can 表示 “能够” “可以” “能否”
could表示 “能够” “可以”或委婉地提出请求或看法
may 表示 “可能” “或许” 或 “可否” “可以”
might表示 “可能” “或许” 或委婉地表示 “可否” “可以”
含义

3. 情态动词的否定形式:情态动词+not
4. 情态动词的疑问句:情态动词+主语+谓语动词(+其他)
5. could, should, might, would本身为情态动词,表达更加委婉的语气,又可以作can, shall, may, will的过去式。除此之外,其他情态动词本身没有时态的变化。

1. 表示一般的能力。
Jim can speak English very well.
2. 表示推测,意为 “可能”,常用于否定句或疑问句当中。
That can’t be Mary --- she’s in hospital now.
3. 表示 “允许或请求”,与may的意思差不多。
You can phone me after six.
4. 表示 “有时会”,不经常发生、偶尔发生的情况。
He can be very tactless sometimes.

1. 表示过去的能力。
When I left school at 16, I couldn’t read or write.
2. 表示“可能”,比can的可能性要弱。
That could be really exciting.
3. 表示 “允许或请求”,语气较委婉。

1. 表示许可或征求对方的建议。

1. 表示许可,尤指过去的许可。
He asked if he might go home.
2. 表示“可能性”,指现在的可能性时比might的可能性要小。
He might say that now, but he can soon change his mind.

情态动词must的用法
1. 表示 “必须,一定要”,多指现在或将来的情况。否定形式是 “mustn’t”, 意为 “一定不要,不允许,禁止”
You must finish your homework before 10 o’clock.
2. 表示推测,意为 “一定是”,常指有根据的推测,用于肯定句中。
I think the old woman must be a nice person.
3. 表示 “偏偏,偏要”,指令说话人不满的事。
After I gave her my advice, she must go the oppoite.
4. must问句的答语。
肯定回答:Yes, you must.
否定回答:No, you needn’t.

The Modal Verbs(情态动词):
含义:本身有一定的词义,主要用来表明说话者对某一行为的态度和观点,主要包括能力、可能、要求、许诺、威胁等。但是不能独立作谓语,只能和动词原形一起构成谓语。
