local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title of the world's longest-serving lifeguard. Lewis, 74, began
working as a lifeguard when he was 16. "It's the best job in the world, " he said. "You're
working and helping people. What could be better "
His colleagues were just half his age. But he is still fighting fit. Royal National Lifeboat
Institution (RNLI) lifeguards must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes, and run
200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The tests are still reasonably comfortable for
Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3, 000 metres of sea swimming each month.
Lewis's adventure began in 1965 when a police officer spotted that he was a keen
swimmer and suggested he get his lifesaving badges(徽章). The following year he began
volunteering as a lifeguard at the age of 16. Then he became part of the RNLI lifeguards in
2001 and began providing beach patrols(巡查)for local authorities.
Now the RNLI patrols more than 240 beaches across the UK. Lewis laughed when asked if
he had seen many changes. "The RNLI's equipment in 2024 includes jetskis(水上摩托艇)and
rescue boats. When I started, we had a T-shirt, swimming trunks, a swimming hat, a coat if you
were lucky and a rescue tube. It was really very different."
His most memorable rescue took place in 2010 when three children got into trouble while
swimming. There was a combination of wind and a lively spring tide. One of them was being
hurled(猛扔) into a rock with severe cuts. The other two were being "knocked around" by
the waves. Lewis swam out just with a rescue tube but managed to get all three back.
Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents
people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out rescues. "I would love to go through
the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody."

22 . Imagine you're at a football game when this rude man sits next to you. He's loud, he
spills his drink on you, and he makes fun of your team. Days later, you're walking in the park
when suddenly it starts to rain heavily. The same guy from the football game offers you an
umbrella. Do you change your mind about him based on this second meeting, or do you go
with your first impression and write him off
Related research suggests that we're quick to form lasting impressions of others based on
their behaviors. On the one hand, learning very bad, highly immoral (不道德) information
about someone usually has a stronger influence than learning very good, highly moral
information. This is because immoral behaviors can better show a person's true character.
On the other hand, when forming and updating our opinions about others, people tend to
give more importance to behaviors that are seen as less common. When thinking about others'
actions, certain areas in the brain will become active. This brain activity is connected to how
often people think these behaviors happen in daily life. In other words, the brain tries to decide
if the person's behavior is common or unusual.
There's a good meaning in this data: your brain, and you, might care more about the very
bad, immoral things another person has done compared to the very good, moral things, but
it's a direct result of the comparative rareness of those bad behaviors.
In the situation with the rude-football-fan-turned-good-person, your brain says, "Well, in
my experience, pretty much anyone would lend someone their umbrella, but the way this guy
acted at the football game, that was unusual." And so, you decide to go with your first
impression.
Think about the last time you judged someone based on their behavior, especially a time
when you really feel like you changed your mind about someone. Was the behavior that
caused you to update your impression something you'd expect anyone to do, or was it
something totally out of the ordinary
(1) What does the underlined phrase "write him off" mean in Paragraph 1
A. Forgive him. B. Ignore him. C. Accept him. D. Trust him.
(2) Why do bad behaviors have a stronger influence
A. They are more-unforgivable.
B. They are seen as less common.
C. They could form fasting impressions.
D. They better present a person's true nature.
(3) Which of the following is your final impression to "the man"
A. Noisy. B. Impolite. C. Kind D. Careful
(4) Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. The Rareness of Bad Behaviors
B. The Importance of First Impressions
C. How to Leave a Good impression on Others
D. What Will Influence Your Impression of Others
23 . To understand the medieval climate of Europe, climate scientists are now turning to a
rich historical resource: wine. Records of grape harvests of Europe stretching back to the 1400s
can provide a powerful resource to figure out past temperatures.
Brǒnnimann, a climate scientist at the university of Bern, has shown in Climate of the Past
that the reported sweetness of grape juice before fermentation ( 发 酵 ) can record local
temperatures. After grapes were harvested and pressed, the resulting juice, or "wine must, "
would be sampled and rated by local experts. The more sugar, the more alcohol would end up
in the wine. And it's long been known that high temperatures boost a grape's sugar content.
Hot years led to popular wines on the market, such as 1811's Comet Wine.
The Bern group hunted through archives(档案) to dig up sugar rating records from 10
locations across France, Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg, screening them against
records for historical events, such as war, or disease, that might have prevented a perfect
harvest time. For the remaining records, the sugar ratings varied by location, showing its value
as a local temperature proxy.
Some mysteries appeared in the data. The 1470s, for example, had the highest rated wine
must, suggesting Europe went through a warm period even as it entered a cool period known
as the Little Ice Age. "But we don't really know what happened then, " Brǒnnimann says. To try
to find out, the team has begun feeding wine records into a new climate model, released this
year, which attempts to copy global conditions on a month-by-month basis from the 1400s
onward.
The sugar ratings continue to this day, though now with modern tools, and Brǒnnimann's
team found they similarly do a good job charting modern-day global warming. Starting
around the late 1980s, ratings of sugar content began to rise sharply. It seems global warming
has been good for European wine harvests.
(1) Why did the climate scientists turn their focus to wine
A. To get an insight in past climate. B. To better understand grape harvests.
C. To get familiar with European history. D. To acquire sufficient research resources.
(2) What does the author mainly intend to do in Paragraph 2
A. To provide different examples. B. To challenge experts' opinions.
C. To expose the hidden logic. D. To summarize previous paragraph.
(3) What does the underlined word "proxy" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Warning B. Control C. Factor. D. Indicator.

A. It contributes to global warming. B. It has research significance.
C. It replaces modern equipment. D. It addresses a historieal mystery.
24 . 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
We all do it: Texting while walking, or chatting on the phone while cooking dinner. In
today's society, doing just more than one thing at a time seems very common. But research
shows that multitasking can even be harmful. 1
It's slowing you down. 2 In fact, it will probably take you a longer time to finish two
projects when you're jumping back and forth than to finish each one separately. In a word,
switching between tasks leads to a loss in productivity.
3 The human brain can handle two complex tasks without too much trouble. Add a
third task, however, and it can cause you to make errors whatever you're working on,
especially if one or more of your activities involve much critical thinking.
It's stressing you out. Researchers found employees who received a lot of email stayed in
an alert mode with higher heart rates. It's not only the physical act of multitasking that causes
stress. 4 If you do poorly in an exam because you studied while watching matches on TV,
that can certainly bring a lot of stress.
It can be dangerous. Texting or talking on a cellphone is as dangerous as drunk
driving. 5 People who use mobile devices while walking are less likely to look around
before stepping into a crosswalk. And in one study, one in five teenagers who had a car
accident admitted they were using a smart phone at the time of the accident.
A. It leads to making mistakes.
B. It's the consequences, as well.
C. Then how to avoid multitasking
D. Multitasking does harm to your critical thinking.
E. Not just using a phone while driving puts you at risk.
F. Here are the reasons why you should stop multitasking.
G. Contrary to popular belief, multitasking doesn't save time.

It took a day's drive, but distance was beside the point. I always enjoyed long journeys in
my father's car with my family. However, things went different that time. We were moving to a
new town, not for any tourist destination, but to settle down; for my father had a new job
there. My mother, sitting on the passenger seat in the front, was talking with my father. She
looked excited for the coming new life. But I was down, feeling nervous about starting a new
school life. Entering a new school meant adapting to a completely different environment and
meeting new classmates and teachers, which I was not good at.
On my first day at the new school, I felt lost and out of place. The students already knew
each other well, and they chatted happily during breaks. I missed my old friends terribly and
wished I could go back to my old school. Feeling lonely, I often spent time alone during breaks
and after classes, reading books in the library or drawing pictures in the art room. I missed the
good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging.
As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in. I was a shy girl and found it difficult to
strike up conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my
discomfort and tried to be friendly, but I couldn't shake off the feeling of being an outsider. I
only had words with my deskmate, Alex, when necessary. Things took a turn for the worse
when I knocked off Alex's water bottle by accident, although I picked up the bottle
immediately and apologized to him. He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me. Soon I
found we were avoiding each other.

21 . On a spring day, Guinness World Records held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award
local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title of the world's longest-serving lifeguard.

A. To illustrate the importance of swimming skills.
B. To show the requirements of being a safeguard.
C. To emphasize Lewis's efforts and capacity.
D. To describe the test process of fitness swimming.
(2) What made Lewis begin his life-saving career
A. His voluntary experience. B. His passion for swimming.
C. An invitation from RNLI. D. A police officer's suggestion.
(3) What can be inferred from Lewis's words in Paragraph 4
A. RNLI cares for the safety of lifeguards. B. The former lifeguards were more skilled.
C. RNLI currently needs more lifeguards. D. Lifeguard work was not easy in the past.
(4) Which of the following best describes Lewis
A. Devoted and caring. B. Hardworking and honest.
C. Creative and determined. D. Generous and ambitious.

他说,提供建议防止人们陷入困境比进行救援更可取。"我希望整个夏天都不必去救任
何人。")" 可知,Lewis是一个奉献和有爱心的人。故选A。
【答案】 ( 1 ) B
( 2 ) D
( 3 ) B

A. Warning B. Control C. Factor. D. Indicator.
(4) What can we infer about the application of sugar ratings
A. It contributes to global warming. B. It has research significance.
C. It replaces modern equipment. D. It addresses a historieal mystery.

I missed the
good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging.

immediately and apologized to him. He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me. Soon I
found we were avoiding each other.

progressed, we found that we shared many common interests. We put a lot of effort
into the drawings and texts, and finally we completed quite an outstanding poster.
Alex seemed to forgive me. He appreciated my efforts and began to care about my
feelings. The teacher highly praised our work and our classmates were amazed at
the picture on the poster.
Alex proudly introduced that the fantastic picture was drawn by me. I smiled
shyly but happily as my classmates crowned around me and gave me a thumbs-up.
Slowly but surely, I started feeling more comfortable in my new school. I made new
friends, including Alex, and began to participate in activities in and after classes. By
the end of the school year, I had fully adapted to the new environment. Moving to a
new town was not only challenging, but it
