Guide to Being a Buddy
Thanks for being a buddy (同伴). Here is some information about the International Buddy
Programme (IBP) and it will help explain what it means to be a buddy for a new international
student.
Your role as a buddy is to:
Make first contact via email with your buddy once you are matched with a student.
Welcome and look after your buddy when they arrive at school.
Continue to answer any questions, provide school and local services information such
as transportation and facilities.
Maintain contact, even if your buddy is feeling “at home”.
Culture Shock
The first year at a new school can be full of mixed emotions. Students may feel excited
about new experiences or nervous about leaving family and making friends. Buddies should
recognise these feelings and offer support to help students adjust to their new environment.
Help your buddy by:
Empathizing (有同感 ) their difficulties — don’t take bad comments personally and
try not to argue how wonderful New Zealand is.
Explaining the rules and norms (规范 ) of New Zealand — if they understand the
“why” behind difficult situations, they may be able to better understand situations and
actions.
Keeping in contact if they are becoming upset.
If you want ideas and advice or have any questions, please click here to contact the
International Student Support team.

Recently, I’ve found myself quite crazy about collecting. It’s a hobby that could absorb my
spare time and money without regret. Yet, as my collection expands at an alarming rate, I can’t
help worrying about sinking into debt and reflecting on it.
Collectors each have their own beginnings. Take Judy, for instance. As a child, she had to
visit her grandmother weekly. Feeling bored, she played with her grandmother’s jewelry. Now,
she’s passionate about collecting antique earrings and necklaces. Sam, another collector, found
comfort and joy in colorful clowns (小丑) during his challenging childhood, and now he’s crazy
about all things clown-related, from posters and books to lunchboxes and beyond.
“Collecting provides a goal, a safe space and a focus for the mind,” a collector shares.
“Once you get off the beaten track to enter an unexplored world, where the most interesting
stuff is, other people just don’t understand. So it becomes your private world.” For collectors,
it’s a personal hunt that keeps them searching late into the night, ignoring the social media
distractions. They know exactly what they seek and go to the trouble to acquire it.
However, some people regard such collecting behavior far from reasonable. They argue
that collecting so many items is a total waste of time and money. Moreover, these items will just
gather dust, displayed like aged beauty queens waiting to be admired once more, not to mention
the space they’ll take up.
Actually, collections are more than just objects. Collections can be a way to connect with
history and fame. To own a piece of history that has been touched by someone famous can be a
form of time travel, allowing collectors to dive into the past through their collections.
Collections can also be a mirror reflecting the personality and identity of the collector. It’s a
hobby that can be as simple or as complex as one wishes, but it always offers the excitement of
the hunt and the satisfaction of adding another piece to one’s collection.
29. What might be a common reason for beginning a collection
A. Beauty goals. B. Growth challenges.
C. Family traditions. D. Childhood experiences.
30. What do the underlined words “the beaten track” mean in paragraph 3
A. The conventional way. B. The unsafe path.
高二英语试题 第 4页共 10 页

31. Why are the aged beauty queens mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To highlight the appeal of collecting.
B. To display the quantity of collections.
C. To question the behaviour of collecting.
D. To doubt the choice of collections.
32. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The history of collecting. B. The value of collections.
C. The instructions for collecting. D. The personalities of collectors.

Maths anxiety is older than you might think. A hundred years ago, German physicist Felix
Auerbach, concerned about the situation and hoping to find ways to deal with it, wrote a little
book called The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It. For a mathematician like myself,
the pleasure of reading his book is followed by a sigh of regret that the topic is as important
today as it was a century ago.
Why do we fear mathematics At heart, says Auerbach, it comes down to a basic
misunderstanding of what maths is. The fear of messing up a calculation (计算) may be real, but
the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians who are terrible at calculation proves that
maths skills and mathematics aren’t the same thing.
What, then, is mathematics Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an
art. For me, part of the problem is that we are often stuck in the “science” box. If we can be
shown the beauty of mathematics, we might stop fearing the calculations supporting it. As a
language, what sets maths apart is the universality (普遍性) of its truths — you can become
fluent wherever you are from. As an art, the beauty of maths lies in the wonderful thinking that
allows us to understand the endless, explore the beautiful patterns of art and nature, and delight
in the perfection of ideas. Focusing entirely on calculation skills misses the joy and excitement
that can come from discovering patterns and understanding them, from seeing the artistic beauty
of mathematics.
Some experts like to point out that we experience anxiety the same way we experience
excitement. In the same way, fear can be negative or positive. Our goal should be to move
people from a narrow view of mathematics as mere calculations to an appreciation of it as a
beautiful language and art that inspires amazement.
33. What does the author think of the book by Auerbach according to paragraph 1
A. It overstates the fear of maths.
B. It addresses a common problem.
C. It is too old to be important today.
D. It is popular among mathematicians.
高二英语试题 第 5页共 10 页
34. What is the reason behind people’s fear of mathematics
A. Inability to do calculations.
B. Lack of support from teachers.
C. Failure to understand its nature.
D. Difficulty of the math language.
35. In what way can we regard mathematics as an art
A. Through focusing on technical skills.
B. Through creating artworks with delight.
C. Through exploring applications in science.
D. Through appreciating its beauty in patterns.
36. What does the passage suggest we do regarding learning maths
A. Express our fear. B. Seek experts’ help.
C. Change our opinion. D. Learn a new language.

“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound ” The
philosopher George Berkeley once wondered.
Compared to real trees, the virtual (虚拟的) ones catch more of our attention — you must
be familiar with the 3D cartoon images that city planners use to illustrate green spaces.
Adorable as they are, a new technology is reshaping the landscape. Meet “Tree-D Fusion (融
合)”, an innovative 3D tree modeling method which has so far produced 600,000 virtual trees in
local communities, and aims globally.
To create the “Tree-D” model, the researchers have used a mixed method. Besides using
the traditional model to outline the shapes of branches and leaves, developers have also adopted
AI deep learning. By feeding inputs like tree types, temperatures, and light conditions, the
Al-driven model can not only monitor the trees’ growing process but show how the trees will
grow in generated pictures based on the data. While the previous modeling method excels at
recognizing static (静态的 ) features, the Tree-D Fusion can effectively present the trees’
changing nature, making it possible to forecast the trees’ growth.
“Even the slightest movement of branches in a gentle wind can be recorded,” says PhD
student Jae Joong Lee, who created the technology. “Understanding these interactions with the
environment can be significant for city planning.” For example, planners can tell when and
where growing branches might get caught in power lines, or find the right locations where
placing trees could improve cooling and air quality. If planners rely on traditional procedures,
they have no choice but to make adjustments after the trees have grown and the problems show
up.
“This is just the beginning,” says Lee. “We aim to design more sustainable urban
communities globally, creating a closer connection between people and their living
environments.”
高二英语试题 第 6页共 10 页
37. Why does the author mention the question in paragraph 1
A. To introduce a new technology.
B. To stress the importance of trees.
C. To call attention to forest protection.
D. To encourage philosophical thinking.
38. What is an advantage of the Tree-D model over the traditional one
A. It can recognise trees’ static features.
B. It can identify different types of trees.
C. It can produce numerous identical trees.
D. It can predict the dynamic growth of trees.
39. What can the “Tree-D Fusion” technology help with
A. Planning ahead in city tree positioning.
B. Making up for environmental damage.
C. Developing new power supply facilities.
D. Equipping planners with planting skills.
40. What is the best title for this text
A. AI Reducing the Need for Real Trees
B. AI Tree Modeling Aiding City Design
C. Tree-D Fusion Making Trees Grow Faster
D. 3D Trees Enhancing Community Connections

Baby animals are cute, and when we see one that seems to be in trouble, it’s natural that we
want to help. 41 It’s important to recognise when an animal truly needs help and to
understand how to assist safely. Then how should we properly interact with young animals in
the wild
Do not approach a baby animal immediately you spot it, otherwise it may run away,
making it hard for the parent to find it. 42 Baby animals are often left alone in tall grass
or bushes while their parents forage (觅食). The parents are likely nearby and will return. So,
wait and observe first.
Generally, people should give wildlife space. Many parks require visitors to stay at least 25
yards away from animals, and much further if it’s a predator (捕食者 ) like a lion or a
bear. 43
When an animal is visibly injured, the best approach is to call the local forestry department
or a wildlife organisation to get advice about next steps. 44 You may not be able to do
it properly. If the animal isn’t obviously injured, you should wait and see if a parent returns.
高二英语试题 第 7页共 10 页
45 If you see a turtle crossing the road and it’s safe to stop your car, it’s fine to
help the animal get to its destination. Also, if you accidentally knock a bird’s nest out of a tree
or observe a baby bird fall, you typically can gently return the bird to its nest.
A. Try not to handle the animal by yourself.
B. However, animals are often much stronger than we think.
C. Animal parents may abandon a baby due to food shortages.
D. Instead, your first reaction should be to watch from a distance.
E. If you’re close enough to take a photo with it, you’re too close.
F. Yet there are situations where humans can lend a helping hand.
G. But well-meaning humans can sometimes do more harm than good.

第四部分 写作(满分25分)

I had always been in love with acting, while my older sister Diana, who was an “A”
student, dreamed of becoming an astronomer (天文学家).
Our bedroom window is a perfect place for star-observing. Diana taught me everything
about stars, and sometimes we’d search the light of “hidden” stars. She told me these stars were
so far away that their light hadn’t reached Earth yet. However, the idea of “hidden” stars
高二英语试题 第 9页共 10 页
seemed strange to me. How could we be sure they even existed And why should we care about
them now, when so many bright stars were already shining in the sky
Though Diana’s heart was set on space, our parents wanted her to major in medicine. I
faced difficulties in going after my dream too. My attempts at acting hadn’t gone well either. Mr.
Ellison, the director of the school play, had not chosen me as one of the actors. Instead, he
suggested that I join the stage crew (工作人员), in a supporting role for the show.
To save face, I lied to my family, telling them I had a role in the play. Maybe I would find
a way to perform on stage. Who knows Then, once, one of the actresses missed a rehearsal (排
练 ) , I jumped at the chance to read her lines. So it might happen again on the performance
night — there was a possibility that someone might not show up for the performance, and I
could be the one to save the play.
My wish came true. One of the actresses, Christy didn’t make it to the performance. I
approached Mr. Ellison and offered to take her place. Though still doubtful, he finally agreed.
“You can try. But since you never rehearsed, it can be hard,” he said.
The curtain rose, and I stepped onto the stage, my heart beating fast. The bright lights
made it difficult to see the audience, but I could feel them — waiting, watching, expecting. My
nervousness grew, but I pushed it aside. This was my moment. I had dreamed of this for so long,
and now finally, I, like a “hidden star”, would have my chance to shine.

But what happened next on the stage was a disaster. My enthusiasm and confidence for the
show were not enough to make up for my lack of rehearsal. My best intentions didn’t save me from
saying the wrong lines more than once, resulting in constant glares from the dance partners. Anxiety
and nervousness increased as my confidence waned. To make matters worse, I accidentally stepped
on another actor’s costume during the curtain call, causing both of us to fall to the ground. It couldn’t
have been worse or more humiliating. Although Mr. Ellison and my parents whispered some
comforting words to me as I was about to flee the stage, I could barely remember anything except
the embarrassment I felt.
After the embarrassing show, I went home and locked myself in the bedroom. Seized by
overwhelming frustration, I turned a deaf ear to Diana’s request to come in. But she was persistent.
Reluctantly, I finally opened the door. Throwing her arms around me, she gave me a tight hug. “ For
a first-time actor, you did a good job,” she said. “ You are more of a fighter than I am.” Her words
were like a balm to my bruised pride. “Just think about how you let us believe you were a real actor
all these days. You’ll definitely make a fantastic actor!” I looked up. She always knew how to
motivate me, like a guiding star. Maybe now we are like “hidden stars” which are not bright enough,
but both of us will shine and be recognized one day.
