the technology to market.
D. It will lead the market of air conditioning.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Model: a four-stack unit B. HFCs: a potential crisis
C. Exergyn: a future winner D. Nitinol: a cooler alternative

People say fortune favors the brave, but taking a leap is easier said than done. 36
●Embrace strategic risk.
One of the biggest misconceptions about risk-taking is that if something feels uncomfortable, it’s a sign to back away. But researches have taught us this: 37 Ask yourself, “Does this risk match my values Is it moving me toward something I care about ” If yes, expect some embarrassment. The biggest payoffs live just past that initial awkward phase.
● 38
Many of us have grown too afraid of taking risks — maybe because one risk made us embarrassed. A good way to feel less scared of risks is to ask yourself: “What’s one small thing I can do to get used to not knowing what will happen ” Start with bite-size, winnable risks, like speaking up in a meeting, volunteering for a project slightly outside your wheelhouse.
●Breathe in bravery.
Breathe out fear. 39 In other words, taking a few deep breaths helps regulate anxiety. Another easy way to stretch your risk- taking muscles is by copying someone you admire. Imagine them in your shoes and how they'd approach your challenge. How would they talk, walk or hold themselves Even standing tall sends a signal to your brain that “you’ve got this”.
●Forgive yourself.
We all have moments when we don't do the thing that will help us grow. And that’s okay! Instead of beating yourself up, forgive yourself because you’re human. 40 Being kind to yourself may just be the best way to step forward toward a braver version of yourself.
A.Enjoy small wins.
B.Our body impacts our mind.
C.Overcome unexpected fears.
D.No one is courageous all the time.
E.Humans always have high expectations.
F.Bravery and awkwardness are sisters in life.
G.The following tips will help you outsmart fear.
36.A. A B. B C. C D. D E. E F. F G. G

It was the last day before moving into the new house. Mr. and Mrs. Martin wanted to make it warm and lovely, so they decided to do some decorating themselves. That morning, Mrs. Martin stood at the door, reminding her busy husband. “Don’t climb too high, don’t move heavy boxes, and don’t forget to rest,” she said again and again, before she eventually headed out to buy curtains.
Earlier, their daughter Emily had called. She said she was tied up with her job in another city, but promised, “Don’t worry, we’ll celebrate together soon.” The couple missed her, of course, but they smiled at each other and agreed it would be meaningful to get the new home ready, a warm welcome awaiting their daughter’s arrival.
Mr. Martin waved goodbye to his wife and went back to his decorating work, confident and full of energy at first. But soon the living room turned into a battlefield. Boxes, nails, a hammer and screwdrivers lay everywhere. Paint splashed onto the floor, and the wall looked like a child’s drawing. And several photo frames were scattered on the ground.
“A spider!” Mr. Martin climbed onto a shaky stool to chase it away-his wife hated those things — but instead he slipped and broke a photo frame. “Ouch, my back!” he groaned, sweat trickling down his forehead. He began to wonder whether he was really able to do this job alone.
Then came a sharp smell from the kitchen. “Oh no, my cake!” Mr. Martin dragged himself to open the oven. The cake, which he had planned to surprise his wife, was now nothing but a hard black rock. He stared at it, shaking his head. “Should I admit the mess Or pretend nothing happened ” he whispered. Suddenly, the door creaked open. Mrs. Martin stepped inside with the new curtains in her arms.

57.【答案】Paragraph 1: For a moment, Mrs. Martin stood frozen. Her eyes widened at the messy living room — paint splatters on the floor, scattered tools, and the broken photo frame. When she spotted the blackened cake in the oven, she let out a soft sigh. Mr. Martin lowered his head in shame, ready for criticism. Unexpectedly, Mrs. Martin walked over and gently touched his back. “Are you hurt ” she asked worriedly. Then she smiled, “We’re decorating a home, not building a palace. Mess is part of the fun.” Together, they started cleaning up, with Mr. Martin sharing his clumsy attempts to chase the spider.
Paragraph 2: With the new curtains finally in place, the doorbell rang. It was Emily, holding a big bunch of flowers. She stepped inside and gasped, “Wow, it feels like home already!” Her eyes fell on the slightly messy but warm room, and then on the black cake. Mr. Martin scratched his head awkwardly, but Emily laughed and said, “I love it — it’s full of your love.” That evening, they ordered takeout, talked and laughed while arranging photo frames. The messy living room, once a battlefield, had turned into the warmest corner of their new home.

Dear Jenny,
I’d like to recommend “Mobile phones in class ” as our debate topic. It’s a practical and engaging issue that affects all of us directly.
This topic sparks strong opinions. Some argue phones aid learning through online search and apps, while others believe they distract students. A debate would help us weigh these views fairly. Plus, it encourages critical thinking about technology’s role in education.
I hope this suggestion is helpful. It’s a topic everyone can relate to, ensuring lively discussions. Looking forward to your feedback!
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible version 2:
Dear Jenny,
I’d like to suggest “Group or individual study ” as our debate topic. This is a meaningful choice that every student encounters in their learning process.
Group study encourages collaboration and diverse perspectives, while individual study allows for personalized focus. Some students thrive in team discussions, whereas others prefer quiet and independence. Exploring both approaches would help us understand their respective strengths in different learning situations.
I believe this topic will lead to a practical and insightful discussion. It could even help classmates improve their study habits. Hope you find this suggestion useful!
Yours,
Li Hua
