Have you seen an apple tree when it’s blooming The flowers start as light pink and gradually turn white. They make the air smell sweet, just like honey. Apple trees do this because they need bees. The sweet smell brings bees to them.
Bees are a bit choosy (挑剔的). They don’t like flying when it’s cold outside. Windy or rainy weather also stops them from going out. Apple farmers know their apples need bees. So, every spring, they buy bees and let them fly freely. Usually, they put one honeycomb for each acre (英亩) of the orchard (果园).
When the weather is nice, bees start their job. They go to apple flowers to collect nectar (花蜜). While collecting nectar, their wings pick up the pollen (花粉). When they fly to another flower, they carry the pollen and help the flower get pollinated. Sometimes, a bee might use pollen from one kind of apple tree on another kind. That’s why a delicious red apple seed might not grow into a delicious red apple tree.
Farmers use a way called grafting (嫁接) techniques to get the right apple trees. They take a small branch from a parent tree and connect it to a young tree. The two trees grow together. This way, there are many kinds of apples in the world. Next time you eat an apple, think about how bees and farmers help make it taste so good.

Food is a window to different cultures. When I studied in Thailand last year, I learned to cook tom yum goong (冬阴功汤). The process taught me more than just cooking skills.
First, my host mom helped me prepare some ingredients—lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and galangal. Haha! I’d never heard of them before. “Cooking is like painting,” she said. “You must balance different flavors—sour, sweet, salty, and spicy.”
Next, we added the shrimp (虾) and poured in coconut milk. The soup was boiling and filled the kitchen with a wonderful smell. When it was ready, we ate it with sticky rice. The mixture of flavors (味道) danced on my tongue.
My host family explained that tom yum goong is more than a dish. It’s a symbol of Thai hospitality. They cook it for guests to show warmth and respect. Through this experience, I realized that every culture expresses its stories and values through food.
Now I cook tom yum goong for my family in China. It helps me think of my time in Thailand and share Thai culture with others. Food truly connects people across borders (国界).
Exploring foreign food allows us to discover new worlds. Even simple dishes can tell rich cultural stories. You don’t always need to travel far—try a new restaurant in your city. The flavors might be different, but the feelings they create are common. Food builds bridges between people and nations. That’s the magic of cooking tradition.

After starting to work, I began to see society in a new way. Many jobs look easy, but they are actually very tiring.
Take service workers for example. Milk tea shop employees (雇员) often stand for ten hours a day. They have to make drinks quickly and smile at every customer. They carry heavy plates and work very fast.
Other jobs are also not easy. Deliverymen (外卖员) ride bikes quickly to send food on time. Factory workers can’t use their phones or take long breaks. Office workers’ eyes get dry from looking at computer screens all day. Teachers talk a lot and need to take care of different students and their parents.

Have you ever heard of the Venus flytrap (捕蝇草——用叶子捕捉后消化昆虫) It is one of the most amazing plants in the world. Unlike most plants that get food from the soil (泥土), the Venus flytrap catches small insects (昆虫) for food.
The Venus flytrap has special leaves. Each leaf has two parts, and there are small hairs on the inside. When an insect touches these hairs twice in a short time, the two parts of the leaf close quickly, like a trap. The insect can’t get out. Then the plant slowly digests (消化) the insect to get nutrients (营养物).
This plant grows in wet places in the southeastern United States. It needs lots of sunlight and water to live. But it can’t grow in cold places. Many people love this plant because of its special way of living. However, some people dig it up from the wild, which makes it in danger.

Sloths (树懒) mainly live in the rainforests, and they are one of the slowest-moving animals in the world. They spend most of their time in the trees.
Sloths are in great danger because people keep cutting down trees in the rainforests to make room for farms, buildings, and roads. For sloths, the loss of just one tree can be a big problem. For one thing, they are losing their homes; for another, they meet great difficulties moving between trees to find food. When there are gaps between trees, sloths can’t jump from tree to tree like monkeys. So they have to climb down to the ground to reach another tree. But that puts them in danger. Some may get injured (受伤的) by other animals. Some baby sloths are left behind. That’s why The Sloth Institute (TSI) comes to help!
TSI works to help the injured sloths get back to health. As for baby sloths, they can go to “sloth school”. And the school helps them to return to the wild. They have a lot to learn: how to find food, where to sleep, and how to climb trees safely.
TSI also helps sloths in other ways. If there are gaps between trees, workers will use ropes (绳索) to connect the trees. The “sloth speedways” allow sloths to cross safely and stay away from dangers on the ground.
